Welcome to Gauntlet of Fools!

I'll be the moderator and die roller for everyone because well there is no other way to roll dice here. Feel free to chat in the thread, talk like your character whatever you want!

Rules
1. No outside communication.
2. I will try to resolve at least one encounter for everyone each day so because of that, if you wish to use an ability you have 12 hours from when I post the encounter to use any "before rolling" abilities and 12 hours after I post results for after rolling abilities. If you do not wish to use an ability I request you post No ability uses
4. IF I post an encounter on the weekends, the timer for abilities will not start till the Monday after
3. Have fun!

This game can fit up to 6 people.

Once this game has 2 people it will start 24 hours after the last person who signed up, or when it hits 6 whichever comes first.

Full disclosure: I will be using random.org for all die rolls, I will roll them in TURN order

Boasting.

When the game starts the post below will show the character/weapon combinations available. Here's how we'll do boasting. Let's use players Alice, Bob, and Carol


Alice goes first

Alice decides to take the ninja with a bow, she declares this along with any boasts she wishes to add (she does not have to)

Next Bob decides to take either a different hero or the ninja, if he takes the ninja he MUST add a boast. Boasting continues till all have a hero.

Example
Alice takes ninja with a bow without breakfast
Bob takes ninja with a bow without breakfast, and hopping on one foot
CAROL takes Priest with a staff
Alice takes Priest with a staff, with a hang over
Carol takes Barbarian with a dagger.

NOTE: Each hero can only have 1 of each type of boast


Combat. Once the Encounter is up before rolls are posted.
Use Weapon Token and Use Class Token are the respective ways to use your ability

The Boasts
While Juggling - After rolling subtract 1 from the total, Start with half as many weapon tokens as normal
With a Hangover - Roll 1 Less Die, -4 Defense, Discard this boast when you Kill your first Monster
One Arm Tied Behind Back - Any die's showing 1 and 2 are ignored treating them as 0's
Blindfolded - If you both kill & dodge the monster score 1 less gold.
Hopping on One Leg - -2 Defense
Without Breakfast - Start with 1 wound.

Pairings
Monk with a Spear
Ninja with a Scepter
Adventurer with a Cleaver
Trapper with a Mace
Armsmaster with a Sling AND Deadly Fists
Artificer wiith a Scimitar

Details on the Classes
Monk - 10 Defense, 4 Class Tokens. Ability: Spend a token before rolling to roll an additional die and +4 defense this turn

Ninja - 17 Defense, 0 Class Tokens. Ability: Start with twice as many weapon tokens.

Adventurer - 15 Defense, 2 Class Tokens. Ability: Spend a token after an Encounter, once per Encounter, visit that Encounter again.

Trapper - 16 Defense, 2 Class Tokens. Ability: Before Rolling, once per fight, Treasures have an extra 2 gold for you this turn.

Armsmaster - 14 Defense, 0 Class Tokens. Ability: Before boasts deal an extra weapon to the armsmaster. When rolling pick which weapon to use

Artificer - 15 Defense, 2 Class Tokens. Ability: When you Kill a monster you may spend a token to, instead of getting treasure, get an additional 1 die for the rest of the game (This would make the scimitar have 5 or 6 dice as you use the ability)


Details on the Weapons
Spear - 4 Dice, 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token after rolling to replace your roll with 14.

Scepter - 4 Dice, 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token before rolling to kill a monster with attack less than it's defense

Cleaver - 1 Die. Ability: After Rolling multiply your total by 4

Mace - 5 Dice. 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token after rolling to roll an additional die.

Sling - 3 Dice. 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token before rolling to kill and dodge a monster with 20 or more attack

Deadly Fists - 3 Dice. 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token before rolling to kill and dodge a monster

Scimitar - 4 Dice. 2 Weapon Tokens. Ability: Spend a token after rolling to re roll 2 dice.

Note: If the ability does not say spend a token it is a static ability.

Not very hard to do ok. (It's easy to play). How well you do will depend on your ability to evaluate heroes which does become easier the more you've played the game.

