Buying Physical Dominion
« on: July 24, 2012, 03:30:09 pm »

Need to buy my own physical copy of dominion.

I'm good enough to beat recreational players, and would be mincemeat to the real pros.

Anyways, I don't want to spring for the cash to buy every set.  I figure I will buy base and 1 or 2 expansions.  I'm a fan of Intirgue and Prosperity. however, that just seems to lead to playing BM most of the time.

If i'm going to buy 2-3 sets of Dominion, which one should I buy?  Please keep in mind that the gameplay should be fun for newbs in multiplayer settings.

Thoughts?

Gut reaction?  Base, Seaside, Prosperity.

IMO, go after Base set, Seaside and Prosperity.

Hinterlands is a favorite as well, but not so good on new players.

...or just buy all of them. That's what I ended up doing. :)

Base Cards (So you'll have Platinum), Dark Ages, Seaside

(Though my gut reaction was Base/Intrigue/Seaside, add more when you can afford)

I bought Base, Intrigue and Seaside. Then I got ruined by Isotropic and picked up Prosperity. Then I couldn't find anyone to play with because Isotropic made me into a better player than any of my friends.

I am going to get Dark Ages when it releases but I'm having trouble rationalizing buying the remaining expansions when no one wants to play with me anymore.  :'(

That said, I'd probably get Cornucopia or Hinterlands next.

this section from the FAQ might help:

Purchasing The Game
  • Dominion is awesome! What expansions should I buy next? - There is a post over on the blog which tries to answer this question, and you can find a few forum threads (1,2) on the subject as well. If you are looking for more information, there are also a few threads (1,2,3,4,5) which compare various attributes of the different expansions.

If you want to save money (assuming you'll eventually end up getting everything), you can start with the big box (includes base/alchemy) and then add another big expansion like seaside or prosperity for $100.

*EDIT*  I feel so dirty editing this (stupid mafia) but Insomniac is right.  Big box is Base+Alchemy+Prosperity for $100.

Big box is alchemy+Base+prosperity so dont add prosperity! I know Cuz I did this.

Big Box
Intrigue
Seaside
Cornucopia
Hinterlands
ALL THE PROMOS

--To come--
Promos as they arise
Dark Ages
The Guilds

If you're a fan of those, than those are the ones you should buy. If you find that you end up playing BM most of the time, you should just not do that :). Also add Seaside, which has some great cards for engines.

Is seaside easy to play in RL? Are duration cards more annoying than fun or vice versa?

What's most annoying with durations IRL is cleaning up your Caravan rather than leaving it out and so ending up using it as a pointless cantrip.

But otherwise, I really like Seaside. And yes, it has some awesome engine fun.
For example: Wharf + Fishing Village + Merchant Ship = Awesome.

Nah, it's not particularly annoying. You'll forget to keep durations out on occasion, but after a while you'll get into a habit of setting them a little to the side or turning them sideways or something and everything will go smoothly.

When I play with durations I create a top row for them. The regular cards go on the second row and get cleaned up. During the cleanup the durations move off the top row onto the second row.

When I play other people, it seems like separating Durations is the #1 tricky thing to get down, #2 being the "set aside" mechanic on Golem and such, #3 being that cards go "in play" and not immediately into the discard (I guess I should add Gained cards being discarded to that list).  I consistently hear "Oh shoot, I should have had a Fishing Village left over!" despite my showing the importance of separating the cards every time.  Alas.

Intrigue, Prosperity, Seaside.
You are lucky you have all this advice. My first three were Base, Cornucopia, an Seaside. :o

About durations, if there are alot, I'll make a new row, but if there aren't I'll just deal with them.

I don't like intrigue. Too many cards that change nothing (Secret Chamber, Great Hall, Wishing Well, Coppersmith, Ironworks, Scout) and two that warp the game far too much (Minion, Torturer).

Base, so you can introduce new players easily (need to have more victims!)
Intrigue, so you can have an extra set of base cards and thus can have eight person Dominion parties.
Seaside, because Tactician is fun.

Base because it's awesome, and a great introduction.
Seaside because it's the best expansion in my opinion.
And prosperity because it gives colonies and platinums. With those three sets you should be set, and I think seaside is a blast in person. I MUCH prefer in person to ISO

Intrigue is nice to get a ton of base cards, but really...does anyone enjoy playing dominion with more than 3 or 4 players...I don't like to wait 5 minutes between each turn.

I would say :
- Base, Seaside, Prosperity if you want to introduce new players
- Base, Cornucopia, Hinterlands/Seaside if you want to play with advanced players

I don't like intrigue. Too many cards that change nothing (Secret Chamber, Great Hall, Wishing Well, Coppersmith, Ironworks, Scout)

I agree with you on scout, but so wrong for the rest. Especially coppersmith which is really an amazing card.

Base/Seaside should always be your starting point.

After that, you can go Cornucopia if you want a small expansion. If you want a big one, I don't really know... I'm not a huge fan of Prosperity, so I would probably say Hinterlands.

I recommend saving Cornucopia for later. For two reasons:
1) You will get warped opinions on the cards.
2) You will be confused by HoP and hate Tournament. You will end up hating Tournament anyway, but try to postpone it as long as possible.

This is if you have not played with any of the cards before. If you have, by all means, get Cornucopia.

Cornucopia is by far my favorite expansion. Menagerie and HoP are my two favorite cards of the game. Young Witch is my favorite curser. Jester and Fortune teller are my favorite attacks. Hunting party is my favorite non-terminal drawer. Remake is my favorite trasher. Horse traders is my favorite reaction. I love all cornucopia cards, perhaps a little less tournament but I don't HATE it.
And cornucopia is not the most difficult expansion. I think it's about the same difficulty level as Prosperity.
