Actually, although 41 wasn't his max, he just PMed me to say he wanted to see how you responded first. So, running him up might have gotten you the plant instead

Yes, of course.

And yeah, I was beginning to consider just letting you win it for more than you wanted to pay if you tried to outbid me. I'm already pretty behind, so taking a big risk seems like an okay plan to me.

Although this thing is one weakness of our CO system, I'd say.

I think there are 2 things at work here:
1. No body language makes it harder to judge how far to push things. (this is true regardless of the CO)
2. Feeling a bit more detached from the bidding when you just give a max-bid. (this is a factor of the CO bidding).

That said, feel free to make your bidding COs complicated if you think it will make a difference. (i.e. bid up to 50 or when there are only 2 players left bidding, then I'll decide what to do). Don't feel like you just have to lay down an unequivocal max bid.