Yeah, I also read the rules just now, and it's super easy. I will probably have to get this game. It seems to be very quick, casual and fun! Also, have I mentioned that I love dungeon crawls of all kinds?

You walk into the local tavern with 5 of your closest adventurers. You guys have been to hell and back together! "Remember when I beat that Dragon while juggling?" "Oh I have that beat, I beat an army of kobolds without breakfast!" came the reply.

The Monk, Ninja, Adventurer, Trapper, Armsmaster, and Artificer walked up the bar and ordered some drinks, for in the morning they were entering a Gauntlet and even with all of their accomplishments this was no easy task ahead of them.

Oddly enough they both roll 3D6 so it doesn't matter they just get access to 2 different kill abilities.

Not unless you quoted them wrong...

They both say 3 dice? The ability is different but the armsmaster gets to use BOTH abilities TWICE over the course of the game for 4 ability uses.

They both say 3 dice, but one is restricter to 20attack plus and the other one doesnt

Ahh no I see the problem now. Each WEAPON has its OWN tokens, so both weapons can only use their ability twice, IE the armsmaster can use the sling ability twice and the deadly fists ability twice.

Ahh no I see the problem now. Each WEAPON has its OWN tokens, so both weapons can only use their ability twice, IE the armsmaster can use the sling ability twice and the deadly fists ability twice.

All of our turns are simultaneous, so your timezone won't be a problem.  It's just this bidding phase that will be a pain.  Also, I don't expect it to be more than 2 or 3 full rounds of bidding.

I didn't expect it to take off as quick as it did, I was intending to do 1 encounter or so a day. So it's not a big deal and the intent is for it to be spread out.

Young boy Eustace Wigglesworth had always been fascinated by flowers. So much, in fact, that when he turned 12, he became an apprentice at the local flower shop. The other boys bullied him to no end. Especially that pesky monster of the Drewbing's that later turned out to be a dog rather than a hairy boy with linguistical problems. But young Wigglesworth was not discouraged by the mean boys, and at the age of 14, he was a full-fledged florist. Things were looking good for young Wigglesworth. He even had his eyes on a girl from the bakery across the street. Young miss Flora Abercrombie. A delightful young lady who everyone adored.

But at Eustace's very own 15th birthday something terrible happened. The Drewbings had tried to make a pact with the dark powers to ensure wealth and prosperity for the rest of their lives, but failed miserably. They had instead summoned a Collosal Swarm of Dire Locusts. Flying beasts were everywhere! Doors were slammed shut, and people huddled in their houses. Nobody dared venture out. Eustace dared a peek out the window and saw what would ultimately change his life... Forever! Flora Abercrombie had not made it inside before the doors of the bakery had been shut. A gruesome scene took place before Wigglesworth's eyes. Flora was torn to pieces by the locust swarm. A single tear of agony trickled down Eustace's cheek. He closed his eyes and clenched his fists. Stretching his arms up to the cieling and cursing the very day thi happened. After the swarm had moved on, almost nothing remained of his home town. He packed a bag of what little belongings he had left. Stole a butcher's cleaver, named it after Flora. and set out on his great adventure to find a new girl, a new town and a new flower shop.

BOAST: Eustace Wigglesworth (Adventurer) with Abercrombie (Cleaver), while juggling and with one arm tied behind his back.

I don't know much about the game, but I don't expect 4's and 8's are going to help me tremendeously. And I've interpreted the rules so that a rolled 1 or 2 equals 0 with the juggling cleaver. Eustace Wigglesworth is not a sissy anymore!

I think you are all right, but I was checking that 'While Juggling - After rolling subtract 1 from the total,'
If that is done after you roll the dice, but before you multiply...

That means 6's will count as 5's (and then only go up to 20), 5's will be 4's (and only go up to 16), 4's will be 3's and only go up to 12, and 3.2.1 will all not count for anything.

I can't access the rules right now, but both the Cleaver and the While Juggling are effects that happen at the same time; "after rolling". What decides the order?

