I'm trying my hand at making YouTube videos and live streaming on Twitch. Maybe you'd like to watch them? I want to do some different stuff and see how it turns out, so any feedback you have on anything I'm doing is appreciated.

I want there to be a good mix of serious gameplay, experimental/learning gameplay, and casual gameplay. I want it to be fun to watch and/or help viewers learn from me -- at least one of those, but hopefully a lot of both. If you want more or less of any of this, please give feedback.

I added five new videos to the second playlist.

...I'm wondering if people are enjoying the more casual format or if I should go back to something more serious. I think there are still plenty of things to be learned from the games even though I'm just a level 30-ish player playing in fun-mode, but I don't know for sure what the reasons are for people watching these videos.

I like the interplay, even if he doesn't always have a lot to say or can't for strategic purposes.  You can probably mix in a few 'normal' games to, though.

I love the videos, so whichever way will encourage you to play more is fine with me.

Having said that, I'm working on learning from the videos and so really enjoy the serious ones. If you do less serious ones, I would love it if you would take a few minutes at the end to reflect over how you would play that board differently if you were to do it again/do it seriously.

It's very easy for me to record games playing with dethwing, since we play so often and I don't have to worry about asking my opponent if it's OK to record, or if the game is going to be good, etc. It's very easy for me to crank out lots of games like that, and as long as people like seeing them I suppose I'll continue to make them. Perhaps a post-mortem is appropriate. I think we did that in a couple of games and looking back, those are some of the better videos.

...but I don't have much variety, that's for sure. I finally feel like there's a decent format/chemistry for these videos, so maybe I'll move on to something different. That was one of my goals for making these videos, is to have lots of "different" things.

Note that my commentary for Loser's Bracket Round 3 isn't something I'm proud of, I think the first few games' commentary is terrible, really. If it wasn't a tournament match, I would have scrapped it. Oh well. We can't all be perfect. You have been warned.

I've edited the first post, changing a couple of things.

First, I consolidated all of the DS 2012 Tournament playlists into one playlist.

Next, I changed the "Games with dethwing" playlist into "Games with IRL Friends" playlist and added five new games I recorded last night to it. There are a couple of three-player games on there as well and I tried to integrate some suggestions from "You, The Viewer" on these videos (discussion of strategy after the game is over).

For Goko logs, the only easy way is to get the link when you finish the game. Otherwise, you can go to the day's logs, download the directory, and search those files for your username, but that's one hell of a time commitment.

It's a bit more difficult and takes more time, as you don't get a zip of all logs of the day, but have to download each file seperately, and this has a bit more overhead.  I have a script somewhere that downloads everything from goko, not sure if I can find it...

About the logs: Once I get a hold of a linux command line with web access, I shall definitely try that. All logs except for the games with other YouTubers have been added to the descriptions, and thanks everyone for your help there.

I'm looking to start a series of Dominion Tutorial videos. I've made the first block of them, and I updated the OP with a link to the playlist:

I might make some changes to the videos if it seems like a good idea, but I'm reasonably happy with the way they've turned out so far. Feedback/constructive criticism on any facet of this tutorial is definitely appreciated, even if it seems nit-picky, so please don't be shy; it's not hard for me to edit and/or re-do parts of these videos.

I'm planning to make more videos in the tutorial series, which will start to cover more in-depth strategy topics.

Feedback on existing videos, topics for future videos, all that kind of stuff is welcome. If you think I say something that's worded unclearly, let me know. If you think should mention an extra thing or leave something out because it's confusing, let me know. If you think the video or audio quality of a particular part could be increased or changed to help significantly, let me know. All comments, questions, nitpicks, etc. are welcome. It's not difficult for me to re-shoot or edit portions of these videos.

Added a buttload of games between yesterday and today (so many that it took over 24 hours to upload them all) I think this is a really good batch. There are some boring ones, sure, but there is some super-interesting stuff that happens as well.

Also, this is my first really big run of Goko videos using the Log Parser, which I think might have caused some video issues. The last four videos -- does anyone have a problem with the quality of those videos? If so, I'm not sure what I can do about it besides never edit my videos for any reason and make them take 2 hours each to upload.

After making these videos, I am convinced now that the best possible Dominion videos must contain conversation between the people playing the game.

The videos of this format have probably less focus in strategy, but are more entertaining in my point of view.
But I really like how playing more casual games give you the opportunity to try more strategies out which you otherwise wouldn't be able to do in a more competitive setting, like Tournaments. Just view the first of those 3 games to see Adams cool Watchtower/Storeroom engine.

I think the more casual setting for the videos might be more of a function of the way I like to play Dominion, and the chatter just feeds that. I could be super-serious if I wanted to; and I've done that a couple of times, but I ended up muting Nick for almost all of the video . But yeah, if you ever want to play with me again after watching the third video, then maybe this has a future

I know poker TV shows are post-commentated (the announcers are, at least) but you can also hear the players chatting at the tables as well. I imagine if there was a way to hear the players' thoughts on poker shows, it would provide a ton of insight, but hey, we have that ability... sort of.

