Game State Tracker:

The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread or shared QTs at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by PM.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay. If you are not sure about your paraphrase, ask the mod first.
4. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
5. All night actions must be submitted within 24 hours of day ending.
6. Players must post once every 24 hours.
7. Do not edit or delete posts, ever, in either the game thread or QTs. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
8. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
9. Cryptography is not allowed.
10. The time between an exile being decided and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the exiled player.
11. Players removed from the game via Exile or Night Action may not post in the thread or QTs, except their personal QT. A player is not "removed" until a flip has been provided.
12. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread or QTs.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambiguous nicknames are acceptable.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may vote: no exile.
5. Exiles occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, an exile cannot be undone by unvoting or voting to exile another player.
6. Exile rules vary by the number of players alive.  With 10 or more players alive, the player with the most votes at the end of the day will be exiled.  Ties are broken by coin flip.  With nine or less players alive, if a majority exile is not reached by the deadline, no exile occurs.

The Rest:
1. Bold, maroon text is reserved for the Mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please PM the Mod. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via PM or in your Role QT. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.  You may also bold questions to the Mod directly in the game thread.
6. One prod will be issued after 36 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod, up to modkill.

Deadlines:
1. Days will last 7 IRL days.
2. Nights will last no longer than 48 IRL hours.

Mafia Game Threads / RMM45: The Flash Mafia, Earth ?? (Day 1)
« on: September 08, 2017, 11:19:23 am »
My name is Asher Queen. After four years in hell, I returned home with only one goal: to save my sub-forum. Today I fight that war on two fronts. By day, I lead Mafia Game Threads as its Mod. But by night, I am someone else. I am something else. I am the Maroon Arrow.

Now, even greater evils are spilling into my sub, affecting my friends and my world.  The worst villains of Center City have begun to expand their reign of terror.  They aren't just crossing through the city limits, but the limits of time and space.

I need your help.  I am headed to Center City to join the Flash and his team to put an end to this evil once and for all.

This game will use an Original, Closed, RMM setup designed by ashersky.  It is considered highly advanced.  Knowledge of flavor is not required, but will enhance your enjoyment.

General Discussion / Collecting
« on: April 09, 2017, 04:15:21 pm »
Anyone into collecting anything?  I'm thinking more of the physical object variety, as opposed to Pokemon or speed run records.

I'm getting into the fascinating but unfortunately expensive world of horology (specifically watches at this point).  I've uncovered quite the slew of websites, forums, and blogs dedicated to it (much like f.ds is here for Dominion).  It's also gotten me back onto eBay after years of inactivity...

Any interesting items you collect?  Amazing collections?  Crazy obsessions?

12. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable.

6. Lynch rules vary by the number of players alive.  With 10 or more players alive, the player with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched.  Ties are broken by coin flip.  With nine or less players alive, if a majority lynch is not reached by the deadline, no lynch occurs.

The Rest:
6. One prod will be issued after 36 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod. No prods will be issued.  Players who do not post for 24 hours will be modkilled.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod, up to modkill.

Deadlines:
1. Days will last 48 IRL hours.
2. Nights will last no longer than ten IRL minutes.

Mafia Game Threads / f.ds Mafia Game Creation Guide(s)
« on: October 19, 2016, 03:25:27 am »
Inspired by the rinkworks manifesto regarding fan cards for Dominion, here is my own game creation guide for f.ds mafia.

The text below is my own input, with additions from other experienced mods.  I will also link to contributions made in the comments that I either haven't assimilated below or may differ enough from my advice to fit better as a separate post.

For faust's thoughts, see here.
For scott_pilgrim's input, see here.
For silverspawn's argument against multiball (with which I may not agree), see here.

The first rule of mafia game design is you don't talk about...wait, no.  The first rule of mafia game design is that you can ignore all the rules.  Forum mafia is an unregulated genre of games that we all play for enjoyment and nothing else.  Even "officially" "sanctioned" "tournaments" are just regular mafia games played with a more diverse set of players.