I think you are alright

Each player rolls the number of Attack dice (        ) indicated on their
Hero’s Class card. Add the total of your dice and apply the effects of
any applicable Class & Weapon Abilities, Boasts, Penalties and/or
Bonuses to determine your Attack Strength

Theres nothing in the FAQ about either Cleaver or Juggling,

What's the language on the Axe card? 

I ask because the FAQ in the rules says, for Axe, "Double your Attack Strength after applying any other modifiers, such as While Juggling’s penalty."  So in the case of Axe, the -1 happens first and then you double.  But does the Axe card have the same language as Cleaver, or different language?

The evenig before heading into the gauntlet, the artificer prepares. He sharpens the blade of his scimitar and polishes it. Then he checks wether he still fits into his chainmail, and , once again, notices that his best times might be over. He has grown fat and the chainmail is tighter than it used to be. It  lies heavy on his shoulders. But It will suffice, he's sure. Even with the sheer energy and athleticism of his youth long past, an experienced hero as him will be able to defeat some lousy monsters, even with one arm tied behind his back. So he takes off his chaimail, packs his provisions and his scimitar and heads down to the bar to get the most important preparations for his new adventure done.

The unnamed Armsmaster checked both his weapons, he would show these fools exactly how to slay monsters, there was not a dungeon he had found yet that he had not tamed!

Of course, he had only been in Dungeons named 'the not so deep pit', 'easy streets', and 'Level 1 generic'

He wondered what this one would be called, he hoped it was 'My First Dungeon' thathe had read about in the Argos catalog!

The adventurers headed to the gauntlet after a good night of partying, and little rest. They were confident they would be the first to best the Gauntlet, so confident that many of them were preoccupied by juggling or tying their arms behind their back. They approached what looked like a long abandoned tornado shelter and proceeded down inside. After what felt like a 30 minute descent they reached the ground floor of the Gauntlet. Here bodies lay strewn about as thought they were little more than a child's playthings, blood splattered the walls in a way that would leave the normal man feeling just a bit queasy. But the adventurers here today were not normal men, for you this was nothing more than a walk in the park. Cautiously the adventurers passed by a door and this door appears to have been sealed as the walls closed in on an indeterminate number of men, it is now that they notice they have been walking in about 4 inches of blood, leaving stains on whatever footwear they are wearing, while they are thinking about how to best clean them a banshee jumps out at them and lets loose a horrible wail! The adventurers ready their weapons.

Encounter is a Banshee!
Attack: 23
Defense: 16
Penalty if hit: 1 Wound OR -3 Defense for the rest of the game
Reward for killing: 4 Gold

Deadline for using "before rolling" tokens is 12PST (3pm forum time) Monday the 12th.

HAHAHAHAHA, i laugh at Banshee's

The unnamed Armsaster reached for his sling and activated its special properties, aiming a perfect killing shot!

It whizzed straight through in incorporeal bansheer......straight into the unusually placed phone booth, hitting the Recall button.

A womans voice came on the line..."Hello, Switchboard, Who would you like to call?"
His sling still humming, the warrior grinned and calmly said "Ghostbusters"

He picked up his treasure, and whistled the theme tune as he walked past, leaving Venkman and co to deal with the Banshee, all thoughts of his hangover fogotten.


Armsmaster uses a sling weapon token to kill and dodge, collecting one less gold, but losing his hangover

"What weaklings all those corpses must have been", the artificer thinks while stumbling over one of them, "but couldn't they have gotten out of the way while stumbling over one of them". Even though he's convinced he can kill whatever killed those guys with one hand tied behind his back, getting up that way is not quite as easy, but somehow he manages. After walking through the door, he charges at the banshee.
No abilities used obviously

Question: If i use my weapon ability, i can't reroll just one die, right? If thats right conditional orders:
Don't reroll, take wound and 4 gold in the likely case I kill that thing

The scimitar went right through the banshee without any effect whatsoever. What was this beast? It let out a terrible shriek, while stretching out its cold, white hand towards him. The sound of her voice was so shrill that the artificier feared it might permanently affect his sense of balance, so instead of trying to push away the hand reaching for him, he dropped his scimitar and wrung his unbound hand around his ears, so he didn't have to hear the sound anymore. Being touched by the banshee hurt terribly, and he let out a shriek nearly as shrill as the banshee's. Luckily, she let go of him and he managed to escape before she could attackn again. He was wounded, and his head still hurt from all the ale he had drunk the night before, but at least he would be able to defend himself from whatever he was going to face next without loosing balance.

we have classes and equipment, we fight random monsters by rolling dice to get through a dungeon, the whole thing's a bit silly - those are all parallels to Munchkin.

