There are 10 boxes. Box 1 is worth 1 point, Box 2 is worth 2 points, and so on up to Box 10, worth 10 points.

There are 10 players. Each player has 10 chits.

To join the game, post here and then send me a PM assigning your 10 chits to the 10 boxes. If you put the most chits in a box, you win that box and its points! If there is a tie for the highest number of chits, no one gets the box. (Note: If you don't post here and send a PM, you will not be signed up - I will take the first 10 who do both and submit a valid assignment.)

Whoever gets the most total points wins. In the case of a tie for total points: whoever wins the most boxes wins. If players are still tied, they rejoice in their shared victory!

Here is an example of the results:

The Platinum Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Treat others as they want to be treated, not as you want to be treated.

Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for this game. If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play here.

Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.

General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable, check with the mod if you need clarifications.
2. Personal communication outside of the forum postings is NOT ALLOWED unless your Role PM specifically allows it.
3. If you have a role with a Night action, your choices are due to all mods by the posted deadline (generally 48 hours from Night start during the first few Nights; later Nights may have shorter deadlines). If we do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions. In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used. Generally, one team member may submit the Night Actions for all team members. See rule 7 under miscellaneous below if you anticipate being VLA while having a PR.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage), unless your Role PM specifically allows it.
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mods know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase, unless your Action is compulsory.
6. As a general rule you should aim for more than one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving. Please treat this game as a commitment. If you can't commit to this game because of outside activities/responsibilities, other forum games or other contributing factors please /out before the start of the game.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Quicktopics, except for twilight. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent, but will be invited to the Spectator Quicktopic.
8. Do not edit or delete posts. We don't want some players having more information than others. If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.

9. This game will have 7 day deadlines and 2 days nights.
10. Lynch rules vary by the number of players alive.  With 10 or more players alive, the player with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched.  Ties are broken by coin flip.  With nine or less players alive, if a majority lynch is not reached by the deadline, no lynch occurs.
11. Rule Update: Players must have avatars that are unique to themselves. If multiple players have the same avatar and neither are willing to change they will both be mod killed.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, brown text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mods privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game. In the event of an incorrect vote count the mod has the right to revert the game state back to the state before the erroneous vote count. This means that any votes cast in the meantime will become void. Any time that was lost during this even will be added back onto for deadlines. Please note that if a mistake is not caught before a flip, the erroneous vote count will become binding.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 24 hours of no activity (VLA posts in the official VLA thread negate automatic prods). A prodded player has 24 hours to respond or risks replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill, or beyond.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging. If you have a Power Role and go on VLA for longer than 2 days (the time period of a Night) please submit a temporary Night Action before leaving on VLA. This will be a placeholder action in the event that you will be absent during the night. Failure to submit an action before leaving will result in a "no action" that night.
8. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread. A request to /out must only be done via a PM to the moderator. Please do not use this as a manipulation technique. (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request). Requests to /out are final once submitted. There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed.

I don't know why I enjoy these brackets so much. There really isn't a reason to like them, except that they are mindless fun (that and I am not currently in any Forum Games, so need something to occupy my time). So here is another one, this time the ability that blew our minds the moment we realized it could be used for more than just getting rid of curses.... Trashing!

I expanded the topic slightly to accomadate a full 64 seed bracket. I am classifying cards in this bracket as any card that can trash your own cards (not the cards of others, let's save that for the Favorite Attack Bracket), remove cards from your deck permanently or semi-permanently. This includes: trashers, pseudo-trashers and one-shots. Let me know if I missed any. I tried to be thorough.

Other Games / Just Bought
« on: November 24, 2015, 04:01:47 pm »
Just bought three games: Sushi Go!, Lost Cities and Codenames at my local board gaming store (shameless plug for GameNightGames if you are in the SLC area).

These three games need to fit into three slots.

