Are there any Dominion themes or mechanics (aside from Potions) that you wouldn't consider ever using again or is it all fair game for future expansions?

EDIT- my original idea didn't work as intended, so I'm using this instead.

Old version:
$4 - Night Vendor
Treasure - Night
If its your Night phase, +1 Buy, +$3 and you may buy cards this Night phase. Otherwise, +$1

Man, I made a throne room variant a long time ago and I'm happy with it, so I don't feel like making another one. But it's not eligible for this contest because I've posted it on fds before...

Where does it say that? I read the rules before submiting my entry and didn't see that. I first posted my entry 2 or 3 years ago  :-\

Simple enough, but I think it would be interesting deciding when to trash it.

I've never enjoyed playing Salvager, and it didn't seem to fit the theme of Seaside anyways. Ransacker replaces it and would be (I think?) the first duration trasher.

I picked up Renaissance this week week and I loved it! I've always been a fan of the simpler sets, my favorite being Seaside and my wife's being the Base set, so getting a new expansion somewhere around that complexity has been fun for us. You said in the secret history that expansions have gotten too complex and that this one was made intentionally simple. Where do you think future expansions will fall on the complexity scale?

The problem with trashers like Vigilante or Tax Collector on top is that I doubt the top 5 cards would run out on a regular basis.

That's a good point. I want to keep the essence of the card, but have it worth buying even if your ultimate goal isn't emptying the pile. Thoughts?

Tax Collector
Night - $4
Choose two: +2 Coffers, or trash a card you have in play, or trash an action from the supply.

The bit about gaining Dutchies is there to help you get VP while trying to empty 3 piles.

_____________
I updated Tax Collector, the old card was:
Quote
Tax Collector
Night - $3

+ 1 Coffers
Choose one: Trash a card you have in play, or trash an action from the supply.

Can someone please sticky this topic?

I can't believe it hasn't been yet. Seriously, if we want this part of the forum to be as active as possible this NEEDS to be stickied.

This was a challenge was a tricky one!

The idea here is to make make the worst card on the board (or at least one that works poorly with their strategy) into gained junk for the opponent. It may even be a card that works well with your strategy, so you can choose to gain it.

Note the original concept could add a 3rd ox to the yoke to make a herd, but it wouldn't be as clean and doesn't fit the rules of this contest.

Problem: How does this interact with Treasures that give variable $ such as Bank or Philosopher's Stone? You have to play them to calculate their value, so would they give no Bootleg tokens at all?

You're right, thanks. I changed it to only trashing Coppers, Silvers and Golds. Its the least confusing and least wordy way I could think of to fix it.

(Edited to fix a mistake on card)

BOOTLEG TOKENS - Whenever another player gains a card costing up to $4, you may spend a bootleg token to gain a copy of that card. You can only use one bootleg token for each card gained.

The flavor here is that you're paying the bootlegger to steal things for you. The more you pay him, they more he will steal for you.

Its obviously inspired by Smuggler (a personal favorite of mine), except its actually more of a remodeler that you have to wait for and don't have a lot of control over.

Does this work with the rules of the game? Do unused actions disappear when you enter the buy phase?

While we're talking about art, why is the art for Ruined Village a ruined looking Walled Village? That was a promo so the vast majority of Dominion players will never have played the card and they won't make the connection. Why not, you know... just a ruined version of Village?

I'm buying my brother Dominion for his birthday. I can buy him the 2nd edition or for about the same price I can buy him the 1st edition and give him the update pack (I have an extra one i'll never use). So the decision is kind of whether or not to give him the old cards for free. The extra variety would be nice but are they so bad that it would be better to not give them to a new player at all?

Its always interesting to me to see the little differences in playgroups. I'm not surprised most people don't play like this and wouldn't want to. We like it though, it adds an interesting element of interaction to what is a mostly non-interactive game. For us, lying about what was bought is not allowed, nor is playing while someone is not at the table. We don't pile count often, but both players will know the count if we do. When I play with other people I don't sneak anything, but I don't announce what I'm buying either. I don't know the official rules on that, but I don't feel like its cheating.

If my wife is busy shuffling, or looking at her cards, or otherwise not paying attention I'll play my turn fast so I can buy a provence or attack card before she notices. She does the same. That's what you get for not paying attention! Do you guys do this IRL games?

Dominion General Discussion / Would you trash an estate worth 2VP?
« on: April 11, 2018, 12:46:01 am »
Just a though experiment...

If your starting estates were worth 2VP would still chapel them? What if they were worth 2.5VP? or 3VP? Obviously it would depend on the board, but in an average game at what point would you not trash them?

For what its worth I LOVE those kinds of cards, they are my favorites. But I can certainly see why some people don't.

I looked into buying Guilds/Cornucopia and places want $70 for it! Must be out of print for some reason? I'll grab it when the price comes back down, thanks for everyones suggestions!

Donald, most sets have one of two cards like council room that help your opponents in some way, but never too many in one set. Would too many of these cards in one set be a problem for gameplay, or otherwise be unpopular, or is it just one of those things Dominion hasn't done?

24
Thanks for the replies! Special thanks to pops for your insight on each card. If I do this I won't bother with Pasture or Cursed Gold. I know it seems weird that she won't be interested in complex cards, but normally we play yahtzee or checkers or other boring games, so this is still a huge step up.

We have the Base game + update packs, Intrigue, Seaside and Prosperity and have used maybe 90% of the cards. For a bit we tried fan cards but they could be frusteratingly unbalanced so we don't anymore. We'll get guilds / cornacopia, and hinterlands and probably use a lot of the cards. Those aren't all simple but do look easy to understand. After that I'm thinking we'll have to combine sets a little.

25
My wife loves Dominion but hates complex or weird cards, she loves the simplicity of the base game and the further we go from that the less she likes it. Which means we will never play with a lot of the newer cards. That stinks but it is what it is. I've been wondering if I could take some of the Heirlooms and split piles and buy more of them so as to make whole kingdom piles with them. Would any of them be overpowered? Would any of them be terrible and never get bought? These are the ones I'd consider doing it to -

Goat, Pasture, Pouch, Cursed Gold, Lucky Coin
Plunder, Patrician, Emporium, Settlers, Bustling Village

Thoughts?
