Beam me up, Scotty!

How would you go about "beaming" up a Gold from your discard pile to the top of your deck during the buy phase (so no actions...)?

Your draw deck is empty and you have a single Gold in your discard pile.

The original puzzle was wrong and tried to move the Gold to the hand which is not possible

Play Venture? I don't think I'm reading the challenge correctly, though...

Technically I guess Venture doesn't put the Gold into your hand.

Interesting question. I still have no idea. Is it your buy phase or the buy phase of an opponent?

I thought it would be something like:

Opponent plays IGG, you reveal SC and draw the Gold.
However, IGG is not classified as an Attack card, only Action cards have the subtype Attack.

Beginning players often make this mistake and think they can defend with Moat or Lighthouse.

I guess you wouldn't be able to trigger SC from an opponent buying a Noble Brigand either.

But it's classified as an attack, so it may very well be the answer, although I don't know the rules for this and whether there is any difference between an active and a passive attack.

Otherwise, it's of course the answer.

SC triggers when an attack is played, not bought.

Ah yes, I just scrolled through the official rules on RGG and it confirms what you say.

Yeah, I have questions:

-Can it be someone else's buy phase? or does it have to be mine?
-Does it have to be the exact same copy of Gold that was in my discard pile?

Note that no matter how these questions are answered I don't have a solution ;) Noble Brigand/Secret Chamber is close but no cigar, as others have pointed out.

Oh man, I looked through the card list twice and still have nothing! Very difficult.

Hmm, I didn't say "your" buy phase, did I?

It needs to be the same physical card that you bring back from the Discard.

I feel like Possession shenanigans are necessary here, but for the life of me I can't figure out how.

Buying using a Black Market isn't a "buy phase," correct?

Must the Gold reach your hand before the end of the "buy phase?"

Combing the card list I can't see any way to move a card into your hand from any not-in-your-hand location during anybody's buy phase, with the sole exception of playing IGG yourself and putting a Copper in your hand from the Supply. I may be missing something though.

Sorry for wasting your time, people. Watchtower puts stuff on top of the deck and for some reason I was sure it was going to your hand...  :-\

Less whisky, more mineral water next time.

To make it up to you I'll release a new version of my simulator. It'll have all kinds of new shiny features.

As far as I can tell, nothing but IGG, a played Action card, Secret Chamber's reaction (which requires a played action card), filling your hand during cleanup, or one of a few "at the start of your turn" effects can ever move anything into anyone's hand. IGG is intriguing but it specifically names Copper as the card to be put in your hand.

The one hilarious loophole that has occurred to me is that if you consider the game to end during the Buy phase (though I'm pretty sure it actually ends after Cleanup) then you get your Island mat's contents back at that time... but of course you can't get the Gold to your Island mat either since you'd have to play the Island!

I'm stumped.

pre-edit for ninja'd: A-ha, I wondered if this was some kind of puzzlemaking error ;)

You should edit the OP so more people don't start trying to do this puzzle

Play Venture, buy Mandarin, for one of likely many solutions.

ed: I Possess you, make you buy a Noble Brigand, reveal Watchtower from my hand and put the Gold back on top of my deck.

ed2: Play a Horn of Plenty, gaining any Treasure card. Play a Venture, shuffling the other new Treasure card above the Gold and leaving the Gold on top of the deck.

Sorry for correcting you Donald, but I don't think Ironworking an Ironworks lets you draw a card :)  Did you mean Ironworks a victory card?

edit: or I guess you could just play it afterwards.

When Noble Brigand is bought, does that trigger an attack and allow someone to reveal Secret Chamber?

Donald was explaining why it would be bad to have Watchtower put a card in your hand.

Ah! Whoops, I guess I read it incorrectly then.

No.
