I knew as soon as I pulled up something wasn't right. This was the address I had gotten from the commissioner, but things were not at all "neat and tidy".
Harding's front window lie shattered into a thousand little glass diamonds all over the street. Inside his office a cold wind was ripping between the furniture, tearing anything that wasn't secured from it's holding.
As I slowly approached the front window I reached inside my coat and unclipped my GOVERNOR from it's holster. I stood with my back to the gritty brick wall just outside the office, listening intently. I could hear movement from deeper within.
Careful to make as little sound as possible I stepped through the shattered window, cursing each and every shard of glass that crunched beneath my shoes.
Inside I took stock of everything that was still here - two bookshelves on the right wall, a desk facing the front window, three overturned leather seats in the corner, and in the very back, behind the desk, a cracked door where I could hear someone cursing under their breath.
Creeping around the room I reached Harding's desk and reached for the phone to put in a quick call to the comm - but the line was cut. No backup would be coming.
I was about to continue making my way around to the door when I heard the sound of quickly approaching footsteps. I dropped to my knees behind the desk and pulled my GOVERNOR out, making sure it was loaded.
I didn't get down with a second to spare. The door burst open and I could hear the sound of a man stumble through. He was still talking to himself.
"Damnit! Where is it?!? Why here? Why do I feel like this place is so damn familiar? And why do I know there's something I need to find?"
I could hear him moving closer, I knew I couldn't stay hidden long. It was time to make the jump on my unknown guest, and hope that I was quicker than he was.
No time like the present. 3... 2... 1...
