Whoops, I got the timing wrong on when I plunder. Thought it was at the beginning of my turn when in a town. Qvist, is it too late to change that? (Basically, -1 Rep, +2 Cards?)

Can I play Mana Storm with a Black Die for it's secondary effect? Gotta go reread Night Time Mana usage.

Black Mana is mainly for the strong spell effects. You can't use it for any color like gold mana.
So: No, you need white mana for that.

Alright, let's try this:

Play:

Concentration: Gain a blue, white or red mana token. /// When you play this, play another Action card with it. Get the stronger effect of that card for free.
- Gain a White Token

Mana Storm: Choose a mana die in the Source that is showing a basic color. Gain a crystal of that color to your Inventory, then immediately reroll that die and return it to the Source. /// Reroll all dice in the Source. You can use three extra dice from the Source, and you can use dice showing black or gold as mana of any basic color, regardless of the Round.

- Use White Token for Secondary Effect

I thought there was a way to burn towns down? Maybe I misremembered. It's been a long time since my last turn. :P

Oh well, if not, I'll Pillage the place again. My deck is full compared to my fellow adventurers, and if I don't get through it some way or another, it'll go to waste. So Pillage and End Turn. (And yes, I suppose I spent a few cards that I didn't need to - but I thought I could burn down the town. Oh well, that's ok. I draw more now.)

You get to draw up to your max handsize before having to commit to the decision of whether to pillage.  But sometimes you just know you're going to want to so it's a good shortcut there.

You can't burn down villages.  You can burn down Monasteries, fighting a monster and stealing a relic and getting massive reputation loss.

Can we disband this game so I don't feel like I need to check the forum to maintain my responsibility in a game no one else is playing actively?  I was excited about Mage Knights, but no one else seems to be.  The turn intervals are just way too long

I was! I took my turns relatively promptly! But you're right that it's just dragging at what becomes an unmemorable pace... That is, it's very difficult to even remember what is happening at any given time.

Yeah, may have to declare this game dead.

I wasn't really getting into it as much as I hoped. I love Vlaada games, so I had hopes. It may be that the rulebook is especially crunchy, and I don't really have the time to learn games that crunchy via PBF; I keep going back to the rulebook, and I'm not always at a spot where I can conveniently look at the rulebook. I may do better with someone's physical copy.

The rulebook makes the game seem a lot more complicated than it is. Its really a simple game though it probably is easier to have a sit down and play through the tutorial campaign to learn the rules because then you go, "Oh the rulebook has 2 pages explaining combat but its essentially block all of the attack or take damage, attack more than its defense or dont kill it"

That's true; the actual mechanics aren't too bad. My main problem with the rulebook is that I had to keep going back to it to identify the counters. This would most certainly not be a problem IRL because I could point at a counter and say, "What's that?" After it's explained to me or I read it myself, I don't have to ask again—probably for the rest of the game. In PBF, however, I found myself asking "What's that?" about the same counter several times. Mostly, it's a combination of not being familiar with the game and having a long time between turns so that I would forget what I learned on my turn. If I were a more experienced player, this wouldn't be an issue.

I found Terra Mystica to be a much grindier rulebook.  But both games were well worth the effort

Re: Mage Knight II "Exploring in the dark" (Night 1, Turn 3, Galzria's turn)
« Reply #373 on: October 25, 2013, 12:08:09 am »

So, finally I apologize for abandoning this game.

Mage Knight is a really fun game and I think it works great as PBF as the first playthrough shows, but I agree: If you're new to the game and have to wait a while for your turn this takes away a lot of the fun. I also agree with pops that Terra Mystica has much griendier rules. Despite being very complicated the rules in Mage Knight make a lot of sense (for me at least). There are some minor things that you may forget easily or have to lookup a couple of times. But after one whole playthrough this game doesn't feel so complicated anymore. It's just the amount of things to take into account that seem overwhelming at first.

So, I might (re-)start this game, but not in the next couple weeks, maybe in 1-2 months if there's still interest.