My strategy isn't always completely formulated at the beginning of the game, and I believe there is something to be gained from hearing comments in-game, but I don't think you're talking about getting rid of that, no?

Watching these pairs of videos that were posted today, I felt like they were very similar. The back-and-forth banter, which makes up maybe 70-80% of the commentary is the same on both videos, so it might make sense to combine the two into one video. Is this what you're getting at?

- We need a way to see both players' hands at once, and a readable game log along with that at the very least. I'm not sure how to accomplish this.

Technically, through massive editing one could show both sides of the game alternating (Because of Goko's layout it would be hard to show both players on one screen) and cut the audio so that it syncs with both of them.  I know I could do it.  But I'm not going to because it would take a lot of time.

Interesting.. of course this has the problem that a Goko screen of smaller size is probably very hard to read.  Would have to test it to know for sure.

You could have just one log displayed on the screen too... or even scroll through the post-game log (or just link to it).

You know, if we just found some way to never mute each other at the same time, the editing for this would get a lot easier, that way all you have to do is a Picture-In-Picture type of thing and combine the audio (no pausing and re-syncing the video) -- this fixes our audio quality problems too. That large area where your hand is at the bottom could probably be split in half and since the cards in your hand are so big. I know I'm capable of doing the audio portion of this, but the video portion is something my software can't do ATM.

It would be easy for me to process the audio, I use Audacity (and it's free). From what you described of your video software it might be able to handle the video part. I'm not opposed to buying video editing software if it does what I need it to do: if this much video editing is not difficult for you maybe you can send me a link? That way I can just do all the editing...

Right. It severely reduced my ability to troll my opponents in the early game

That's happened to me so many times, which is why I make myself go through that process whenever I examine a kingdom. It's saved me from building an engine that has no chance of working because of lack of a critical component.

Dookie would make more sense if the word were Dukie, which you can of course maybe argue would be a more logical word. But it doesn't make any sense as is. Though you are definitely right, and I want to reiterate, this is NOT an American thing, just these two. It also drives me a little nuts every time it is said, but whatever - I am not going to tell someone they should say a word differently unless I really can't understand them or they genuinely don't know it's a mispronunciation.

I pronounce it that way because a) It's run by a Duke and b)  because "ch", in that context, seemed more suitable as a hard sound, like in "ache."  English doesn't exactly have a hard-and-fast rule for how to pronounce "ch."

Actually, if you want to fix something the first thing I would do would be to not make "Hi, YouTube!" quite so loud. Enthusiastic is fine, but it is just quite sudden, and most of all louder than the rest of the video.

Nah, a) because "Duchess" in that pronunciation is a MUCH more common word than "Duchy" and b) the soft "ch" makes more sense to me in that context anyway.

I've used two during my time. The majority of my videos used CamStudio, which is free. I actually really like it and I'm considering continuing to use it for capturing a lot of my videos. My issue with it is that it can only record audio from one source at a time, so if I have someone on Skype, I have to put their sound through my speakers and have my microphone pick it up from there. That decreases the quality of their voice on the video makes it so I can't adjust relative volume after the video is recorded, and provides feedback issues on their end of Skype. More recently I've used CamTasia 8 (well, a free trial of it which has now expired) to record and edit videos (I was using Windows Movie Maker 2.6 to edit before, because I didn't like the newer versions of WMM). I can add webcam stuff, and do Picture-In-Picture business. Once I figured out how to use it well I was able to do lots of stuff with it that I like. I'm likely going to buy the software this week. Camtasia is the same one I use.  It's very simple and hasn't crashed on me or  anything yet (which Camstudio used to do frequently).

I'm finally getting around to watching the videos:

1. (These numbers will be the numbers of the games) Not much to say here other than what I commented after the game was over, and I bought the gold because my reshuffle was coming up...  That was a boring game.
2. I realized there was two routes: Workshop/Gardens and Rebuild.  I was pretty sure Rebuild would win, and...  it did.  I was naming Gardens pretty much for fun in that game with me going Rebuild and you going for Gardens.  It was funny, while I was watching it, I was thinking, "Maybe I should've been naming Estates to get more points quickly."  Then you said the same thing...  Also, later, I named Duchy because I knew most of my Estates were gone and I was trying to ramp up my points as quickly as possible (so I shot for Colonies).
3. I was going for a Goons engine.  It flopped.  Miserably.  And I didn't see the Vineyards, as I said.  And I have no idea why I was doing double-Sage...  Why didn't I get a Stables or something?  I just misplayed a lot during this game...
4. I decided on Ironmonger-BM right from the start.  I thought about getting a few GMs, but I realized a bit too late that it was a bit too late at that point anyway...  Also, I break PPR if I need both Provinces to win, because if they get the Province I leave them I'm doomed anyway.