So why write a guide at all?  Because for a lot of players, the amount of enjoyment garnered from a game is at least somewhat related to the design, balance, and theme of a game.

And why me?  At this point, cameos from golden oldies excepted, I am the longest tenured player/mod on the forum.  I've been honored to be chosen by other members of the forum as one of the best players, mods, and game designers around.  And lastly because I'm enamoured with the theory and meta of forum mafia, possibly even more than playing!

*These are my thoughts and opinions, and you don't even have to read them.  Other great mods will assuredly comment on them, both in agreement and disagreement.  You should definitely read those comments!*

A final note: this post is only about game design, not moderation.  As such, it does not discuss vote counts, in-game rulings, etc.

ashersky's tips, tricks, and warnings!

1. Know the game. Put in the simplest terms, you need to have experience as a player and a moderator before you can successfully design an original, spectacular game.  Ideally, you'll have played multiple games as both town and scum, as both vanilla and power roles, in the category of game you want to design.  There are multiple standard setups on f.ds that a player can moderation to gain experience.  The more familiar you are with the way games work, the better you can flesh out your own ideas.

2. Focus on the big picture. Mafia games need to be designed in full.  A designer's decisions about a role, power, etc. need to be made with every other role, power, etc. in mind.  Something that is cool in isolation may interact badly with a different part of the game.  Be ready to kill your darlings.  That one awesome idea you had might have set you on the path for this great setup, but maybe you need to excise that original thread for it to be successful.

3. Balance does not mean fair. Defining balance in the context of mafia games can be difficult.  A designer can think that a balanced game would result in every faction having an equal chance to win.  The reality of game design is that the addition of even a tiny amount of complexity will increase the instability of a game to the point of making it impossible to guarantee a specific win rate.  Just remember that that's okay.  Note: this is a contested topic.

4. Consider game-breaking strategies. Follow-the-Cop is the cautionary tale that all designers must memorize.  If you include roles or mechanics that can guarantee a faction a win, you need to think long and hard about the potential consequences.  A setup being closed does not mean the players won't figure out a way to break your game.  Keep in mind that often a strategy or interaction that causes a large enough swing in the favor of one faction, even without guaranteeing the win, is enough to ruin a game.

5. Ask yourself this question when considering a mechanic/role/power: What percentage of the time will a player choose to do X, given the consequences? Some of the most interesting, awesome roles or powers ever imagined are never included in games because the reward of using it never outweighs the risk.  A standard role that illustrates this important point is the Desperado: essentially a Day Vigilante, but making the wrong choice (shooting town) ends up in not just that townie's death, but your own.  The reward is high (unblockable kill, possibly taking out scum, settling a claim/counterclaim situation, etc.), and the risk is high (two town deaths).  The role has been successfully used in multiple setups.  This concept is often discussed in terms of positive and negative utility to a faction.  There are design choices to be made that include purposefully adding negative utility to a role, power, or faction.  Just be sure it is needed and thought out.

6. Be honest. Not just in ensuring the game you design doesn't stray into Bastard Mafia territory, but make sure your players can trust you.  Some of my own biggest failures in design have been the inclusion of roles or powers that the players honestly did not expect could be included.  Whether it was a recruitment power for scum in Dune or a ninja kill for scum in Modern Community without a complimentary town role, players expressed some level of unhappiness with the design feeling dishonest.  I don't regret the decisions I made, but I include this point for future game designers to consider -- think about the reaction of your players when they learn of a mechanic during or after the game.

7. Consider the open vs. semi-open vs. closed labels. Open  setups are the hardest to create in general, since the amount of balancing issues you have to consider increases exponentially with the complexity of the game.  Semi-open games can often act as templates to use (i.e., asher9++, which creates a different game each time and therefore have lots of replay value. Closed setups are generally the easiest to successfully run because even if you mess up balancing, it's unlikely to matter because people won't figure it out.