1. Christmas present for brother and sister in-law
2. Christmas present for wife
3. Game for Thanksgiving trip with extended family

I don't know which game to fit into which spot. Obviously, I want to immediately open all three of them and play immediately. The one that is going with the the in-laws I won't get to play much as they live in Portland. The other two I will own, but which one to play with this weekend, and which one to sit on?

Help me decide?

8. If a modkill takes place during the day the following will happen: if the player killed is not-town aligned the day will immediately enter into night. If the player is town the day will continue.
9. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

9. This game will have 10 day deadlines and 2 days nights.

Mafia Game Threads / Two years of f.ds Mafia
« on: May 12, 2014, 07:13:49 pm »
It has been one year since the one year anniversary of f.ds mafia.

We have played a lot of games:

41 normal games
14 RMM games
15 Bastard games
18 Blitz games
5 Drunk games

for a total of 93 games, along with a couple in progress. We have completed less games this year than the year before. The first year we completed 57 games. This year only 36--mostly due to a lack of blitz games I believe--but still a solid number.

But we are still going strong. I have lost track of the number of unique players we have had play with us. I will try to find it out over the next few weeks as I obtain stats for new games. We have had some great new additions to the group over the last year to the point that many of them feel like they have been around since the beginning.

Anyways, a big thanks again to the originators of f.ds mafia: (Robz, Ozle, Davio, theory, Axxle, goober, TINAS, ftl and O) and everyone who makes this place a delight to participate in.

Mafia Game Threads / Mafia XLII - X-Men and X-Shots (Mafia wins!)

Mafia XLII: X-Men and X-Shots

Mods: yuma, ADK

This is an invented closed setup called: X-Shots for 13 players that deals specifically with X-Shots. I think it could potentially be run as an open setup but I want to run it as closed first. Balance has been sought, but is not completely guaranteed as this is a setup that has not been run before, but has been (I hope) well thought on and simulated a number of times.

Players may sign up to the seventh open spot now. Spots after that will not be given out at all until Faust's Philosophers Game has entered Night0.

Players:
1. Jimmmmm
2. Robz
3. chairs
4. Ahoppy  EFHW
5. Ichimaru
6. Witherweaver
7. xerxes
8. mcmcsalot
9. Delirious Deleuze Lynched Day1 - Town Cop
10. Teproc Night Killed Night1 - Town Bodyguard
11. faust

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game.

9. This game will have 10 day deadlines and 2 days nights. Because this game may run into two major American Holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) 2 days will be added to deadlines if those holidays occur during a day. If those holidays occur during a night, the night will be extended 2 days.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, blue text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.

(edit: http://y.ahoo.it/bz4XRDMA f.ds Bracket Challenge, password: theory

I chose yahoo because you can pick all of the games and the scores for them (only site that allows doing as such) compared to just picking who will win groups...)

The Draw is on Friday, there are so many good teams out there that just about any draw is frightening for any team.

The US weren't given any favors being put into group 3 with the Asia teams meaning that almost any draw will result in 2 difficult teams to face, if not 3.

I have been following the US through all of their qualifying and think they are playing perhaps the best soccer they have ever played, but I am not sure they will be able to get out of their group.

How do you think your country will do? Who would you want to face?

For reference here are the 4 groups.

Group1: Seeded Teams
Brazil
Argentina
Columbia
Uruguay
Spain
Germany
Belgium
Switzerland

Group2: UEFA, CAF and Conmebol
France
Chile
Ecuador
Ghana
Cameroon
Ivory Coast
Nigeria
Algeria

Group3: CONCACAF and AFC
Japan
Australia
Iran
South Korea
Costa Rica
Honduras
Mexico

Group4: UEFA
Netherlands
Italy
Bosnia-Herzegovina
England
Portugal
Russia
Greece
Croatia

I just ran a few simulations and came up with the following for the US:

Switzerland, Portugal, US, Ecuador: two European teams and a pretty good S. American team, really bad draw.

