Weekly Design Contest / Weekly Design Contest #137: From Whence It Came
« on: December 09, 2021, 09:54:16 am »
WDC #137: From Whence It Came

  • Design a card that contains the text "return this"
  • If your card is a non-supply card, State, or Artifact, please also submit a Supply card that interacts with it
  • Examples of official cards that qualify include Experiment, Horse Traders, Madman, Wish, Horse, Way of the Butterfly, Way of the Horse, Deluded, Envious
  • I can bend the first rule if you want the card to say "return it" rather than "return this" as long as it would have the same meaning if the phrases were substituted (see Spoils and Encampment)
  • This is similar to Contest #93, but your submission doesn't need to return itself to its pile (see Horse Trader)
The deadline will be Thursday, December 16th at 11:59PM ET or 24 hours after I post the 24-hour notice (whichever comes later).

Variants and Fan Cards / Fan Card Mechanics Week 23: Laying Down The Law
« on: November 11, 2021, 01:51:44 pm »
Laws are landscapes that come in sets of 3 4, and provide any effect that will apply to a player's turn.

The rules are as follows:
  • No more than one set of Laws should be used per game
  • Each player will have a wooden cube in their colour to track which Law will apply on their turn
  • Starting on Turn 3, at the start of each player's turn, that player will place their wooden cube on one of the available Laws
  • In a 2-player game, players cannot place their cube on a Law that already contains the other player's cube.  In a game with 3-5 players, players cannot place their cube on a Law that already contains two cubes. In a game with 6 players, players cannot place their cube on a Law that already contains three cubes In a game with 3-6 players, players cannot place their cube on a Law that already contains two cubes.
  • You must move your cube to a different Law at the start of your turn if you can
  • The effects only apply to the active player even if an opponent's cube is on the same Law
  • Laws can have effects that apply to any phase of the player's turn

Below is an example of a set of Laws that is quite simple and straightforward:

However, I think the design space can be fairly large and so you could have more complex effects:

The cards above are not necessarily fun, interesting or balanced; they're just examples that I came up with fairly quickly.  I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this!

You can find the card image generator template for Laws here.

You may decide to tweak any of the rules above; please just make sure it is clear in your submission which rule(s) you are tweaking.

Weekly Design Contest / Weekly Design Contest #133: A Time to Feast

WDC #133: A Time to Feast

As we're heading into the festive season with a number of celebrations just around the corner, let's take a moment to remember Feast from the first edition of Dominion.

  • Design a card-shaped thing that allows you to gain cards costing up to $5 (or more)
  • It should not be restricted to gaining specific $5-cost cards (so a card that can only gain Duchies for example would not qualify)
  • There should not be a restriction on the type of card gained (so for example, Advance, University, Haggler, and Jester would not qualify.  Likewise, Pilgrimage and Changeling would not qualify since you are limited to gaining playable cards)
  • It should be able to gain a $5-cost card without any cost reduction (the exception would be if the cost reduction is already provided by your submission)
  • It should not be a pure Remodeler (although self-trash like with Feast would be allowed). So Remodel, Transmogrify, Expand, and even Altar, would not qualify.
  • You can incorporate any fan mechanics (please just provide an explanation of how it works)
  • Official cards other than Feast that would qualify include Artisan, Smugglers, Border Village, Artificer, Duplicate, Vampire, Horn of Plenty, Charm, Banquet, Bargain, Way of the Butterfly
  • Stonemason would qualify due to its on-play ability rather than on-buy ability
  • I'll try to be flexible with the rules.
The deadline will be Sunday, November 7th at 11:59PM ET or 24 hours after I post the 24-hour notice (whichever comes later).

Weekly Design Contest / Weekly Design Contest #125: What's the Draw?
« on: August 13, 2021, 12:17:33 pm »
WDC #125: What's the Draw?

