The Rules:

The Golden Rule:

This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:

1. No communication between players outside of the game thread or shared QTs at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by PM.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
5. All night actions must be submitted within 24 hours of day ending.
6. Players must post once every 24 hours.
7. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
8. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
9. Cryptography is not allowed.
10. The time between a lynch being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the lynched player.
11. Dead players may not post in thread or QT. A lynched player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
12. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:

1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: Unvote or Unvote: Playername. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may Vote: no lynch.
5. Lynches occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, a lynch cannot be undone.
6. If a majority lynch is not reached by the deadline, no lynch occurs.
7. If the game goes on for 3 days and 3 nights without a lynch or night kill, town wins.

The Rest:

1. Bold, green text is reserved for the Mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please PM the Mod. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via PM. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
7. Prods will be issued by request after 24 hours of inactivity. Players are subject to replacement or modkill upon the third prod request.
8. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.

Deadlines:

1. Days will last seven IRL days.
2. Nights will last two IRL days.

Flavor:

Everyone will have a super awesome (!!!) flavor name! Flavor is not indicative of alignment.

Other Games / f.d Steam Group/Steam discussion
« on: March 10, 2017, 11:37:53 am »
I know there's already an old thread about this in general discussion but I thought I'd repost it since the group has been pretty inactive and could use some new blood. Besides, I've got a ton of co-op/multiplayer games and not a lot of people to play them with!  :'(

Here's the link to the group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dominionstrategy

If anyone wants to add me my steam name is Tiny Wings.

You could also use this thread to discuss sales, game reviews, your undying love for No Man's Sky, etc.

General Discussion / The Tuvalu Terror: Ozle and the Decline of Civility
« on: February 28, 2017, 07:20:58 pm »
Introduction

More than 60 years after the event, the name "Ozle" still strikes fear in the hearts of all Tuvalu natives, dredging up repressed memories of what became known simply as "The Ozle Incident". Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, had never experienced an incident such as this, yet it was inevitable that it would happen eventually.
In this book I will examine the origins of Ozle and his birthplace and natural habitat, Tuvalu. Primary sources are few and secondary sources are clearly biased, written to please Ozle VI in the seventh century. Through this close examination, I hope to present a picture of the Ozle family and their surroundings through the ages, and attempt to provide context to the infamous "incident" that would occur that fateful day in 2012.

Chapter 1 - Ossle the Oaf, 255-524

The Ellice Islands in the year 255 A.D. were volatile and deadly. Volcanic activity was common and the natives were cannibalistic and ruthless. They called themselves Ossoites, having originated from a large island called Osso that had mysteriously sunk into the ocean in a matter of five days some 150 years prior. When the Ossoite refugees arrived at their new home, they were quickly thrust into an ongoing struggle between two warring factions of dinosaurs, the last of which had survived in the Ellice Islands. With nowhere else to go, the Ossoite king, Roger, did all he could to stay out of the conflict and keep his people out of harm's way, taking shelter in caves and fashioning crude weapons and traps for any dinosaur that happened to stray from the battle in search of food. The Ossoite people survived in this way for the next 200 years until the last of the Dinosaurs died of food poisoning from ingesting stray Ossoites, who had by now discovered a unique toxin their bodies secreted to keep predators at bay.
In the year 477 King Roger V, revered by his people, died without designating an heir. In this era succession to the throne was not necessarily a family affair, but rather was determined by the first person to volunteer to change their name to "Roger", for the glory of the kingdom. The number six being an ill omen and universally regarded as a completely useless number in Ossoite society, nobody would take the crown. The Ossoites were kingless for a time and anarchy reigned. Homes were pillaged, blood fueds festered and crops were burnt to the ground. The only way to restore law and order was for a new king to be risen. But who would dare ascend to the crown with the name Roger VI? Nobody. And so it was that a local oaf, as a result of a drunken game of Truth or Dare, claimed the throne as Ossle. The population was stunned. Roger was all they had known, was all their parents and grandparents had known. Any other names were unthinkable. But in an incredible moment in world history, when all signs pointed to a calamity of immense proportions, a civil war or even a potential self-inflicted eradication of the Ossoite people, nothing happened. Quarrels ceased, crops were grown and harvested in peace, and a golden age for the Ossoites seemed on the horizon. But nobody knew why.
Certainly it wasn't as a result of King Ossle's new policies, for there weren't any. Ossle, as shocked as anyone else, reasoned that if there are no societal issues that he could see from atop his throne, there was no use in putting forth solutions. So he ate, drank, slept, and did little else until his death in 524.