Columbia, Greece, US, Cameroon: all good teams, but maybe the US can pull out of this one with a win and a tie somewhere?

Argentina, US, Cameroon, England: two powerhouses and a pretty good African team. Need to get lucky (ala England 2010) to get out of this.

Uruguay, France, US, Croatia: Two good, but struggling teams of late (Uruguay, France) and a midsized European team. Again need luck to get out of this, but there is a chance.

So four draws that are all difficult and none of them even had the real powerhouses: Spain, Brazil, Germany... regardless I am stoked for 2014. There is going to be some amazing soccer played in Brazil regardless of how well the US does it will be fun to watch.

No one else may do so (except in the, hopefully unlikely, situation where the Civility Pledge has been broken) and as such twilight may extend for a long time. A back-up mod, mail-mi, will be able to provide vote counts. In the even that I am away from the Internet for an extended period of time I may ask mail-mi to lock the thread in my absence (I will post this notification in thread if this occurs.) A long twilight is intentional as I think twilights are fun. Twilights will last for at least 2 hours guaranteed.
5. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
6. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
7. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
8. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Quicktopics, except for twilight.  This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent, but will be invited to the Spectator Quicktopic.
*9. Do not edit or delete posts.  We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post. Mods will not edit posts for you.
10. This game will have hard 10-day deadlines.

4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 48 hours of no activity or upon request after 24 hours of no activity.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 2 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

Innovation General Discussion / 4-player way too powerful synergy
« on: May 19, 2013, 12:03:07 am »
Played a four player game today with a strategy I kinda stumbled into that I felt was way too powerful...

I obtained Construction: " I demand you transfer two cards from your hand to my hand, then draw a 2!
If you are the only player with five top cards, claim the Empire achievement."

Which in a 2-player game can be a good card, but in a 4-player is dominant. I played it a few times and received 5-6 cards each time. From that I obtained cards of multiple colors and Currency: "You may return any number of cards from your hand. If you do, draw and score a 2 for every different value of card you returned."

The last construction play I was able to obtain the empire achievement and playing Currency twice allowed me to score ~ 40 points and a whole lotta cards--because Engineering not only steals cards from other players, but has them draw a 2--or a higher card if the 2 card pile is gone--as a result I was scoring 1-6 cards each time I played it, generally 1 of each 2-5 and two 6s. From that I was also able to obtain the Monument achievement. By that point the draw had reach about 7 and on my next turn I drew and melded a 7 and the next I achieved 4 & 5, but could have achieved 6 & 7 for the win... as you only need 4 achievements to end the game in 4 player.

Perhaps there was a way for players to block me--having more castles would have, but I had about 6 at that time and in four player all the castles were spread pretty thin--but my opponents couldn't see anything. We thought it was extremely strong. Perhaps too strong.

Mafia Game Threads / One Year of f.DS Mafia
« on: May 11, 2013, 11:33:22 am »
One year ago the first mafia game opened for signups.

24 normal, 8 role madness, 12 blitz, 11 bastard and 2 drunk games later (that is a total of 57 games!) we are still going strong.

Thanks to pops for introducing it to this forum, thanks to the original 9 (Robz, Ozle, Davio, theory, Axxle, goober, TINAS, ftl and O) and all the other mods and players in subsequent games who have helped make this a rocking community.

From my stats we have at least 61 unique players (I am sure there are more because of uncompleted games and players who have only played in RMM or BM games, which my stats don't cover), all with great personalities and mafia playing style.

It has been a good year. We miss those who no longer play with us and welcome those who are new. I am looking forward to the next year of f.DS mafia and anticipate some great games, crazy controversies and ridiculous roles!

Forum Games / How Well Do You Guys Know Me?
« on: April 29, 2013, 12:57:22 pm »
My wife and I were recently talking about my f.ds buddies and she asked how much I thought you guys knew me. I answered that I really didn't know. It got me curious enough that I thought I would make this an open question, specifically for the forum games peeps that would know me better than the f.ds community at large. I am not really that private of a guy and find it to be more of an interesting way to discover how much of what I put into the Internet sticks in the minds of those that read it.

