So after our first game at http://www.boiteajeux.net/index.php, Qvist, Kuildeous and me wanna play again.
Is there a 4th player who wants to join us?
If not, I think we'll just start with 3 tomorrow.

Can we play with 5?

If not, you can have my spot eHalc. I made need to watch a game to get the hang of it first.

I'll just make two games. That way everyone can play, and I can even play twice.

Where's the other game link?  I think I might spectate that one.

Also, is there a log to see what other people have done with their turn, or do you have to figure it out based on their board?

I like how we're all sort of doing different things.  Watno has freaking all the mines.  Archetype is the only one who has invested in animals so far.  I am... uhh, kind of all over the place right now.

What are all the ways to get points?

- finishing areas
- finishing all of one colour
- brown buildings that give points
- yellow science things that give points
- animals
- selling goods

Anything else?  Is money worth points?

Should this thread be moved to the actual games forum?

Edit:

Money, unsold goods and every 2 workers are also worth 1VP, OK.

Does the phase affect what things are available?  I notice we haven't seen any 3-goods or chickens yet, but I think we've seen all the other goods and animals.

I didn't even know that there were chickens.

There's almost no reason for this thread to exist (barring post-game reflection) because we have that chatting thing. I don't think it matters what happens to the thread, but Non-Mafia games is probably the best place to do it.

I really like the game, but I can see that there is a lot of AP if there is no obvious move.

I noticed there were chickens when I looked into the other game today.  They were way behind us, but now they are like half a phase ahead of us. :P

For me, it's that there are so many things I want to do.  Last turn I considered playing my ship to get those two goods... but I decided I had to grab one of the other tiles first.  And then you took the goods!

Chickens!

So, question -- which science tile is better?  The one that gives you extra money for shipping, or the one that gives you money for getting workers?  I went with the latter because I already had an enhanced "get workers" action and thought the flexibility would be good (you can always take workers but you can't always ship).  But taking workers isn't a great way of getting points while shipping seems pretty good, so maybe it would have been better to enhance the more helpful action.

And there still isn't a pink goods tile.  Just luck of the draw?

Yeah, it's just luck of the draw. I think I'd prefer having 2 science tiles for the same action.

How much can we account for probability?  Like, since there are so many teal goods now, and we've already seen quite a few orange and brown, does that make them significantly less likely to appear in the future?  Since we haven't seen any pink goods yet, is it almost guaranteed that we'll see them in the next phases?  That is, how many extra tiles are there in the "bag"?

Awww yissss, I have created a city of bureaucracy.  Whatever else happens in this game, I feel like a winner.

Archetype pretty sneaky with those ships.

Anyone willing to discuss strategy?  When I build my next brown, how do I decide whether to build in the size 3 area or in the size 5?  Completing the former would be worth 6+phase points while the latter would be worth 15+phase points.  If I manage to complete everything by the end, then it is better to do the size 3 area first simply for the phase points.  But if I can't, then is it better to go for the 5?  With only four dice left in the round, there's almost no chance of completing the size 3 in this phase anyway.  The size 5 already has one tile in it, so it's about the same either way.  Probably doing the size 5 would be better?

Perhaps more general -- at what point is it no longer worth it to try to finish the smaller areas to get the phase points?  When is it best to transition into finishing the big areas for those big points?

I feel like I had a grip on the game first round, but I'm not so sure about this second round. Seems like not taking mines is finally catching up to me.

Knew about the big bonuses, but completely forgot about the small ones! I was wondering what the significance of putting certain buildings in certain areas was (well, besides having greater access to more spots).

Really like the ships. Cool mechanic and seems incredibly powerful if you can get far enough ahead.

You get points whenever you complete an area.  You get more points if the area is bigger, and also if you complete it in earlier phases.  There is also a big bonus for being the first player to finish all of one colour (so far, Watno got it for grey, I got it for dark green) and a smaller bonus for being second, I think.

You didn't really have a choice with those mines, I think?  Watno scooped the only one in the first round, then he scooped another two in the second round and I grabbed the last one.  And I just grabbed yet another in this round.  I don't think you ever had a chance.

I'm curious about first player advantage in this game.  Watno managed to grab some really great stuff -- all the mines and the +/-2 science tile.  I feel like I made a really good play in my first turn of the game, grabbing that Bank so that I could scoop the +4 workers science tile.  Man, if Watno had gotten that AND the +/-2, it would have been insane.

You're doing good too though.  If a couple of cow tiles show up, that field area is going to earn you TONS of points.