  • Design a card-shaped thing that draws a variable number of cards that is not a draw-to-X (where X is is fixed rather than variable) card
  • For the purposes of this week's contest, binary will not be considered to be "variable".  What I mean by that is that cards like Shanty Town (that draws either 0 or 2 cards), Menagerie (that draws 1 or 3 cards), or Conspirator (that draws either 0 or 1 card) would not qualify.
  • As mentioned above, draw-to-X cards like Library, Watchtower, and Cursed Village would not qualify because they draw up to a predetermined number of cards.  The exception would be a draw-to-X card like faust's Geographer, where the "X" is variable.
  • Your submission can be a non-supply card (in which case you should also submit a supply card or WELP which works with the non-supply card)
  • If your submission is a split pile, only one of the cards needs to meet the contest criteria
  • Your submission can be a WELP*
  • Please do not submit any Traveller lines or mixed piles
  • Official cards that would qualify include Crossroads, City Quarter, Madman, Shepherd, Storyteller, Seer, Scrying Pool, Apprentice, and Tribute
  • Cards that let you draw a variable number of cards for a future turn will also be permitted.  So Research, for example, would qualify.
The deadline will be Friday, August 20th at 11:59PM ETSaturday, August 21st at 9AM ET.  I will judge over the weekend and aim to post results on Sunday, August 22nd.  It is possible that I will only post the winner and runners-up so that the next contest can start and will provide detailed feedback on the remaining entries later in the week.

For Week 13, we will be exploring Edicts!

Edicts are landscape-shaped cards that introduce straight-up rule changes.  Unlike Events and Projects they don't need to be bought, and apply to all players.  They are similar to Landmarks, but in order to ensure that they could not be a Landmark instead, one of the rules this week will be that Edicts should not be tied to VP-scoring.

FYI, some Secret History on Landmarks:
Quote from: Donald X.
You could just make cards that modify the rules. I considered it way back when; it's a thing I've done in many games. I didn't do it because Dominion has kingdom cards filling that rule; they change the rules plenty. Dominion doesn't need other rules-changing cards. I considered it again later and still didn't want them. But I do have Events and now Landmarks. Events can change the rules, but only via the Event-buying mechanism, which is like buying a card without the card; it felt like a reasonable extension. Landmarks can change the rules, but only in these VP-making ways. While they are each a step towards just having randomizer cards that change the rules, they still both try hard to stay within limits, to only affect the game in a way best done via these mechanisms. In general the best way to change the rules in Dominion is still to have kingdom cards that do different things.

It's a simple enough concept, but I think the tricky part will be coming up with an Edict that wouldn't be better off as an Event or Project, and to come up with something that is subtle enough to maintain the essence of Dominion but meaningful enough to offer a fun and varied gameplay experience.

Judgement will be based on balance, uniqueness, and fun.

I will set the deadline for submissions at 11:59PM UTC on June 23rd.

Weekly Design Contest / Weekly Design Contest #113: Power Up!
« on: April 28, 2021, 06:15:12 pm »
WDC #113: Power Up!

  • Design a card that becomes more powerful once a specific trigger (or triggers) is met
  • Official cards that would qualify include City, Paddock, Trade Route, and Forager
  • The activation should be irreversible in most cases (I'll allow for rare exceptions, as is possible with City and Paddock when either Ambassador or Way of the Butterfly is present, or with Forager if there are cards that let you gain from the trash) and not based on transient conditions.  Therefore, cards like Menagerie, Leprechaun, Conspirator, and Shanty Town would not qualify
  • Likewise, cards that rely on the Journey token like Giant or Ranger would not qualify
  • The card should not be trashed or exchanged for a different card.  Therefore, cards like Magic Lamp or Travellers would not qualify.
  • All copies of the card should be activated for all players once the specific trigger is met.  Therefore, cards like Miser, Pirate Ship, Vineyards and Fairgrounds would not qualify.

Judging Criteria:
  • I will judge cards based on how innovative they are and whether they look fun to play with.
  • I will take balance into account as well, but it will be less important than the other two factors.

I look forward to seeing your entries and hope you have fun!

Deadline for new entries and revisions will be around 8PM Eastern Time / 12AM GMT on Wednesday, May 5th.