So if you are going to participate don't go back and reread my intro post or other posts that give out info. Just post what you remember. So what do you guys know about me?

I have already given away three things here. 1. I am married (1a. to a woman). 2. I am not that private of a guy. 3. I am a guy.

Goko Dominion Online / Shelters with $5 First Turn
« on: April 26, 2013, 01:06:03 pm »
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I came across this dilemma today and wondered about it.

So I was playing a pro-game with a mix of cards, some of which included Dark Ages. On the board was Ambassador and Upgrade--two cards that aren't nearly as good with Shelters.

However on my first turn I was given $5, meaning all coppers. So I wasn't able to see or know if shelters were being used in that game. This would impact how I would open. If shelters were around I probably wouldn't consider Upgrade or Ambassador (other scenarios include buying remake, baron or even remodel turn 1 with $5).

Luckily my opponent was nice enough to inform me that there was in fact no shelters in this game. But some games occur when both players start with $5 and both would be in the dark. In this scenario both players would have equal information and it would be fair, but still kinda annoying.

What I am wondering is why it is implemented this way and if this is the correct implementation.

Obviously when you play IRL you know beforehand if shelters/estates will be used because you have to get them out of the box. However, online, when it just randomly picks there is no way of knowing--or is there? I don't know of one--if you open with $5.

Goko Dominion Online / Pro Games with Base Only
« on: April 25, 2013, 12:22:35 pm »
I have debated about making a thread about this topic, but I think it is finally time.

I don't own any of the Goko cards. I want that to be at the top and I fully acknowledge that I can't be expected to have the complete Goko experience w/o owning all the cards. This isn't a post asking Goko to change anything because it is me that is choosing to not buy the cards at this time. (there now that is out of the way).

If I join a pro game (meaning I can't see the cards until I am in the game) that is only base cards I will write the following message:

Quote
Can I ask you a favor?

If you only have base cards could you please change the title of your game to reflect that, especially if you are hosting a pro game. Because, I and many other players do not enjoy playing only with base cards. You can change the game title when you create the game or you can host the game in casual mode.

I have no desire to play only with base cards.

Thanks, bye.

and then I leave the game, taking a hit to my rankings.

Some people genuinely don't know that they can change the name of the game and when I go back to the lounge I will see them create a game that includes "base only" in the title! Hooray!

However, I think for the most part I get extremely negative responses from people. They refuse to change the name of their game and insult me for asking and for quitting. They say it is a pain, or really difficult to change the name of a game (it isn't at all, it takes what 10 seconds) or that they won't get anyone to play with them if they change the name or only play casually. (This also isn't true, I think it can be harder to find a game this way, but that is the price of not buying the expansions).

This thread is mostly a plea to anyone who is reading to consider changing the title of your game if you are playing pro with base only. It will make me and a lot of other Dominion players much happier.

Thanks!

So I had a thought that I think I will implement in the next game I moderate and thought I would throw it out there for use/discussion.

In that past there are numerous examples of games being impacted, or potentially being impacted, because a player was not online during the night when night actions would need to be submitted. ehunt/cayvie in MXVI is an example I remember specifically because I was modding that game.

Basically what I am saying is that going into that day ehunt was in a difficult position. He knew that at day break only he (scum), Insomniac (who had become an IC via game play) and cayvie would be alive. However, cayvie had not logged into the forum for an extended period of time. As a result an observant Insomniac might have concluded that cayvie could not be scum because she was not around to submit a night action. This created an unwanted dilemma.

I think the best way to fix this is to require all players, regardless of whether or not they have a PR to check in during the night. By check in, I mean that they would be required to PM the moderator something... saying "hi" or their thoughts on the game, anything... and the game day would not start until everyone had done so. Mafia would also need to send a forum PM as well and not just check into their quicktopic for consistency's sake.