Chapter 2 - The Prophecy, 524-1526

With Ossle's negligence as a foundation for a peaceful and functioning society, lethargy became the order of the day starting with the king and trickling down to the common farmers and laborers of the islands. But a seemingly dormant society can still bring about drastic change, as the Ossoites did in the next millenium. In fact, almost everything changed, most importantly the language. In 1320 a manuscript detailed some of the changes in the last 800 years. The people now referred to themselves as "Ozles". The islands were collectively referred to as Tuvalu, and, most remarkably of all, the number six had fallen into favor. As a result of the latter, every king since Ossle had also been named Ossle, or "Ozle" beginning in the mid-ninth century.
Regardless of these shifts, Ozle architecture remained static, fashioned from preserved dinosaur bones. Technology was non-existent. Crops were grown exactly the same way they were 1000 years before and the Ozle diet remained much the same. It seemed as though Tuvalu was due for a new... development.
On December 30th, 1526, King Ozle CCXXII was doing what the previous 221 kings did during their rule: nothing. And he was content, and so were Tuvalu's citizens. But nevertheless something nagged at him. A few days earlier a servent had discovered something extraordinary on the beach and immediately brought it to the king. The records don't indicate what this item might be which is endlessly frustrating as the scribes had meticulously recorded every move of the Ozles for the past 1000 years, when absolutely nothing of consequence happened. And now, at possibly the most important moment in Tuvalu's history, silence. What the hell were they thinking? It makes me so mad sometimes I just.... but I digress. The object was brought before the king and he quickly summoned his son, Ozle, and dismissed everyone else. To his son he said these fateful words: "Half a millenium from now, it will occur. The ultimate- boy, pull up your damn pants! No you can't leave, I haven't even told you what will happen! What? You can't be serious. Right now? This very moment? It can't wait? Fine, I'll tell you later."

Chapter 3 - The Ozle's Redemption - 1526-2012

That day, everything changed. Ozles still ruled over the land, Tuvalu largely remained unchanged, but a disturbance in the force was detected, so to say. For almost 500 years Tuvalu's population became increasingly uneasy and restless. In 1987 an Ozle was born. He was different from everyone else, and he was ambitious. His aspirations had far-reaching effects, unknowingly influencing everyone around him and changing the way people interacted with their surroundings. He would gather together with other young men and engage in a ritual called an RPG, something that had been strictly forbidden for centuries. He obtained reading material about something called "video games" and distributed them liberally. But despite these influences, the call of his ancestors did not go unheard. The Ozle tradition lived on inside of him as it did with all the Ozles. And so he invoked his forefathers, prayed derply, and fulfilled the prophecy on February 9, 2012.

So I immediately thought the focus should be on Worker's Village, Wharf, and Bridge but a little too late in the game I realized Embassy would be really nice for sifting (and the on-gain attack!) and then I thought maybe Hunting Party would've been better than Wharf. What do you think about this specific board and in general how do you weigh different draw cards against eachother? Thanks

2. Personal communication outside of the forum postings is NOT ALLOWED unless your Role PM specifically allows it.  For example, Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage in their specified QT.
3. If you have a role with a Night action, your choices are due to both mods by the posted deadline (generally 48 hours from Night start during the first few Nights; later Nights may have shorter deadlines).  If we do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.  In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used.  Generally, one team member may submit the Night Actions for all team members.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mods know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.  Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax!  Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Quicktopics, except for twilight.  This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent, but will be invited to the Spectator Quicktopic.

