In a Masq/Hunting Grounds-BM game I played yesterday against jog, he Masqed me his Hovel. This allowed me a few turns later, after playing a Hunting Grounds, to trash TWO Hovels with my Province buy.

Too bad Goko didn't save the log.

Had my most elegant game on goko just last night.  Hopefully drunken sailor updates and I can post the log.  Key kingdom cards are Remake, Highway, Library, Worker's Village, Village, Squire and Moat.

On turn 10 of this game I was able finish the game by Remaking Coppers into Worker's Village, draw them, play Squires for +Buy to obtain $7 and 12 Buys allowing me to buy out the remaining 6 $1-cost Worker's Village, 3 $0-cost Villages, 2 $0-cost Squires and a single Estate for a 1 - 0 win.

In which Qvist suffers catastrophic bad luck over the last four turns, causing me to tie from far behind with a vastly inferior (and outright bad due to greening) deck.

In those four turns, we have:
1a. Q is limited to a Duchy.
1b. I Counterfeit my Gold and sacrifice a Silver to pick up Farmland-Duchy.
2a. Q is limited to an Estate.
2b. I'm able to get a Farmland and turn my Remake into a new Gold, shuffling my deck.
3a. He Ghost Ships me, allowing me to leave one Silver for next turn while I Haven the other, and is limited to an Estate again.
3b. I have the Haven I need, a treasure to Haven, and the two useless Provinces to leave behind. All of these things are essential.
4a. He Council Rooms, allowing me to draw an extra card (which I need), and is limited to another Estate.
4b. I draw my Gold, my Counterfeit, both my Silver, and my Black Market (I only actually need two of the last three, since I can Farmland my Farmland if I don't have all three). I buy Province-Duchy to tie.

In which my opponent builds an unstoppable engine and possesses me every turn and am still able to an incredibly lucky comeback because
* there was only one buy
* he only bought one Possession
* he played a Vault before possessing me

I tried to get 2 Possessions and was able to play them, pile the Vaults and buy 2 Provinces for the win.
amalloy pointed out that in the single Possession turn I could have better (or worse) seeded his next hand, so I was totally lucky there.
I was so close in resigning, but managed to still win this. Never give up!

In an Hunting Party - Ambassador game with no +buy other than powered-up Cities, it felt like a bit of a waste to spend $5 on a Curse.

So instead I bought an IGG (cursing my opponent right away) and Ambassadored the IGG back during the next turn, thus "cursing" him again with an additional unique and gaining for myself the Curse I had wanted in the first place.

Have you played the Bishop/Fortress golden deck before?  I'd guess not because you hardly utilized the combo.  Here's the link to the wiki article because I'm lazy.

Didn't know about the golden deck, but that is why I bought the pair, I saw they'd work well together. At the same time, I bought the watchtower so I could grab a gold when I trashed it...only afterwards realizing that I mixed it up with another card.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't sarcasm. At least it shouldn't be.

It takes a Lord Bottington's to pursue such a naïve strategy, then luck out with a turn 5 Treasure Map pairing. As long as the bot didn't continue to buy Treasure Maps, it should have been all set to win.

Average money density equal to $1.72/card making an average of $8.6 per 5-card hand.  I'd say he's well on his way victory being able to Province probably 8 times in his next 10 hands.

Banker Bot clearly has some programming issues. Besides shooting himself in the foot by trashing nearly all of his treasure to Bishop, he misses a winning play on Turn 26, where he has $7 and Bishop but doesn't Bishop a green card and buy the last Province.

Once he's done that, he doesn't have enough cash to end the game, and you have essentially infinite time (and you use 22 turns of it). The game will keep going until he runs out the Copper, Estates, and Duchies/Silver. He's barely accruing points because he doesn't have $5 and there's only one Bishop in his deck.

I actually think it doesn't matter. That's a kingdom where you could pump vineyard up to a really right amount. Then again it's 3 players, so maybe not.

DSC and I slog through a 21-turn game with stupid Altar decks on a terrible board.

The board in question:
Candlestick Maker, Secret Chamber, Oasis, Shanty Town, Throne Room, Mine, Rogue, Venture, Adventurer, Altar

It's not instantly obvious that the entire board is terrible. Altar isn't useful because you don't want any of the $5s en masse (except possibly Venture). Rogue doesn't have the deck density to be really strong. Throne Room has mediocre targets. Oasis is a straight trap. Shanty Town is basically a Necropolis. CMs are easy to overbuy. So naturally, between us, we make literally all of those mistakes, prompting us to play the board again, restricted to Rogue-BM vs. Mine-BM.

