Weekly Design Contest #193 The Flora of Dominion
« on: July 18, 2023, 04:20:34 pm »

There have been a number of cards, particularly in the Menagerie expansion, which have been named after animals. There have been few cards to date though that have been named after plants. This will be the next competition.

Design a card or horizontal that is named after a plant.

There are several cards that are thematically linked to plants such as Gardens, Groundskeeper, Vineyard, Herbalist or Harvest. Farming and food are other potentially plant related themes that have been used for naming cards. I am sure there are plenty of other ways that a card can be linked to a plant, I can think of a few (but I am not going to give them away, ha!).

Rules (not many)
- The name of any entry must either be a plant or be obviously derived from the name of a plant.
- Any official card or horizontal type is permitted.

Judging criteria.
I will not playtest cards. It will be down to my opinion on how I think they card will play. Things I will consider.
- Theme. I will be looking for cards that are in some way analogous to the plant they are named after, or cards that tie into an already established plant related theme.
- How much I like the concept of the card.
- How much fun do I think the card will be to play with.
- How I think the card will fit into common deck types.
- Does the card have any interesting interactions.
- Does the card have any problematic interactions.

Deadline for entries will be 25th July, one week from now.

Real Entry:
Quote
Potted Flower
$3 - Plant
When you play a card from the pile with your flower token on it, you may set this aside from your hand.
If you do: +1 Card, +1 Buy, and this turn, when you gain a non-Action card costing at least $4, +1 VP.
Discard this in clean-up.
-
When you gain this, put your Flower Token on an Action supply pile costing up to $4.
Potted flowers on their own aren't worth anything, but the're useful for adding appeal to your other cards.
(FAQ: There are no special rules for the "Plant" type. They cannot be played like Action/Treasure/Night cards, only set aside from your hand for its effect as it says on the card. When you gain a Potted Flower beyond the first, you may move your Flower token to a different Action pile costing up to $4, but you don't have to.)

----------------------------------------------------
Joke Entry:
Quote
Overgrown Estate
$3 - Action - Attack - Victory - Shelter
You may discard a Copper or Wild Weeds. If you do, +$2 and all players gain a Wild Weeds.
-
Worth 0 VP if you have any Wild Weeds. Otherwise, Worth 1 VP.
When you trash this, +1 Card.

Quote
Wild Weeds
$0 - Treasure
+$1.
Gain a Wild Weeds.
FAQ: Overgrown Estate is a Kingdom card pile, but when shelters are used, start with one of these Overgrown Estates in place of the original Overgrown Estates. Use ten more Wild Weeds as there are Curses in the Supply. (30 Wild Weeds for a 3-player game.)

Wheat 5$ Treasure
+2 $
+1 buy

If this card is discarded, except during clean-up, reveal the top 2 cards of your deck, then discard them. +1 coffer per differently named card revealed.

Obvious synergy with harvest is obvious, but its also a neat consolation price if you get hit with a knight that tries to rob your crop. Its a bit like spices, but of course this can trigger more often, even if under more specific conditions.

Mistletoe
Treasure - Attack - $5
+$1
Each other player with 5 or more cards in hand discards a Treasure card (or reveals a hand with no Treasure cards).
Play one of the cards discarded that way, leaving it there.

Upd: added +$1 for balance

I like this but I doubt that it is stronger than Militia and thus a $5.

Here is a plant Traveler series:

Quote
Small Seed
$4 Action - Traveller
You may do this up to two times: discard a card to draw a card and +$1.
Then choose one: +1 Action; or +1 Buy.
-
When you discard this from play, you may trash this and a Treasure card from your Hand for a Plain Plant.

Plain Plant
$5* Action - Traveller
+1 Card
+1 Actions

You may trash a Treasure from your Hand to choose one: gain a Silver to your Hand; or +1 Buy and +$1.
-
When you discard this from play, you may exchange this and another card from your Hand for a Bold Blossom. (Not in the Supply)

Bold Blossom
$6* Treasure - Duration
+1 Buy
You may set up to four cards under this revealing them for +$1 per differently named card.
At the start of your next turn put the cards into your Hand and +1 Action. (Not in the Supply)

Bold Blossom is cool but Small Seed is uninspired (just copying an official card) and Plain Plant is pretty weak.

Plenty of fruit is here for the picking, but don't dawdle too long with thinning and payload or else the tree will be bare.

I'd recommend saying "when the player to your right plays..." because of the way it scales in multiplayer especially in games where Gold is a good payload.
This card can sometimes be crazy strong and other times be a plain terminal Silver.

Looks weak. Lots of Kingdoms in which Gold is forsaken or rarely played and the card requires an average Gold play above 1 per turn to justify its price relative to Cargo Ship.

I think it would be even weak at $3.

Poison Ivy
- Action Duration Attack
Each other player may discard a Curse, a Poison Ivy, or two Victory cards (revealed). If they don’t, they gain a Curse.
At the start of your next turn, +3 Cards.

Notes: With Mountebank removed in Prosperity 2e for being too brutal, this attack space is now open.

It seems weaker than the very powerful Sea Witch, which seems fine. Like Sea Witch, if you open it and play it on turn 3, it will miss the shuffle, which slows down how quickly it can snowball in favor of a player with a 5/2 opening.

Don’t always discard your Poison Ivy to avoid a Curse! But there are times when you will want to do it.

Good point, changed it. It's can already situationally draw a lot of cards, certainly doesn't need to be twice as explosive in 3p.

It's a treasure so it doesn't consume an action.

Small Seed is now far too powerful for $4. A mandatory cantrip trasher is already too good for $4 and this has tons of other bonuses. It’s a Village, the trashing is optional, and it provides extra bonuses when a card is trashed. Even at $5 this would compare favourably to Junk Dealer which is a strong $5.

Quote
Weeping Willow
$4 - Action

+1 Buy
+$2

At the end of your Buy phase this turn, if you have at least 2 unused Buys, set this aside and put it in your hand at end of turn. Otherwise, gain a Will-o’-Wisp.

Of course the tree has to be a Woodcutter variant. Originally it cost $5 and was a Curser when you had 1 unused buy, but it’s simpler and better at without the attack.

My submission- a split pile with lumberjack on top (with catapult vibes but dealing with greening)
Play on the meaning of greening.
And yes woodcutter is a card already but it is a removed card so i though that was ok.

I haved played enough games with Druid + Swamp's Gift to confidently claim that this is too strong.
Wish gaining is strong and often centralizing with a mere, lousy Buy attached, so it most be pretty strong if it is attached to a Woodcutter.

Looks pretty centralizing. Of course there is the matching risk, but otherwise $5 for a 3VP Hireling seems pretty sweet.

$9* Since you must also invest in a Brambles. So it's a two stop cards Hireling. But yes, still a good deal if you can get deck control. Gotta give some love to the Duchies.

Not really as you want Brambles to trash anyway (and even with better trashing, it might the only +1 Buy card which already reveals a simple way to nerf the card).

I totally like the Duchy thingy, anything with basic Supply cards is interesting. But this seems to strong; as you trash down before you Hireling the matching risk is likely low.
