Does anyone know the name of this game?

I played a game about 5 years ago; pretty sure it would be classified as a Euro game. You have a player mat made by putting a few tiles together, I think a 2x2 square of square tiles. Each tile has a grid on it, I think it's a 6x6 grid or so.

On your turn, you take small cubes and place them on your board; 1 cube per grid space. You can place up to 2 cubes on a turn as long as the 2 cubes are adjacent to each other. There might be 2 or 3 different color cubes you can choose to place, I can't remember for sure. The object is to end up with the most coverage or to cover specific areas, something like that.

Ring any bells?

Nope. Thanks though. I'm sure you couldn't ever stack the cubes. And the boards definitely didn't have any kind of roads or whatnot on them.

If you're sure about the grid size, you could try this list.

Hey, maybe someone can help me identify a game too.

It is a mystery game.  There is some sort of crime and you are all detectives trying to work out who the bad guy is.  You travel around a board collecting clues, sometimes swapping with other players who you encounter.

The thing that actually struck me the most about the game was the movement system.  Instead of dice rolling, you get four(?) tokens with the numbers 1-4 on them.  On your turn, you flip a token to move up to that many spaces.  You have to flip all four, then you can unflip them all and reuse them.

The copy that I played was not in English.  It was Finnish, Swedish or German (can't remember which).

I don't know which game you mean. Here is a list of Deduction games: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamecategory/1039/deduction

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/139050/agentin-salaiset-paperit perhaps?

No, everyone in this game was a detective, I think.

Um, there were also subways or buses or something that would let you traverse the board more quickly.

Scotland Yard?

When I was trying to figure this out on my own, Scotland Yard was one of the ones I checked.  I don't think it's the one though.  The movement is different, and I'm pretty sure nobody was playing a criminal.

Uhh, so, the way that the mystery was set up was interesting too.  Something like:

There are a bunch of different suspect characters.  They each have some number of tokens which act as clues.  Some of the tokens are removed from the game, others are distributed around the city.  By collecting them, players gain info.  When you meet another player on the board, you can exchange tokens to gain more information.

I can't remember the exact mechanic though.  Not sure whether the removed tokens made a suspect more or less likely to be guilty.  But I think it was set up such that it was possible to eliminate suspects and determine exactly who the culprit was.

Now I'm intrigued. I'm seeing elements from Android, Scotland Yard, Mystery of the Abbey, and Clue.

If you find out, do let us know. I'm curious about this game.

I'm having a tough time remembering how the clue/alibi stuff worked from just reading the English translation, but it was pretty clever.  I didn't figure out how to make sense of the clues until halfway through the game when it clicked (and again, I don't remember how it worked now).  I ended up figuring it out too late to actually win, I think.

If only I had noticed the thread earlier; I would've known it right away.

I probably shouldn't be saying this, considering that I know the designer and everything, but the game is not really that good, at least not for gamers. One year we had that game as part of the qualification for Europe Masters, and it is fairly broken at least as a competitive game. Due to the final scoring system, a fairly good strategy is not based on figuring out all of the clues but instead getting 1-2 (out of 3) of the categories right and then making a guess. If you know two and you reveal your guesses, you are guaranteed at least the 2nd position and have fairly good chance of winning (especially if the guess is not completely random; if you have more than 50% chance of guessing the last one then someone else probably has too, and hence you must run to the finish to maximize your odds). Given that you can (at least almost) know one of the categories right from the start and can attempt to figure out a second after a few questions, there will typically be at least someone who goes for such a quick finish. And once they are gone, there are even less opportunities for the other players to ask questions. In the end, you might go though the game asking or answering only a few isolated questions -- not much of a deduction game then.

I agree that the movement mechanic is decent, but the rest of the game is not. As a family game it could work, but it might be a bit too complex for that; figuring out the clues is somewhat non-trivial, like you pointed out.