Or tried to create a secret chamber/chancellor/scout/counting house combo. Discard your deck with chancellor, use counting house to get all coppers into hand, then scout to gather remaining greens and finally secret chamber to turn green into copper.

After losing both the Market and City split, due to peiling buying more engine parts instead of VP (only one Province), I managed to get just enough buys to buy a Province, an Estate, and the last seven Masquerades to end the game in my favour (the 2 Quarries helped to reduce the cost of Masquerade to $0).

Might not be a big deal for many of you, but yesterday I played and won against a 6K+ rated opponent for the first time.
Especially after having a bad dominion evening the day before (losing four out of five games) that totally made my day.
I'm also a bit proud that I didn't just mindlessly mirror his play but went for my own plan.
He played an Apothecary-Warehouse deck with Golem, Spy and Haggler as support while I went for a simpler BM with Counterfeit and a Haggler. I still like my plan better and was just to fast for him to catch up.

So... it seems I'll post the log when gokosalvager is back up.

So I just played an awesome hermit/madman/market square game... my opponent didn't know the combo so I got 9 of the hermits and got enough gold (and 7 of the market squares) so I could pile out the entire province pile.

I do love me a successful Hermit/MS combo.

I also don't have a log and am not going to get it, but I played a really interesting game with Hamlet, Armory, Herald, Treasure Map, and Baker. I saw the Hamlet-Armory-TM combo immediately, since I'd done it before, so I opened double Armory as opposed to double TM. It wasn't until I was actually performing the combo and getting 12$ with no extra buys that I saw the synergy with Herald. I could essentially set up the next two turns with the amount of money I had, doing the exact same thing again. 1 Hamlet and 2 Armories for first turn, then 1 Hamlet and 1 Armory (to top-deck a Hamlet) for the TM turn, and random Coppers and Estates to account for the five-card hands. Result: drawing Hamlet with my four Golds, guaranteeing me an extra buy.

I didn't win the game, since Baker ironically enabled some fast Provinces for my opponent, but I still thought it was cool.

Another game which I was all behind in VPs but the end. I was at a huge disadvantageous position because my opponent reached 8 much sooner than me and purchased 2 goons with stonemason along with many hamlets and stables. A single colony turned the game to my victory at the last turn with the only platinum.

Any suggestion for me is greatly pleased. I think I played this game badly and there should be a better solution...

He opens 5-2, I open 3-4. 5-2 is just miles and miles better here. By the end of turn 6 the deckstates are:

kfm: 1 wharf, 8 Fool's Golds, 7 copper, 3 estates. liopoil: 1 wharf, 2 Fool's Golds, 2 Foragers (no treasures in trash yet), 7 coppers, and one each of silver, quarry, and estate. However, city is on the board! My deck is two estates and 6 fool's golds thinner (and also has two foragers for more trashing), so I can easily pivot my deck, and win the city split 6-4. I also trash my treasures, powering forager up to $4, and getting a couple more foragers. Turns 12, 13, and 14 I easily draw my deck and get all of my money from 6 cities, and my 4 foragers. I am guaranteed to be able to draw my whole deck each of those turns except the last, but it is still exceedingly likely on the last. I got all my money from those 6 cities, and my foragers which were worth 4 apiece because of quarry, silver, and FG. He resigns before I can get the last two provinces on my last turn. I think you can't go pure FG here, and in fact 8 FGs were probably actually too many for him (what? too many Fool's Golds??!?!) because they power up cities and they stop the engine from building. I really liked this game because I really don't like Fool's Gold because it makes otherwise interesting game boring (sort of like rebuild, but with rebuild there are more often tough choices), so it felt good to beat it here.

I have never bought more from a black market than here. All the cards came so good together. Cities for actions (and draw) and then so many action money cards: Mandarin to put a card back on top, Mystic to draw it back, Grand market, Merchant ship, ... Everything wonderful with the plentyful actions from cities. In addition a single knight for me to keep my opponent down and a single rats to get rid of the coppers. Amazing game:

A game from a few days ago. Turn 1, I bought a Silver. Turn 2, I no longer had the Silver; it fell to my opponent's Noble Brigand. That was basically game over.

