This isn't really an article, more of a question.

Has anyone tried Count/Duke?

It would seem to me that one of Count's first options "Put a card back" can be helpful with multiple Counts and you could use the second for either +$3 or a Duchy.

Thoughts?

Of course it works. It slows down after the duchies run out but the mandarin effect was mildly useful in duke games anyway and that carries on until the game end.

Is it better to still rush the Duchies first, or should you buy Dukes while getting free Duchies?

Well, I imagine it depends on your opponent. The more he is into Duke/Duchy, the harder you spam Duchy. Still, I would imagine I want to go Duchies first, just in case my opponent tries to snag 1 or 2 from me.

How many Counts would you use? As many as possible?

"As many as possible" seems like the wrong question to me, as Count contends Duke and Duchy with its 5€ price tag.

If I am not wrong, the interesting question would rather be "When do I switch from Counts to Duchies"?

I didn't play this so far, but from my gut I would get a Duchy everytime I have a Count in hand and try to buy up to 3 Counts. Then switch to Duke and keep gaining Duchies from Count. When the Duchies are gone and I'm right before a reshuffle I might get a 4th Count.

My experience is, 3 counts is ideal. Of course, it depends on the speed of your opponent's deck.

The fact that you can only gain duchy from count should not affect how you choose between duchy/duke that much, if you can almost always get a $5 card out from that +$3.

Yeah... but maybe, if you buy dukes when you still can and gain duchies later, you can start greening a bit earlier.

Two Counts on a 5/2 opening. 1 Count on a 3/4. The exception would be of course if your opponent avoided Count/Duke altogether.

The reason for going for 1 Count on the 3/4 Split is that you want to get those Duchies ASAP. And, if your opponent buys a Count, that is a turn he could have bought a Duchy. A Count has to reach 1 reshuffle first. So, I believe that if you go for 1 Count, you will might win the Duchy split. But, I guess we really need to see what the simulators have to say.

One time though, I did open Count on a 5/2 Duke board. My opponent conceded.

Probably. 2 early counts is awesome. And if they collide, one just puts the other back as a "penalty".

You can play this as an essentially overpriced Horse trader - always take a copper, buy silvers on <5, gain duchies early and then power out the dukes, and use top decking should Counts collide.

Having played more Count/Duke games, getting two Counts seems about optimal. 3 is too many. 1 is too little.
