Next One Day Cup - Aug 4th
« on: July 22, 2012, 08:06:35 pm »
+2

With the Swiss portion of IsoDom coming to a close next Sunday, and the National Qualifiers out of the way, I think it's safe to start another One Day Cup! I'm looking at holding it Saturday August 4th at 10 AM Eastern US Time (GMT -4).

In an effort to find the best format for this tournament, I plan on doing this a little differently than last time. This time I'd like the tournament to be pool play, with players split up into seeded pools of 3-6 players. After all players check in at the appropriate time that day (15 minutes early, please), I'll release the pools and the schedule. Players will play each other member of their pool in a best-of-five match. After pool play, either the winner or the top two (depending on whether there are 4 or 8 pools) in each pool will move on to single-elimination best-of-seven quarterfinals.

Some other rules:
Unless otherwise agreed to:
Point tracker: ON (By popular demand. ed.)
Veto mode: OFF
Same starting hands: OFF
Point tracker extension: OFF (Not likely to change this, but again, if mutually agreed upon, go for it)

Tiebreaker rules:
1. Head to Head
2. Least individual games lost between tied opponents
3. Least individual games lost between all opponents
4. Coin flip

If you'd like to join the tournament, just make a comment saying "In" or something like that and I'll add you. Any questions or comments on any of the format and rules are encouraged. If the majority seem to dislike this format, I'm willing to change it to a swiss like last time, but I'd like to at least try this one. I think that's it. If anything seems missing, let me know. Otherwise, see you in a couple weeks! :)

I'm in.
I assume Saturday 4th?
I think you need to put in game point counter on though.
Especially for a 1 day event, point counter off should make the games longer.
Both though games not being ended when "over" due to the score.
And players taking longer to remember (or record) the score.

I would like to play; I would prefer the official iso point counter to be on, but would be interested either way. :D

Okay. I think I'll add a poll to this regarding the point counter, and whatever comes on top by this Sunday is what we'll use. I'm leery about coming to a conclusion any later than this Sunday, and I honestly don't have too strong of a preference.

Hm. I was hoping more people would have signed up by this point.

Luckily, we can still play round robin with one or two pools, but hopefully we'll get a bunch of last minute sign-ups. If not, nothing really changes except obviously we won't have 8-player single-elimination, but perhaps 2 or 4 player.

I have the same time problems. That would be 4am in the morning for me.
How long will it take? I'll decide until tomorrow.

I would estimate about 30-45 minutes per round of play (perhaps less than last time, since you don't have to wait for all opponents to finish to start your next match. So that puts it at right around three hours, longer still if you advance from pool play, but more like 1.5 to two hours if we end up getting at least 13 players (we're at 10 now).

Sorry about the time zone thing. I tried to pick the most accomodating time for those in the US and Eastern and Central Europe, and if you're outside those time zones I can see how that's a pain.

Ah, sorry. I miscalculated. It's 4pm for me. I'm still not sure if I'll have time then. I'll check that until tomorrow.

It is also looking bad for me, though I could maybe still play.  I don't think I can commit beyond a couple of hours though.

Almost certainly in.  Up to 21 games in the knockout stages worries me slightly: if numbers don't increase significantly I'd suggest a top 4 knockout tournament, or cutting the earlier rounds down to best of 5.

With so few players, it's almost certainly going to be 4 player knockout, maybe even just a two-player final if we get less than 8, because I don't want the top two from a three player pool moving on. I was planning on addressing this later tonight, but with what looks like two pools, it will be at most 4 players in the knock out round.

How is it going to work with Isotropic having the lag issues? I've been kicked out of a lot of games this week. Is that an automatic loss? Seems unfair but I'm not sure what else you could do...

I guess I hadn't really thought critically about it. Here's a tentative ruling, though.

If any player times out in the first five turns, the game should be replayed with no penalty.

If a player times out after that, the game should be forfeited by that player, unless their opponent agrees to replay it.

That doesn't seem all that fair considering it is not a single player having lag issues, but it is Isotropic that is the problem.

Hm. Well let's see. We could go on the honor system and assume if someone says they timed out/ got kicked out they actually did, and didn't just close their window and are trying to get an extra game. And if both players get kicked out then it should obviously get replayed.

I just don't think we can easily differentiate between closing the tab and someone legitimately getting kicked out. So I'll stick by my ruling, but suggest that players replay games where a player gets kicked out.

That is, unless you see some way of proving you were kicked out.

I was literally just about to post. So I'll post it in a separate topic at X:45, b/c it can change pretty drastically depending on who doesn't show up.

So head over to the Secret Chamber, everyone! I'll see you there.

Sounds fun.  I'd like to join if there's room.  Also, should we use the Tournament lobby to control first player and so that everyone gets equal matches to start as first player?