It was a 1/6 shot: 1/2 that my opponent would start with 4+ coins, and 1/3 that the Noble Brigand would hit the Silver. Unlucky, but completely avoidable; I should've opened Develop or Native Village.

If I were you I don't skip Moat. That is just your bad luck I think. In normal situation Moat should be able to block a single or two Mountebanks, that's 2-4 junk less

Moat is a fairly bad card overall but occasionally it is a must-buy. In this case with no trashing it is a must or you'll lose a curse split and that's the trouble. The presence of good trashing for curse, card drawing for discard attacks, etc reduces the importance of Moat IMO.

Moat is significantly better with more players in the game due to the higher chance that it will block at least one attack each time you draw it.  Just having a curser and no trasher in a two-player game probably isn't reason enough to buy it, because: (1) You can mildly lose the curse split (take 6 of them) and still win the game, and (2) if the alternative is buying nothing, Moat makes you play your own attack less often; depending on shuffle luck that may "make up for" any junking you prevent with Moat, and the split could still end up even, or worse.  I don't have numbers to back that up but if someone who's handy with the sims wants to set it up, I'd be interested in seeing who wins the Curse split and/or the game on something like 5/2 openings, Witch/- vs Witch/Moat, followed by BM. 

I guess I wouldn't buy Moat mainly for the reaction in a two-player game, but it's also an action that increases your hand-size by as much as Courtyard.  I'm not saying it's as good as Courtyard, of course, but on a board with otherwise good components, i.e. strong trashing and villages, it can enable the engine.  Getting my BM beaten by Moat-fueled engines hasn't happened to me that often, but it's happened enough that I try not to overlook Moat as a cheap draw card any more. 

Edit: Here is a good example.  Maybe I made mistakes playing my strategy or maybe it was just wrong, but my opponent takes care of business with Minstrel, Moat, Ironworks and Bishop.  No attacks on the board, Moat is just a good enough draw card for that super-thin engine.

halfway through I was really doubting my choice of strategy "why do you always get sucked in by rats, liopoil???". That comeback felt really good though, and I only barely had enough on that last turn.

Actually, I'm not sure rats is a good idea here, but it helps with action density for throne room (except you don't want to throne rats... nevermind). My early-game play was pretty poor I think. So far behind, no extra buys in my deck (hadn't hit Grand Market), piles low, the good Tournament prizes gone, surely I'd lost right? Nope, drawing my deck with a crazy hermit/madman thing and using tournament plus the same 2 provinces to gain 5 duchies, and win the game on piles by 2 points. Honestly, a crazy comeback, love the graph at the end of this.

Rebuild on the board, I open 4/3 against a 5/2. So, probably gonna lose. I open Marauder/Silver instead of double Silver, hoping to slow down his Rebuilding. This turned out to be a bad idea, as it hurt my economy (I could have bought a Rebuild on T3 otherwise).
But his Duchess (his $2) allowed me to discard an Estate, and get a lucky T4 hand of 5 Copper, giving me a chance for a comeback. 

I won in the end. Somehow I won the duchy split, and also managed to spike a Province buy.

and it helps him too, just as much on average, so in reality he had silver/rebuild vs silver/marauder, which is a big advantage

i thought about it a bit during the game but i disagreed. i can't find the log but i believe i had just shuffled and had two turns before reshuffling again. i figured i still had a decent chance of hitting at least 1 wharf before the next shuffle, so to me the province was better than the extra wharf. if i had passed then at best my first province could have come turn 10. either way its a bit of a suboptimal situation, of course.

I was building a madman deck in a 4 player game and had bought no victory points while everyone else was steadily gaining provinces til there were only 3 left (one person had 4). I set off my madman chain with one hermit still left in my deck thinking, if I don't do it now I'll never do it and of course it was that one hermit which allowed me (having bought the remaining 3 provinces and a duchy) to trash a hunting grounds for another duchy and gain an estate to win by one point!

