Weekly Design Contest #198: No Fear When the End is Near

Design something* that either provides a new endgame trigger besides or instead of the normal two (3 piles, Provinces) or a new winning condition besides or instead of Victory points.

* - No restriction, so card, landscape, split pile, Traveller line, anything goes.

Crowded Village
Action -  $3
+1 Card
+2 Actions
If you have 5 Crowded Villages in play, gain the Curses, and the game ends at the end of this turn.

thank you--this is precisely the design prompt I've been trying to win past weekly design contests in order to propose

Build a deck that shuffles often.
The at the start of turn clause is to prevent this from simply being a soft limit on the number of turns, while the points from setup are added to prevent most turn 1 finishes.

Withdrawn
Quote
Silver Scepter
$5 Action
+1 Action
Discard a card to choose one: gain two Silver; or trash two cards from your Hand.
-
In games using this, during your Action phase, reveal a Hand of three or more and only Silver to end the game.
While this card can help you concentrate Silvers to increase the probability of ending the game earlier, this is only useful if you have more Victory points than others. :)

You might wanna clarify the timing windows of the reveal trigger.

Eye for an Eye
$2 - Event
+1 Buy
Discard a Curse. If you did, each other player gains a Curse
-
In games using this, emptying the Curses pile does not count for the game ending condition

When scoring, -2 points per Duchy you have. In games using this, The game cannot end unless the Duchy pile is empty.

Lost Empire
- Action Victory
+1 Cards, +4 Actions, and +1 Buy
--------
3
Lost Empire’s pile counts as two piles for the purpose of the game-ending condition.

Notes: Use 8 copies for a 2-player game, or 12 copies for 3+ players. Inspired by Enclave.

I didn’t use wording like “this pile and any other pile empty triggers the end of the game condition” because that would function differently in games with 5-6 players, which only end after 4 piles are empty. (Side note: two Dominion games of 3 players each are vastly better than one game of 6 players).

Inspired by 7 Wonders Duel.
Edited: After considering Great Hall, it should be fine to change the cost of Lost Book to .

A garbage collector Traveller line: Centered around trashing, and interactions upon gaining.

NOTE: MACHINATOR HAS A MAJOR TEXT ERROR RIGHT NIOW THAT I WILL FIX AT HOME.
ITS SUPPOSED TO SAY "FOR EACH TYPE THE TRASHED CARD HAD, PLAY AN ACTION CARD FROM YOUR HAND THAT MANY TIMES"
i dont know how to word it exactly, but it machinator is a throne room trash for benefit card
And you essentially get 1 play of a card from hand + The amount of types of the trashed card.
So if you trashed a 2 type card, you get 3 plays of the throne roomed card.

If you set things up correctly, you might be able to win the game in an alternate way with the Garbage Lord!! But that requires gaining A LOT of things from the trash. If you gain a province and gold, then you also need 3-4 more expensive cards to win that way

Enough time to do just a bit more. Whether or not your opponent will have any response as the game nears its end is out of your control, though.

I had several versions of this, but I've narrowed it down to two:
Anyone want to help me choose which of these is better?

alternate version: (This one is not my entry)
Quote
Door to the Land of the Dead
$4 - Event
Once per turn, choose one: Trash a Province from your hand for +7 VP; or trash a Duchy from your hand for +1 VP and, if there is at least one Province in the trash, end the game.
(Should I cut the "once per turn" part?)

This one is my entry for the contest:
Quote
Door to the Land of the Dead
$4 - Event
Once per turn, choose one: Trash a Province from your hand for +7 VP, or gain a Province from the trash and take <6> debt.
-
In games using this, if a turn ends with at least 3 Provinces in the trash, end the game.

<garbage collector Traveller line>

Re: Collector: What if there aren't any single-type Action cards in the kingdom?

Marked seems pretty strong for a $4, even for a $4/3rd step traveller.

I love the art for Garbage Lord, but I suggest lowering the cost threshhold a little (maybe 20 or 25?). When you get to the end of any traveller line, it's probably near the end of the game anyway.

I prefer the second one, but i'd just have the Province cost $1 less in the trash. Debt is too easy for anyone to take and reducing by 2 is already generous. Since there are often times when you have $7 without anything costing $7. It would be nice to occasionally have a Province to gain as an option.

How about the name "Underwood Gate"?

Little Picker: "Collector" should replace "T2".
Collector: "Marked" should replace "T3".
Marked: That attack is too strong in my opinion.
Garbage Collector If you gain a Gold, Duchy, Silver, Estate, and ten Kingdom cards costing $2 that would be $36, so $30 is not unreasonable.

You're leaving out the cost of the event. With this event, gaining a Province from the trash is essentially $4 + <6>debt.

i will edit the errors you mentioned.
How does making marked have "each other player gains a curse" sound?
Is garbage lords $30 threshold too high or too low?
I originally intended top have it win if you gained a certain amount of uniquely named cards, would that be better?

Trying to keep with the games original balance.
The kingdom pile comes with 14 copies.

The kingdom pile comes with 12 copies.

The call timing of this makes the card basically just a +$4 card, which is too strong at $4, even without the bonus.
The wording is unclear about what happens when you call 5 or more "together". There needs to be some safeguard against triggering the Prov/Duchy gain multiple times.
Also, the "together" part is not well defined, since, other than when e.g. discarding multiple cards, you don't call all reserve cards at the same time, but rather one after another.

That sounds better for Marked.
$30 is reasonable - That could be a Gold, a Duchy, a Silver, and four Kingdom cards costing $4 or more. Which could be done with one use of Little Picker and as little as three uses of Marked - so very achievable in a game. I just realized that an opponent's wise use of Machinator could make it difficult for you to achieve the alternative win condition.

Thanks for the comments- fixed it on the original post a little wordy but clearer.
Wanted to make the card give you the temptation to pull it before you have 4 copies.

How do you get $4 with this? On this page Reserve, under "Official Rules" it states "Calling a card does not repeat the abilities on the card above the dividing line; that part only happens when the card is played."  :)

If anything goes, will a mechanic be allowed?

Quote
Prestige mat
(Picture is a track from 0-15 that a coin token moves along. +1 Prestige is moving the token along once.)
When any player gets 15 Prestige, the game ends at the end of the turn. When scoring, if you have the most Prestige or tied, +1VP per 3VP you have; or second most or tied, +1VP per 5VP you have (round down).
Prestige multiplies the total VP you have, so ideally you get a bit of both to do well. Players compete to get the most Prestige, but to avoid the endless game scenario the end condition has to be there. Sometimes a fast Prestige race might win, other times the classic Province pile-out might. The kingdom will determine...

...and I guess I need to put some sample cards together:
Quote
Painter - Action, $4 cost.
+ $1
+1 Prestige

You may trash this for +1 Prestige.
Quote
Concert - Event, $4 cost.
Take the Baton.
Baton - Artifact
At the start of Clean-up, +1 Prestige.
Quote
Engraver - Action, $3 cost.
Choose one: trash a card from your hand; or +1 Prestige per differently named card you've trashed this turn.
Cards could get more creative than this. If just one card should be selected for judging, rather than the mechanic, I will choose Painter.