Down 6 provinces, 8 duchys, and 8 estates, I somehow pull through. However, this engine took forever to get going and I'm sure I could've played it better. I made a few really obvious mistakes but let me know if I could've had it up and running any sooner.

So I got a jump on HPs, trashed down pretty quick and started drawing my deck in no time. And then I thought... "now what?" My opponent was trashing golds with bishop and using the market square reaction to gain more golds but I thought it'd be better to double province every turn, which I wasn't able to do anyway. Should I have done the same and trashed golds for VP? Should I have gotten more throne rooms? Some oracles? Help me out here!

First of all, I'm curious about our openings. I went trader/scheme thinking that trader is good defense against a possible marauder and maybe I can pick up a few silvers early on, and I can use scheme to put my vaults back on top of the deck. He went smugglers/talisman. I was jealous of his smugglers a little bit but I'm not sure about the talisman or really if just silver/silver is best here.

The other thing I'm curious about is his bishop/fortress strategy. I don't think he utilized this strategy as well as he could've but I think if he did it could've been viable given that there's no +buy. What do you think?

And lastly, how did I lose this game? I got two platinums before he got one, I got a couple vaults before he did and I thought my deck was thinner or at least I was buying more money instead of marauder, talisman, fortress, etc. My attitude towards caravan is that it's just a good card that fits anywhere. Is this wrong or does it really have a place here?

Yes, I'm aware it's 2:53am while I'm posting this. Shutup. And thank you.

The plan was skip baron and trash hunting grounds late in the game for extra points. I think it was a shitty strategy and was poorly executed anyway. Sooo... definitely get the baron, right? And with the extra buy(s) buy more engine components and gold along the way?

I don't know why I thought of this but I just remembered that the first CD that I bought with my own money was the soundtrack to the first Pokemon movie. The second was Astro Lounge by Smash Mouth. I was wondering if anybody else remembered their first purchases and if they were as dumb as mine.

Help! / Which engine is better?

Code: [Select]
Native Village, Market Square, Herald, Moneylender, Baker, Butcher, Cache, Merchant Ship, Adventurer, Nobles

My opponent went for nv/nobles and I went for herald/baker (although the baker part never really got there) and even though I lost this pretty bad, I think the herald engine should still be pretty strong if played optimally. I think I should've gotten a second butcher pretty early and pushed for bakers harder. Maybe ignore nobles altogether? Help me out here!

Dominion Videos and Streams / Videos on specific strategies?
« on: March 24, 2014, 07:45:12 pm »
Hi everybody (hi Dr. Nick!). I love all the videos and streams and whatnot, but I was thinking about videos dealing with specific strategies. What if someone made a series of videos detailing big money, engines, and rushes with a few different examples of the different types of each? The big money video, for example, could show the three best big money enablers in action, and whatever else deserves and honorable mention. Videos could also be made about specific combos. Maybe one video dedicated to masterpiece/feodum, one video on NV/bridge, etc. and maybe even videos about the golden deck.

All the articles are awesome but some people are more visual learners and this way people can build the same decks that are used in the videos and try them out for themselves. I think this could be a very valuable series for beginners and more advanced players as well, and could be used for reference and to supplement the articles. What do you guys think?

Help! / Possible pirate ship board?

I didn't know what the hell to do here. There's no +buy, FV+Library is weak, trashing just invites pirate ship. I played super sloppy and just fumbled my way around and eventually got into a moneyless expand into provinces sorta thing, albeit a poorly built one. Could pirate ship be the way to go here?

Help! / The engine that couldn't

Code: [Select]
Pawn, Scrying Pool, Lookout, Caravan, Butcher, Contraband, Embassy, Graverobber, Farmland, Grand Market

So first of all, I took a couple weeks or so off from Dominion so I'm rusty. Second of all, I suck at Dominion anyway. I know this is a strong engine that SHOULD win no problem here. But I never got to the GMs, barely got a couple scrying pools, and just couldn't build this engine up fast enough. I hit 1p twice but I'm sure I made some mistakes here. Maybe I should've picked up a butcher or two and used them to get caravans and GMs? I don't know. What do you guys think?