I make two huge errors: buying Taxman on T2 when Sir Martin was the top Knight and only source of +buy, then misclick Silver instead of Copper with my Doctor on T3.  After my opponent trashes my Taxman w/his Knight on T3, I very nearly resign.  I soldier on, and my luck gets worse: my opponent trashes my only Silver on T6; my first Knight catches Knight on T8.  He continues to trash my stuff while my Knights catch nothing or a Knight. With my Doctor trashing Copper and his Knights taking care of everything else I am down to a 7 card deck at T16:

1   Dame Anna
1   Doctor
2   Plaza
2   Copper
2   Silver
1   Estate

He has 4 Knights of 19 cards.  With a little skill and a lot of luck, a Hail Mary play pays:
T16: Anna trashes Doctor+Estate and lives. 
T17: Anna trashes Copper, lives, and I use 2 coin tokens for a Gold; down to 6 cards
A Knight takes a Silver and I'm down to 5 cards
T18: Anna lives again and more tokens for 2nd gold
Knight whiffs (Copper is only card not in hand)
T19: Anna lives, pick up 3rd Gold
Knights gets Silver - good I didn't want that slowing down my Gold anyway
T20: Anna trashes Copper and dies, I get a Province; This is actually lucky because it means I have only 5 cards so no chance of losing a Gold before I get a 2nd Province
T21: I luckily have Plaza as the 1 card not in hand, and its trashed - good riddens
T22: Province is the 1 card not in hand, Knight whiffs; get 4th Province, but still unlikely to win (he has 2P+Duchy and once he hits a Gold I can do little, and its getting hard to line up 3 Gold now)
T23: draw 4P+Gold, he doesn't have a Knight in hand!
T24: draw 3G+new Silver or 5th Province - I may actually have a chance to hang on!
T25: No attack with 2 Gold vulnerable
T26: I get a Duchy, expecting it to be trashed but at least it takes VP off the board; Knight catches 2P
T27: Another Duchy, no attack
T28: Can only buy Silver, he mistakenly buys last Province to lose by 5 - I was favored if it went on, but it wasn't given his ability to destroy by Duchy VP.

So after 15 turns of terrible luck, I get 10 straight that I couldn't have made better if I rigged the deck and win.  Dominion can be a crazy game sometimes.

I'll have to keep that in mind. Usually I just try to curse them even if they can trash them easily...

I don't think it's always the right choice - Forge is a weird case because it can trash lots of cards at once, which lets you turn your deck from fat to slim very quickly. It's also expensive enough that you might be too far behind to get a big forge hand in the first place.

Very generally, trashing is excellent, cursing is also excellent, and your goal is to get a thin deck that can play a curser every turn. When you actually pick up the curser is the hard call, but in a draw-your-deck engine you usually want cycling first.

By "I don't think it's always", I meant "I would be surprised if skipping the curser until you get forge was right >= 50% of the time". Which I should have made clearer. Many cursers give you reasonable economy, besides Sea Hag, and my intuition is that the cursing slowdown offsets the better economy card you could have bought instead.

It's hard to tell from the log, but I finally checked off an item on my dominion bucket list with my favorite card: watchtower. I emptied the curse pile throughout the game with extra buys using watchtower and won because of it.

The most PPR-related tension I have ever been involved in. After my opponent saw through my standard "I'm not trashing my estates so I can win on a 4/4 province split" tactic, the game started heating up. We drained the duchies so fast that I couldn't keep count of VPs and I was holding my breath throughout my entire last turn.

I go for a Black Market deck, seeing lots of enablers here.  My opponent pretty much goes for straight Fool's Gold, later getting nonsensical Grand Markets.  He amasses a hefty Province lead, commenting at one point that my Margraves are helping him line up FG.  I think I'm toast until the final few turns where my deck starts getting scary thanks to Vault.  During one of my big turns, he slowrolls me a bit, waiting almost a full 5 minutes before discarding to Margrave.  I make a bad misplay or two, and still think I'm out, then get the incredible final turn of the game seen in the log.  Afterwards, he cusses me out and leaves the game and I block him.

With scheme, black market, vault, a village, and tactician that's pretty clearly a double-tac deck.  I was thinking using GMs to make it work but they're not that wildly easy to obtain on that board.  Should be possible to get that to reliably double or even triple province every turn, fairly quickly especially if you're lucky enough to swing a 5/2.

Of course, the contents of the BM will be very important.

Crazy game. Scavenger+herald is a super awesome combo, especially with support like it had here. No trashing or draw, but I could still play my best cards pretty much every turn by messing with the top of my deck.