8. Provide as much information as you can.. Related to #s 6 and 7, you should endeavor to provide your players with as much information as possible.  While it may feel good, cool, smart, ingenious, or otherwise amazing to hide mechanic/role/setup information from the players, if only for the big reveal moment, it generally makes for a better game if players know what they are doing.  It is a harsh reality to realize, but often, those ah-ha moments only feel good for the designer, and leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the players.

*A Note on Flavor*

If you design a game around a specific flavor, a common theme here at f.ds, remember that others will know the flavor as well as you do.  Always take into consideration the extra care required to pull off thematically chosen or assigned powers, roles, and alignments -- not only for the game breaking possibilities someone with a lot of flavor knowledge could uncover, but also for the disagreements you might face from other die hard fans.  If flavor could give away a key part of the game, ensure there is a workaround, such as provided fake claims, or disclaimers in the setup information to dismiss the possibility.  To be clear: ensure there is no way a player is automatically cleared as town due to flavor name (unintentionally).

I think this is probably a work in progress, and I plan to add to it in the future.  I look forward to my fellow experienced mods adding to this reference guide, which I will reiterate is here not as a rule book, but a resource.

Retired or Antiquated Inside Jokes:

Pulling/Doing an eHunt: Drunk posting, often in a hilarious way. See MVI.

Pulling a Bozzball: Lurking oneself out of a game, from either faction. Generally caused by an apathetic attitude towards the game rather than a planned (or even unplanned!) strategy

Kickball: See Pulling/Doing an eHunt

No Lunch: Started as a phone typo by Axxle in BM3, turned into a joke by the mod and players of that game, means no lynch but tends to result in hungry mafia players.

The "Morgrim Defense": In his first game here (M2) Morgrim self hammered, since then he has raised his meta as someone who is always just a bit crazy and always seems super scummy. The Morgrim defense is that crazy Morgrim is town Morgrim. This forum has not yet seen scum Morgrim*.

Pulling an Insomniac: Depending on context either, having the right lynch and talking yourself out of it and into a town lynch, or as an IC voting for someone you think as town in an attempt to catch the hammer...in a game where mafia have day chat.

Mafia Game Threads / Dune 3 (Game Over)
« on: July 25, 2016, 10:18:02 am »
Years have passed.  The events of the past have changed the future in ways no one but Muad'Dib could have foreseen.  Grass grows on the desert planet; Arrakis is transforming.

In the capital, intrigue and deception.  Abomination.  In the desert, a Preacher rails against an unjust government and its crimes against humanity, against the lax ways of the strong Fremen who have laid aside their Stillsuits and waste water without care.

And in one sietch, relatively untouched by politics and war, nine souls debate and wonder about their own future, and the future of the planet.  Where are the worms?  The source of the spice melange has disappeared, and stockpiles -- built up for the good of the sietch -- are slowly being stolen.  Life without spice?  Incomprehensible.

Nine souls desperate for resolution.  Nine who need to find a solution.  An ancient Fremen saying warns "you should never be in the company of anyone with whom you would not want to die."  Nine souls need to be sure of the company they keep.

Can someone who's run games in real life give me some tips?  I'm going to attempt it without the game itself.  I can make pass/fail cards easy enough, and handing out roles I can figure out.

I'm wondering about the revealing spies to each other part, and such.  Does closing eyes really work?

Rick?

Rick, it's me.  Can you hear me?

I know it's been awhile.  I'm sorry.  It's just...since Duane...

Rick, you said you'd turn it on every day at dawn.  I've been in a bad place for awhile now.  I was hoping you might still be checking for me, that you might have some battery left in that radio.

Rick...Rick?

Look, I'm headed your way.  At least, I think so.  I found your camp, outside Atlanta.  I could tell something went wrong.  Found your note, so I started down the highway, but you couldn't have made it too far.  It was blocked.  Saw some blood, dead walkers.  Tracks into the woods.

