What game would you like to see a PBF of?
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:09:15 am »

So I enjoy playing games by forum, but I also really enjoy running them. I don't know why. Maybe it's being able to see what lots of different people are doing from an objective standpoint, or heck, maybe I just enjoy helping people (...to destroy one another...).

So now I'm going to make an offer. I'm going to open this thread up to suggestions of games from people, that they would like to play a game of via forum, and hopefully I'll pick one (or even more than one, who can tell) and try to run it via forum. Of course, sometimes this won't be possible - if I can't find a cards list, for example. It might turn out that well nobody really has a game they want, that's fine as well, just means we don't get a game. But I'm hopeful that there'll be a game suggestion from someone, which I can find a copy of the rules and any necessary materials, and which other people are interested in, and if so, then I'll run a PBF of that game.

And there you have it. Go and have a think if necessary, but I'm happy to take any suggestion and at least find out if it's viable. If someone has an interesting enough game, I'd even be willing to try and run a prototype of a game.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

7 wonders could work.  To keep down on mod PMing, I would suggest a system like:

Mod starts age by PMing all players with their starting hands.
Players PM mod with their draft choice and confirm "choice made" in thread.
When all players have chosen, they post publicly in thread what they did and then PM the mod and player they pass to with the hand they get.  This way mod can keep players accountable but the mod doesn't have to send a bunch of PMs to everyone (though the mod would receive a bunch of PMs).

7 Wonders is definitely viable. I have easy access to card lists for base, leaders and/or cities, although probably going mad with expansions is... nah, you guys could handle it ;). Although probably just base is fine.

Edit: Just noticed you suggested this, oh, one minute before your post in the Non-mafia sticky as well :P. It's definitely one I'd be happy to try out and one I think we'd fine vict...unteers for. Volunteers for.

I thought that's what the Non-Mafia Games Queue Thread is made for: To make suggestions. But we can have a separate thread for sure.
I'm happy to play any game by forum at least once because I cannot play different games in my gaming group that often.
I haven't played 7 Wonders so far although I know the basic rules of it. But I'm happy to join any game.

I don't get to play enough of Ghost Stories at home. I *think* it might work okay as PBF.

I've been tempted to feel out the interest for Red November. I'm not sure I have the moxie to run a Ghost Stories game, though.

Kingdom Builder would probably work, in honour of the man who brought us all together.

A Game of Thrones.
Battlestar Galactica.

I'd even host. There was no interest for agot, but bsg might work?

Qvist: Sorry, I didn't know that was the intention of the topic  :-[. I don't think the name really gave that away!

Ghost Stories is plausible, although IIRC there's a fair bit of dice rolling which might keep things slowed down a bit.
Red November looks like it could be done, if I can get a materials list.
Kingdom Builder, definitely a good idea, although I have to admit, I'm not so great with image manipulation and that does sound like it'd be something that wants to be done via images.
Game of Thrones, definitely could work, not my favourite game though but I have access to the card lists (2nd ed only). Probably another image difficulty one
BSG, for some reason, is definitely one I think I could manage. I can work around doing an awful lot with images, fortunately.
Terra Mystica, again, looks good but seems somewhat image heavy.
Dominant Species, same issue again pretty much, although that might be easier to work around.
Taikyoku Shogi... I'd rather not :P.

So far I think my favourite suggestions to run myself are 7 Wonders and BSG. I'll see what I can do about them.

I would be interested in a 7 Wonders PBF. The drafting should work well (It did with DoMafia :P) and publicly posting actions would probably be the best.

Currently there are two expansions, two promo wonders, three promo leaders and two upcoming expansions. And supposedly another 4 expansions after that. (And I hope all those links are right :P)

Also I've started preparing stuff for the 7 Wonders PBF. I won't make a topic yet because I'd like to say how I'm going to run it, which I haven' quite worked out yet, but it's going to happen.

Not sure for BSG, but for AGoT there is a GIMP/Photoshop ready file where you just move/hide/show layers that you need.
Give that BSG is also played a lot on BGG, I'd be surprised if there is no such thing for it as well?

Oh, and about Dominant species - I never played it. But I'd try.

Yeah there are things available, but I'm really not great with GIMP and other image programs :(. Despite trying to learn to do stuff in them. That's why I made a BSG thing that's just in paint, because it's easier for me to work with, all I do is cut/paste things on a black background :P.

The reason I didn't sign up for the Small World game--despite the fact that I love the hell out of it--is that I don't really want to have a lot of images based on where I log in. Forum avatars are different, because forums are usually no big deal, and F.DS users aren't so crass as to have naked people or exploding heads. But, a screen shot of a board game? Probably safe, but I'm not taking chances. So, that's why you won't see me in a game that requires image manipulation.

Though, I do agree that Kingdom Builder could work in PBF pretty well. There's no "attacks" between players so there is minimal down time between turns.

More seriously, just to name a few games I never played, but always liked to (I don't know how possible it is to play some of these):

Eclipse
Galaxy Trucker
Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Atlantis Rising
Blood Bowl Team Manager: The Card Game
Space Alert
K2
Trajan
D-Day Dice
Suburbia
Endeavor
Power Grid
Merchants & Marauders
Sake & Samurai
Robinson Crusoe
Gingkopolis

Generally I'm more interested to play some of the heavier, longer games like Through the Ages because we will probably never play these in our gaming group.
What's a lot of work to moderate, but games I like and love to play and I know that these are played on BGG are:

Mage Knight
Civilization

I have that, could easily be persuaded to give it a go, the only difference is that you would have perfect recall on how many gems opponents have. Except i would imagine most of you guys would know that in a real game anyway.