Turn 15 and 13 I over payed herald by two to put scavenger and TR on the deck to avoid having to go through an awful shuffle that I triggered for myself. T12 I set up the top 6 cards of my deck, T14 the top 8. With some luck I eventually managed to get 5 highways in play with squires for buys to win, just in time because piles were running.

I dug myself into a deep pit today by opening Spy while my opponent opened Smithy and proceeded to buy two Witches. They then proceeded to seriously curse me and empty out the Labs trying to get a mega engine. I was about to resign BUT THEN I saw that two piles were gone and the Cellars were close to out, plus I grabbed an early game Province while I had the chance before. Evidently my opponent either didn't notice me only buying Cellars or they thought that missing Province was theirs but I managed to slip past their engine building and snag the win. And that is why you watch the piles, kids.

(Seriously, they had enough money/buys per turn that they could easily have had at least one Province/Cellar turn and screwed me over. I was actually whispering "don't buy a Province, don't by a Province" whenever it was their turn.)

These posts can be reconciled by the following observation: many games when you start with a 5/2 split, you make only one purchase and buy nothing on the $2 hand.  In your next shuffle the chance that the single card purchased is on the bottom is 1/11, which is much higher than the 1/66 chance if you purchase 2 cards. Therefore, two 5/2 splits is likely to be substantially more common than the 1 in 2376 calculation suggests.

Edit: in addition, the exact situation where you get a 5/2, purchase two cards, and get another 5/2 is even rarer than 1 in 2376 games because in many of the 5/2 openings, you only purchase a card on the $5 hand.

The way the statement was phrased it is clear that the probability is given you made two purchases. And still, when you only get one card the odds are still 1/396, which is still quite small. No, I think it's just that you remember when you have weird shuffle more than when you get normal ones.

I keep getting stuck with 5 & 2 hands on a board where Urchin is crucial, while my opponent gets Mercenary on T3 despite only buying one Urchin. When a finally get Urchin, out gets Swindled away just as about to collide. I say something like "as if my luck wasn't bad enough already" and he says something about how or ran out after my 5 opening. Um, no. Opening 5 was terrible here.

I have never posted any of my games on this thread before. However, there was a Mountebank game I was losing hard. On one turn, I overpay Doctor for 14 coins. I then go on to tie the game. Please note, I accidentally trashed an estate when I overpayed with my doctor. Although, after I overpay for the doctor, I do lots of crazy stuff as well. My opponent was blown away by the game as well.

Yesterday I had a hand in which after playing a few engine cards I ended up with just 6 colonies in my hand.  Not so much as a copper, just 60 VP in green for a completely dead turn.  Kind of a first-world problem

In another game I had 3 KCs in my deck and my opponent had just bought his 1st, so it seemed I was ahead.  Then I drew KC-KC-KC-Copper-Spoils.. and eventually lost.

Yeah, given the speed with which the Caravans ran out, there's something to be said for not bothering with trashing.

I made some mistakes early on that lead to me losing the ambassador war but somehow I manage to get four platinums and five golds and win despite having 10 estates and four curses in my deck at the end (and 5 throne rooms). I'm not really sure what my plan here was but I guess it sort of worked. Also, my deck was 55 cards and I had exactly 1 point per card which is pretty cool.

I severely misplayed this game.  I didn't track the amount of money in my deck so I couldn't build economy right away after thinning out; I sent an ambassador to you when I should've kept both and bought a curse earlier; and I didn't get the draw cards soon enough to start drawing my deck and really pouring it on with ambassador.  So that would be the "somehow"  

Also, it's kind of surprising how much it matters whether you send Estates or Copper first with Ambassador mirrors.  I think it's almost always right in the first few turns to send the thing you have two copies of, but that can be painful if you end up with a deck too full of estates to buy much.

yes. it mostly depends on which 5$'s are in the kingdom. if, for example, stables is there, you should almost always return one estate, because the extra economy is worth having more cards. You will hit 5$ a lot, buy stables, cycle through your deck, and win. if the only 5$'s are things like merchant ship, then return 2 coppers. having a lot of economy isn't going to do much for you, your opponent is just going to have a small deck and will crush you, because you can't utilize your economy. basically, the key thing is whether or not the 5$'s are going to help you with the amb war in the long run.

I think returning estates is correct in about half of all games, so it's not an edge case.