I'll keep turning this on until the power runs out on me.  Maybe I can find you, or your family.

Morgan out.

The following is a definitive list of definitions for roles and role modifiers used by ashersky in his games.  Any role or modifier in his games will adhere to the matching definition found in this thread.  If the role or modifier is not defined in this thread, you should ask for clarification from the mod.

Quote
Glossary:

Active - means a role or modifier does not function unless the player chooses to use it.
Mode - refers to whether a role or modifier is active or passive and night or day.
Modifier - a thing that changes a role.
Non-targeted - means a role or modifier does not target a player to function.
Passive - means a role or modifier automatically functions regardless of player desire.
Role - a given player's part in a mafia game, generally encompassing any actions that player may take.
Targeted - means a role or modifier must target a player to function.

Roles:

Bus Driver

A role that targets two players, causing all other targeted actions to affect the other player.
Example: A Bus Driver targets Player A and Player B.  All other actions that target Player A now target Player B and vice versa.

--Bus driving requires targeting two players.
--May not self-target.

Mode: This role is active at night.

Cop

A role that targets one player, learning the alignment of that player.
Example: A Cop targets Player A.  The Cop is told the alignment of Player A.

Mode: This role is active at night.

Godfather

A role that, when investigated by a Cop, returns an innocent result.
Example: A Cop targets a Mafia Godfather.  The Cop receives a Town result.

Mode: This role is passive at all times.

Townie

--Townies have no powers, night or day.
--Townies are always town.

Mode: This role is passive at all times.

Back-Up

A role that inherits the power of a specific role of the same alignment when that role dies.
Example: A Town Cop is lynched during the day.  A Back-Up inherits that player's ability to investigate.

--This role is often modified by the "Universal" modifier.
--This role is informed which role it inherits.
--For stylistic purposes, this role may include the inherited role in the name, or use specific flavor names.
Examples: Back-Up Cop or Deputy, Back-Up Doctor or Nurse, Back-Up Vigilante

Mode: This role is passive at all times.

Role Modifiers:

Bulletproof

--When applied to a role, it stops the first kill attempt on that role.
Example: A Bulletproof Townie is shot by the mafia at night.  That shot fails and the Townie survives.

--Can only be applied to a role.
--Is non-targeted.
--Does not have a game phase limitation.
--Only works once per game phase.
--The player is not informed when Bulletproof functioned.
--If the first kill attempt is modified by Strongman, Bulletproof will fail to stop it.

Mode: This modifier is passive at all times.

Commonly modified roles: Townie, Goon, Serial Killer
Related Modifiers: Lynchproof, Deathproof

Ninja

--When applied to a role, masks the targeting portion of that role.
Example: A Ninja Roleblocker targets Player A.  Player A is still affected by the Roleblocking, but the Ninja Roleblocker did not target Player A.

Mode: This modifier is passive at all times.

Commonly modified roles: Goon
Related Modifiers: Strongman, Hidden

Random

--When applied to a role, that role targets at random.
Example: A Random Vigilante takes her action at night.  That shot's target is randomly decided.

--Random targeting is done with random.org.
--Random actions interact normally with all other actions after the random target has been selected.

Mode: This modifier is passive at all times.

Commonly modified roles: Vigilante, Cop, Doctor
Related Modifiers: Hidden, Triggered

Vanilla

--When applied to a role, removes ability to take any day or night action.
Example: A Vanilla Roleblocker would be unable to roleblock, or take any action, at night.

--May be applied by another role, such as a Vanillaizer.
Example: A Vanillaizer targets Player A, who is a Roleblocker.  That player becomes a Vanilla Roleblocker, losing the ability to Roleblock.

--Is often used redundantly with the role "Townie."

Mode: This modifier is passive at all times.

Commonly modified role: Townie

X-Shot
