I don't think the board is boring. I mean, a lot on it screams "engine", Colonies, Nobles, KC, Ironworks, Caravan, but it doesn't have any +buy to really go for the big megaturn. But there is IW/Upgrade, and because of KC a chain to $8. And some strong gainers with IW and Warehouse/Tunnel. There is Tunnel/Warehouse itself, but for Colonies that is not the greates thing ever, there is Ironworks/alt-VP (GH, Tunnel), but that's probably also countered by the Colonies.

Simulation challenge perhaps.  The kingdom would be challenging but I think it would be manageable.  Ironworks and Upgrade can be difficult but I think their play rules could be done correctly with enough tweaking.