That can be attached to any advice! But sending 2 over 1 is a good rule of thumb, like trashing all starting cards in your hand with Chapel. If you think it's not uncommon for sending 1 Estate to be better, can you elaborate on when/how that is?

yes. it mostly depends on which 5$'s are in the kingdom. if, for example, stables is there, you should almost always return one estate, because the extra economy is worth having more cards. You will hit 5$ a lot, buy stables, cycle through your deck, and win. if the only 5$'s are things like merchant ship, then return 2 coppers. having a lot of economy isn't going to do much for you, your opponent is just going to have a small deck and will crush you, because you can't utilize your economy. basically, the key thing is whether or not the 5$'s are going to help you with the amb war in the long run.

I think returning estates is correct in about half of all games, so it's not an edge case.

I still think it is more of an edge case.  Stables is a great example of when returning the Estate is better, because Stables makes Copper much less junky and it gives excellent cycling, letting you play Ambassador more often.  But I think most boards will still favour returning 2 cards over 1, at least for the early game.

If you feel adamant about it, I think this would be an excellent article topic.  The two Ambassador articles both favour returning 2 Copper over 1 Estate.  The first article by theory (2010) unequivocally states that "Ambassadoring 2 Coppers (rather than 1 Estate) is the best play".  The second article by WanderingWinder (2013) devotes an entire section to the question.  The answer is still "usually 2 Copper over 1 Estate" but WW does talk about what situations would warrant returning the single Estate instead.  They are exceptions rather than the rule though.

Until now, I hadn't seen any advice contrary to this (at least from prominent players).  So if you feel it goes 50/50 over all games, I (and probably the community) would be really interested in seeing your thoughts on it.

The cleanest example I've had in a while where you want Rats without other trashing. Scrying Pool, Scheme, Secret Chamber, Rats.

I had an empty draw/discard pile (except for a Rats) part way through turn 8 so I could play Rats, gain Rats, draw Rats. Goodbye remaining Coppers!

Something happened today where my screen blacked out and when it came back ALL MY CARDS WERE INVISIBLE. I could still see the green/red/yellow outlines on the cards but I couldn't see what they actually were, so I literally guessed my way through the rest of the game. Luckily it was a big money game so what I clicked didn't make too much difference, and I actually ended up winning because I already had a lead on both Colonies and Platinums. But still!

I unfortunately didn't get a screencap because my opponent quit from me being "too slow" (well excuuuuuse me if I can't even see what cards I'm playing) but in the next game there was some residual invisibility left over on the Estates...

Residual invisibility is very hard to get rid of.  Scrubbing with coal will usually work, and blood is effective if potentially disturbing.

Invisible cards happened to me once too except I was playing some sort of engine with hamlets so yeah. Surprisingly i managed to keep the engine going for a while (either by luck or by remembering the positions of some of the cards) before it just went completely blank and I couldn't finish the game unfortunately.

Hamlets are one of the best cards to play with invisibly.  You're going to be discarding things accidentally anyway; better that they're random cards than good ones.

Pretty sure Witch is better.  Curses keep you from connecting Fool's Gold, you want to put them in his deck so they don't wind up in yours.  Maybe get a Margrave later when the Curses are almost gone.

You forget, that Scout is more than a good counter. As you want to win, you need to get points early and Scout draws them, so that you have bigger hands, which will lead to a win.
This is a bit like winning with a huge engine of Villages. I'm not sure, if therefore the Villages are better. But I think Scout is still better, because you can't buy Village if it is not in the setup. So this is a huge disadvantage for the play with Village.

Bureaucrat is clearly better. Not only does it attack your opponents by putting a useless card atop their deck, but it gives you a free silver that you are guaranteed to pick up in your next draw. The combination of these two things makes the Bureaucrat a valuable card in Dominion. Buying Bureaucrat as soon as possible is almost always the correct play. It even guarantees at least $2 of buying power for the next turn!

Not far behind of Bureaucrat is Explorer. It doesn't have the attack, but the Silver you gain from it goes into your hand so that you can use it on the same turn. If that wasn't enough, you can gain a Gold instead, into your hand, if you have a Province in hand. With a Scrying Pool engine, I bought Mandarin out of Black Market, putting 5 Golds and Cache back on top of deck, and then re-drew them and played them again, and played Mandarin as well. Mandarin payed for itself and gave $16 extra!