This does a few things.

1. it lets mods know who is still actively participating in the game and will allow for faster substitutions if someone is no longer playing after a night ends.
2. it will prevent speculation that occurs if a game is delayed because a PR or mafia has disappeared

I think it will also be necessary to ask any PRs, if they go on VLA, to submit a player on whom to use their power during the night before they go VLA. This can be subject to change if the VLA player is able to get access or return to the game before night ends.

Do you guys think this would be useful? Do you see any problems that might come up that I am overlooking? It hasn't been a big issue, but I can easily see it becoming a game altering one if the right situation formed to create it.

Dominion General Discussion / Two Great Uses for Band of Misfits
« on: April 16, 2013, 07:51:20 pm »
From the beginning Band of Misfits is a card that I have never completely obtained a solid grasp of, but I recently played a game--wish I would have grabbed the log--in which it was extremely useful, especially with two cards: Tournament and Coppersmith.

On a board that had: Crossroads, Swindler, Urchin, Coppersmith, Tournament, Trader, Silk Road, Band of Misfits, Boarder Village and one other card I opened 5/2.

I quickly realized that Band of Misfits would be a key card in allowing me to use it as coppersmith in hands were I had 3 or 4 copper to quickly get up to 6 or 8. Using it I scored an early gold and an early province leading me to obtain 3/5 of the Prizes. I was able to use BOM as Tournament later in the game when I had a province in hand. I think I only bought 1 Tournament, which was nice because using BOM I didn't have to worry about it being a dud against another player's revealed Province.

After losing six straight times to my wife--who had never heard of Innovation previously--I finally defeated her in the seventh game last night. In every game previously I was ahead by 3-4 achievements and she would come back for the win and crush me without any help from me aside from explaining the basic rules and clarifying card abilities.

On the bright side however, she now loves Innovation and is the one who asks to play it. Whereas with Dominion I have to plead with her to play it with me.

Forum Games / Exploring a Newbie Game(s)
« on: January 05, 2013, 05:59:25 pm »
Figured we could use a thread for this topic. To be clear this is not a signup thread for a newbie game, but a place to discuss the potential newbie games, who would host newbie games, when to host newbie games and who would play newbie games. Also potentially to allows new players to come here to find out where the best place to start playing is.

Ashersky suggested F11, see the quote below as a potential game type to use as well as potential new player who would like to join.
Further to the true newbie game--do we want it run concurrently with other games?  That is, as a separate category?

If so, I can mod if I get some help.  I'd run F11 (http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=F11) with basically no flavor.  The game would be for raerae, mcmcsalot, ipoloil, and any other newbies.  Maybe Jimmmmm?  Anyone else?

As in past games I think it is viable to keep some slots open for newer players and also allow the signup thread to open for a bit longer to allow for newer players to notice it and sign up--as they wont' notice the signup as quickly as say other active players.

General Discussion / My Post to Boast a Bit (A Place to Talk About Books)
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:35:48 pm »
I recently quit facebook and as such I now have nowhere to post about my life accomplishments to people that I know. So instead I thought I would brag here with people that I don't know about how cool I am and accomplished one of my goals this year.

A few weeks ago I completed my goal of reading 40 books this year... I am now up to 43 and hope to hit 50.

Favorite books from this year include:

This Earth of Mankind (The whole Buru Quartet is an amazing look at colonial Indonesia)
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Fun, quirky non-stereotypical book about high school)
Cloud Atlas (already been discussed on this forum, but is seriously awesome)
Lolita (been on my list for years, but finally was able to get over that the book was about pedophila, it ended up being a really well written book that made me uncomfortable, but well written books are supposed to do that)
Watership Down (how I never heard of this book as a kid I don't know... It is like Lord of the Rings with rabbits)
The Ragged Trouser Philanthropist (in defense of socialism)
Rooftops of Tehran (a coming to age book set in Iran in the 1970s)