Which is something I'm banking on and is why I'm so trying to be first.

I think if I started ships earlier, I could have gotten a Mine. Though maybe it wouldn't have been the best play because I have enough goods and the ability to get goods that if I really want something from the black depot, I can just use those.

And thanks for the points help, I vaguely remember reading something like that in the rule book.

Interested in what Watno has to say, but maybe he's he kind of person that tends to keep his winning tactics to himself. ;)

It's probably too late for you to get into Mines.  Not many turns left to make them worth it.

Though there's a possibility, I don't think you have to fear Watno scooping the light green bonus tile from you.  And he has a good chance of getting the smaller bonus because I'm way behind on animals!  I was hoping to grab one or both sheep tiles, but Watno took them! :P

Watno, don't want to chat with us? :P  What about Qvist and Kuild?  How is your game going over there?

(Edit: holy smokes, how are your scores so high in that game?  We're in like the same phase now but Watno's score in that game is almost double my score in my game.  Is that because of the different boards?  Qvist's in particular looks like it has lots of tiny spaces that are easy to complete early.)

Arche, what time zone are you in?

I play rather intuitively, so I don't have that much to say.
Seating order is important, but you can ifluence with ships. Note that going last in the first round will help you go first in the second.

Whoa, wait, you are right.  For some reason I thought that game was ahead of ours.  Maybe because your score and Qvist's are so high there.  Wow.  :-[

Does Kuild still have a chance?  He has several large areas he could fill up, hm.

I thought about this a bit and I think large areas are quite bad. Even in phase 5, four one sized areas are worth more than one of size 4.

I thought about this a bit and I think large areas are quite bad. Even in phase 5, four one sized areas are worth more than one of size 4.

4 1-size = (1+2)*4 = 12 points
1 4-size = 10+2 = 12 points

so they are worth the same, right?

But even bigger ones are more efficient... like,

5 1-size = (1+2)*5 = 15 points
1 5-size = 15+2 = 17 points

But it really does seem like the early benefits are way better.  The best boards would have a good mix, right?  Lots of small areas for lots of early bonus points, then maybe one or two huge regions to fill up by the end.  Qvist's board looks like that, with that one big field in the middle.

Good game.  Watno, I was more worried about you than Arche.  Wasn't expecting you so far back either!

I think you guys let me have too many of the things I needed.  There were lots of times you both could have disrupted me heavily without hurting yourselves much, particularly in taking the second church in phase 2 and many of the City Halls.  I can't believe I got all six of them.  ;D

Watno, I know you got really unlucky in not getting any sheep in phase 5.  If my hens had been sheep instead, you would have taken it away.  I think it might have been better for you if you had tried to steal my chickens.

To clarify, I wasn't as worried about Arche because he didn't really have any end game points to speak of... but then he sped ahead on all those boats and got that large bonus tile.  I started worrying about that, which is why I went for the pigs instead of the yellow tile.  I had to pick one or the other.  The pigs were worth more overall points, but it meant ceding the yellow region to you.  If I went for the yellow, I would have fewer points but you would also have way less (because the pigs would only be 5 points to you instead of the 14 for completing yellow).  Arche was a threat too so I went for more points!

Great job eHalc!

I think I would have played this slightly different now that I understand the strategy. Focusing more on the buildings than those three knowledge tiles, and not making that misplay at the end.  ;D

There are some cool knowlege cards, but the only one I actually used was the Blue/Green free dice adjustment one... :P

Your unlimited of a kind of building in a City is surprisingly powerful, especially when you get the 4 points per X tiles too.

Oh man, I didn't realize that the mines would generate more things after the last phase.

@Watno, yeah, maybe your focus was split.  There were lots of times you could have scooped things I needed!

@Arche, you did good picking up all those cows though.  You should have tried to grab the animal knowledge tile that Watno got; not sure if you ever had the chance though.  The placement knowledge tiles you chose weren't so useful for you... for the green/yellow/grey one, you didn't get many of those tiles.  And the blue/light green one you got late when you had already placed most of your cows and ships!  Plus you really should have taken the Market and the Market knowledge tile in your first turn of the last phase.

I got super lucky though, both in all the Hens that came out as well as the crapton of City Halls that appeared.  What is the most you could possibly get of a single building?

For posterity, link.

Does anyone have a physical copy of this game who can answer my question about number of buildings possible?

Also, I think I want to get a physical copy of at least one Feld game.  CoB is now high on the list.  Wondering about how it compares to others.  But that deserves a thread of its own...