Used other cantrips that were drawn with Scrying Pool. It was against a bot so my quality of play did not need to be that high because bots do not know how to use Scrying Pool or Black Market and let you build huge engines by not seriously contesting components :-).

I saw Chapel/Market/Lab/VillSmith and decided to get a super thin Province-a-turn deck, while she (I'm just going to say "she" and hope I'm right) went for a Woodcutter/Gardens slogrush. It was going smoothly for me until around turn 17 when she spotted my strategy working better and dove into the main three VP piles to boost her score and her Gardening power, while I had a misclick moment and grabbed one of the Gardens for myself to weaken hers. We then went into a full-on "who can buy the most VP" battle until the Gardens and Estates both ran out and the Village pile was on the edge. I still had the lead and I wanted to get the last few Villages out of the way because it was only a matter of time before her Gardens leveled up and surpassed my Province lead... but of course she noticed this too and did everything she could not to empty the pile. It got to the point where she had completely closed the gap between our scores with Gardens and VP buys, but thankfully I both was P2 and had enough money to buy the last Village so I ended the game, expecting to compromise at a tie and get some rating points from beating a higher-ranked player. What I did not expect was my ONE Gardens miraculously leveling up at the last minute and granting me a one point victory!! I even got an "oh wow" from SophiesWorld in the chat afterwards.

Sometimes it's all about the stoppers.

(I thought I remembered her style of play from somewhere! I looked our game history up on Salvager and it turns out that this "oops, she's catching on" thing happened once before and I barely managed a tie. She's L25 on the Iso leaderboard and I'm L10 right now so I feel pretty proud of myself.)

I did play a few test games and was able to get all 8 provinces in 17-20 turns.  It's actually a pretty fast engine for base only.  Don't be too scared of the Gardens player's early lead.  They'll have 3- or maybe 4-point Gardens by the end of the game, and it can take them a bit longer to end the game with Woodcutter than Workshop, giving you a chance to overtake with Provinces.  From there, you have the better deck. 

Often if you're playing an engine against big money or a pile rush, you should expect to fall behind and plan to catch up and win later.  Don't worry about that; engines are supposed to start greening later.  You usually don't want to cut your planned build short because of the scoreboard.  If you lose, well, maybe you didn't build the engine quite right, or maybe the engine just wasn't quite as good as you thought.  But on this board I think you were right to want the engine.

Yeah, double Province turns against a slog player is good. The slog player wins the long game, so you need to empty the Provinces very fast, and the slog player isn't going to buy a single Province so you're guaranteed to be rewarded for your more powerful deck. Also, don't buy Gardens when you could have bought a Province, because that makes the game longer which works out in the slog player's favor.

So the thing about that game is, you should build the engine forever. Draining the gardens isn't really a big deal if they can't end the game. And they can't. So you build forever and eventually go for at least 2 provinces per turn, and you ought to win pretty easily. They'll need at least 20 turns or so (probably closer to 25) to get enough VP to overcome 8 provinces, and even if it goes that long, you just get some gardens or duchies yourself (at the end!) and really should be very very fine. Woodcutter/gardens isn't really a thing.

I don't think I really agree that the Gardens player has the long-term advantage; their deck just gets worse and worse. Obviously with enough time, they will build up enough points to be insurmountable. But that takes so very long that it's just not realistic.


In general, I find this to be one of the biggest problems of newer players building engines: they panic about being behind and green too early.

Okay, not a pin, but I had an engine that would play pillage every turn to ensure he could not buy a province each turn to give me enough time to catch up and win. And it would have worked too, if I had simply stopped him from getting apprentice...

turn 17: I discard his throne room instead of apprentice. He apprentices the province and goes on to double province. If I discard the apprentice, he has to throne oracle and at best gets a single province. This is bad, but I still have complete control over the game.

turn 19: He has a bad hand with only 2 coins and two fortresses. I discard a fortress (the right call) and play 3 oracles, surely I can prevent him from drawing his apprentice, right? The first time I see copper-pawn. If I put it back he can't do anything, but he can get a pawn in his next hand and I'd rather he didn't have that, so I decide to discard it... stupid, right? It gets worse. The next play I see silver-pawn, and use the same reasoning and discard again! Now I'm asking for it, but with the third play of oracle I see copper-throne room. If I just put this back I still have the game in hand easily. No, I discard without thinking, and suddenly his fortress can draw absolutely anything and I have to pray it isn't apprentice.