It's more strategic and probably more fun, but that's the DXV touch, right?

It kind of reminds me of the flight mode of Galaxy Trucker or the adventurers mode in Dungeon Lords. You may have some decisions to make while you're getting trounced, but the majority of the planning has already been done.

The Armsmaster wondered what it was then....possibly the most unstealthy ninja humming?

He stepped in so,ething sticky...presuming it was Wiggles-no-worths blood he looked down....it was honey...

And that meant either killer bees or winnie the pooh....he hoped it was the bees...

"Mhmm, honey", the artificer thinks, "even though i was clever enough to eat breakfast, unlike this lucky trapper guy, something sweet after the shock in the room before sounds nice. This must be one of those rooms without monsters in it." But as he approaches the delicious smell, suddenly there's loud buzzing all around the room and a swarm of bees launches at him. He draws his scimitar, which is surprisingly still tied to his belt, even though he dropped it in the last room and starts slashing at them. He's pretty sure that he'll win this time, since he still has some tricks up his sleeve. And then, after eating that honey, maybe the headache will go away, and he will be stronger than before.

No abilities before rolling, if I fail to get 6 (lol) I will use a token to reroll the two lowest (twice if it still doesn't work) and if I win in the end, I'll use a hero token to get an extra die (I assume taking the hero token would also count as gaining treasure, so i can't do that in addition)

Who would have thought immediatly after fighting a monster they'd step on a bee hive. Clumsy group the lot of them could be. They adventure further down the dungeon, narrowly avoiding all sorts of swinging sword style traps. Until A man jumps out of a door way yelling "FOR SPARTA!" And kicks the leader (Frisk) in the chest.

Feeling refreshed after eating the honey and spreading some of it over the hilt of his scimitar, so it would lie better in his hand, the artificer felt near invincible now. What could possibly stop him now?
Then that man jumped out of the door way and proposed a wager: He loved betting, and there was no way way he could possibly loose here. But when he looked into his purse, he found it empty. Desperately, he begged his companions to lend him some money, but despite all his promises he'd pay them back (he wouldn't, of course, they'd be dead in some hours anyway), they refused. Well, maybe at least he'd find something to further upgrade his scimitar among the possesions of the gladiator.

Bet 0 gold, no weapon token (even after rolling), if I win spend class token to upgrade weapon. Btw, the encounter name is missing.

I use my stupid scepter token.

"Stupid Scepter, no good against bees, no good against Banshees, why'd I even buy this stupid thing?" Nobby wonders aloud as he blindly hop-stumbles noisily through the dungeon. "I bet it couldn't even kill a giant crab."

It's just as he's having that thought that he trips over a giant crab. His scepter slips out of his hand, flies high into the air, and lands on the creature's carapace, shattering it.

I hope he's doin ok as well. I missed him the last few days in the RMM spectator thread. Maybe with his guidance I would've lynched Shraeye instead of Ashersky. With no heads up given though (I think? Will double check the VLA thread), and such a complete disappearance I do worry. Come back to us Ozle!

I could do with Frisk whiffing here and then a load of easy encounters , getting that healing pool and the token pool early really messed up my game plan!

This game did go wierd, I DID expect Frisk to win when he got the trapper without breakfast/hungover, but all the other heroes got alot of boasts.

You'll note that 3rd, 4th, 5th all were 1 coin off of each other.

The scepter is a very swingy weapon. It's either an auto-win or its completely useless. And the Ninja class basically puts all it's eggs in the weapon token basket.

So in retrospect, ninja with a scepter is a pretty lame combo.

So in retrospect, ninja with a scepter is a pretty lame combo.