I do love your introduction videos to Dominion (and other games), but I don't like it when you address an audience of beginning players in your streams. For the streams I do enjoy most to watch you play in that Goko 6000+ level range and explain your thoughts for player just below you (5000-6000). Just leading edge of Dominion :-)

For the 3rd game with psyduck, why did you decide to get a second Jack, but no advisor at all? Even if he denied you a markgrave, you could just scavenge it back on top and draw it with your next draw card, or is that just working in my dreams?

What I was thinking is that I had an extra Margrave in hand after drawing my deck and extra space for terminals in my deck. I thought Jack would be just a Silver-gainer and it would help me economy, not really much more than that. Even later in the game I realized it was a mistake.

I'm actually thinking another Scavenger would have been a better buy there, it would have given me economy and also reliability. I worry about Advisor in that deck because my economy comes from treasures. I'm really relying on my Margraves to draw my deck and it's so likely that Advisor will turn up some combination of Treasures/Green and draw that it would be very easy for those to get denied. At that point I only had one Scavenger so that could have already been denied or I might not have it in hand yet. The turn I got Province/Jack/FV probably should have just been Province/Margrave.

And I'm glad you like my videos/streams! When I started I didn't know how serious I wanted to be with my videos, but over time I think I've found the right balance of being entertaining while not sucking at Dominion so much that people just don't want to watch. At least it works for me

Well, then there's really not much you could have done about this game.
Rebuild is just silly.

So part of the reason I said I had already lost the match was because I was playing Rebuild against AI from the second seat, but also because of the place I was mentally. I knew I'd have to play perfectly and get lucky to beat him that game, and there was no way I would play perfectly. And I didn't.

But after some discussion, people were talking about the Minion engine that could have been stronger than Rebuild, so I tried it out (starts at about 12:30). Turns out the engine should beat the pants off Rebuild here.

Why? Well the engine wants to open Embargo because it wants to hit $5 but doesn't want a Silver in the deck, and an early Embargo on Rebuilds is quite strong, much stronger than I thought it would be. Second, Minion is just one of those cards where if you let your opponent have all of them, you just lose  no matter what (I know that's not entirely true, but Minion's power is quite strong). I'm not really convinced yet that the Minion attack really counters Rebuild, but not contesting Minions is a big deal and it shows on this particular board.

That was kind of the point: the first person to gain an embargoed Curse in a 6-player game would instantly see his Gardens upped by 6VP each.

There's hardly any way you could end that game on a win while Qvists engine-variant has just like all of the control. I'm still underestimating endgame control, I think. Anyways, I still can't believe that claim, that at least 70% of all boards are engine boards. I mean, there are still slogs and rushes and combos and even big money.
It would be nice to see you both try out some more of these splitscreen videos and espacially if you try different things.

You can build an engine on almost any board. Slogs, rushes and combos need very specific boards in order to work, and big money needs pretty much a board with absolutely nothing else or at most a very weak engine in order to work. Unless it's a very strong big money board, but those are as rare as rushes.

Probably I'm just not recognizing irony, but:
It's a mistyping. Plus, I never heard the word "nifty" anytime before this post. I had to leo its meaning and I don't think, elegant or ingenious is the right word. I really talked about plain strength.

PS: As you can guess, I'm not a native speaker. And I like to place commas, where I believe them to be correct (like in German).

Yeah, I know exactly what happened there, and it's actually amazing. I've been trying forever to get OBS to pipe my system sound directly to the stream and failing, so I've been putting it on my speakers and letting my microphone catch it from there. This makes the audio quality pretty bad.

Earlier this stream I was messing with my audio settings and I somehow fixed it and didn't realize it, so now I don't have to have my speakers on and my opponent's commentary should sound much better on the live streams

That gardens-Count-Masterpiece three player game ("Dominion is not a Political Game") is the perfect example of why I LOVE three player Dominion. The engine players just can't let the third person get 12 gardens, but who's going to stop him? When do you switch to Gardens? Duchies? And no point counter?! The SUSPENSE! The EXCITEMENT!

Hey, on your league match with msprs (is that the correct spelling?) on game 5, one of you had the chance to buy a Bishop in the Black Market. Bishop might not be the best card here, but you could build something that uses Soothsayer to deal curses and gain golds mid-turn, draw that gold and Bishop it for 4 points. I guess, doing this about 3-4 times would have been game here, since you can then delay greening until the very end.

That seems like it might a reasonable thing to do if you already have a few villages from the Black Market and you were still pretty thin. I don't remember when I saw the Bishop but given how quickly that deck stalled, and given that I was short on draw (lost the Minion split 4-6) that might have been a smart thing to do...
