I demand that all derivations begin from the dominion Grand Canonical Partition Function.

Easily embargo, on any board that has even the remote possibility for multiple strategies.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Fun 2/5 combo: Embargo/Haggler
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:42:09 pm »
I would embargo silver instead of hagglers, esp.I'd your opponent didn't open silver/silver or equivalent.  Use haggler to buy $4 and get your silvers free.  Could really slow down your opponent if she/he has to dance around silver for a while.

4
Ruminating further, I think as a thought experiment, the comparison would be to opening chapel/chapel.  You have the same odds of getting 1 chapel (or maybe 2) on turn 3/4, and are not really any worse of than having a "worthless" cantrip.

5
I think you're risking dollars to make pennies, because 83% of the time, you're hurting your economy and getting behind.

6
I can only see duchess being useful if there's another alt vp, otherwise what's the third pile? Estate would be too slow for too little payout.

We need a reference to the apocryphal Einstein quote about compounding interest.

A better strategy would be to rapidly play and un-play coins to thoroughly confuse you opponent.  The only requirement is quoting the great Dirty Harry on the virtues of counting.

Prosperity   -0.54%
Seaside   -0.73%
Dominion   1.08%
Intrigue   0.73%
Alchemy   -1.25%
Hinterlands   -1.67%
Cornucopia   2.97%
Promotional   -0.18%

I would imagine were it not for Hunting Party, the Cornucopia effect would be significantly diminished.

Dominion Articles / Re: Contraband
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:27:12 am »
Doesn't work as well on Isotropic, but there is the bluff with contraband where you "accidentally"play all of your treasure at the same time to try to manipulate their proscription choice, but actually hold additional in your hand.  As in lay down 5 (contraband and 2 copper), they block lab,  then drop the extra copper and grab the gold. Did this to my wife IRL (played up the"oops" and everything ), and occasionally against weaker players online. Only works once, though, so make it count.

Dominion Articles / Re: Transmute
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:26:45 am »
Had one with transmute, great hall, and silk road that worked well, although the opponent wasn't great so I can't guarantee it was optimal.  Buy great hall on 3, silk road on 4, and either explode great hall for duchy/gold, or other transmutes to set up more duchies.  Pretty niche, though.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What cards are the most fun?

Bishop - Trashing, alt VP strategies, and my second favorite chess piece all rolled into one

Embargo - For the lulz

Forge - Great for the win rate by sucking in unsuspecting victims

..I had to edit the chrome on Firefox...

??? You did what now?

Yeah?  You don't know about that?  It's like editing the explorer on Safari.  ;)

I don't know if this is what the OP is talking about, but if you dig deep into Firefox, they call the markup that controls their interface "the chrome."  The term pre-dates the Google browser.  https://developer.mozilla.org/en/XUL_School/The_Essentials_of_an_Extension#The_Chrome

That is in fact what I was referencing, although the sleek redesign has been a nice benefit.

Hamlet would give the buy and discard, probably more successfully than cellar all said and done.

15
I've never seen it work effectively.

16
Even in text mode I had to edit the chrome on Firefox to see everything and still be able to read anything.

17
Absent Governor I think it could be tricky, but with it's ability to both set both your hand and the possessed one, I think it would have been optimal.

18
The only card I have a particular love for is Embargo.

Don't really despise any.

Dominion General Discussion / Why do you enjoy Dominion?
« on: May 02, 2012, 08:03:19 pm »
It has most of the elements I enjoyed in MTG (granted that was around 18 years ago) at substantially lower Capex and wider playability (my wife will even occasionally indulge, although she prefers Ticket to Ride.)

There is something especially gratifying about torching Alchemists.

I remember a particularly satisfying game with remodel, grand market, and peddler.

Dominion Articles / Re: Pace
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:25:11 am »
Don't forget about using pace to annoy an opponent in resignation.  I suggest 8-9 pawns, at 30 seconds each to check the appropriate boxes.

23
Without debating the merit of the others on the lists:

Hamlet easily makes it into top $2, circa 3.

I'll buck the trend and say Fortune Teller doesn't belong on the worst list.

Tournament takes at least honourable mention on $4.

Hunting party displaces lab.

The fact that people far smarter than me chose to include that option means there's probably some nuance that I lost on me.

Ph.D. in chemical physics - although they pay to me to be an engineer.  Funny how that works.

Part of the boredom that was public education was being forced to take a full year of Trig.  But the teacher had a poster of pi to 75 digits, which I committed to memory and retain to this day.  Could have gone much further if the poster had had more digits.
