I once tried, when trash Exile instead. Did not work due to TfB like Salvager or Forge. This has the same problem.

Cards like Fortress, Trail, and Lich are in the game, so Eternal Return with TFB should be fine.

The one exception could be with Provinces, as you could mill the pile very quickly.  Maybe Eternal Return could include a “costing up to $6” clause like what Shaman has.

Edit: Regarding the pile out combo with Watchtower, that’s definitely a bigger issue than TFB issue.  But there are other degenerate pile outs, like Procession and most gainers, or Sculptor and any cost reduction (especially Inventor, from the same expansion). Of course comparing Eternal Return with such busted combos probably isn’t a good starting point.
Thanks for the feedback. I have now changed Eternal Return to work only on non-Victory cards, which I think is more interesting (it incentivizes players to prioritize Copper trashing because Estates can still be trashed once Eternal Return activates).

I think Watchtower is a single, somewhat degenerate combo (well Siren has a similar issue, but only for its own pile), but it's fine because it still only works after Prophecy activation, and it doesn't do anything to help you win on its own.

This feels way way too strong. If Samurai has to be a 6$ action, Endless Chalice a Loot and Key have its limitations. This by comparison 1. scales, 2. is cheap. The fact that it occasionally resets and falls back into your deck is no problem, and often you have a deck that can handle a lot of treasures. If you don't play actions this gets up to $5. Then if you play one each other turn (which only requires you to have three of them) you will be getting between $9 or $12 a turn (for only three $3 cards and a handsize every other turn). Any trashing, draw or +buys make this even more busted.
You're absolutely right, I have now nerfed it by switching the timing of putting the token and getting $ so it's slower now. Also increased the cost to $4.

I actually read it as at most three, because the two from choices, replace the original town, neighbors, if I understood correctly.

This game now has some flavor! It is based on the biggest board game convention in the world from which I will probably mod part of this game.
Cool. What are your board game specialities?
I enjoy games that enable engine-building (not surprising given where we are here), I also like coops. Currently I'm playing through a Frosthaven campaign and that's a lot of fun. Most of the games I play are pretty strategic but I also have a soft spot for extremely wacky and stress-inducing real-time stuff like Captain Sonar or Space Alert, though I don't manage to bring those to the table very often.

Is there a clear set of rules around communication by a dead Restless Spirit? It wouldn't be difficult to set up a "Blink if yes" type system, which I imagine is not allowed. But if someone makes a case, and then the RS votes, they're pretty clearly agreeing with the case, and potentially confirming the parts of the case that involve them.
Yeah, good point. I have nerfed the role a bit and limited the number of post-death votes to 10 total, so any use for additional communication comes at a significant cost.

Double-Stack the Deck is a semi-open standard setup based upon the Stack the Deck setup

There will be a total of twelve players, consisting initially of:
2 Mafia Goons
1 1-shot Bulletproof Traitor (Mafia Aligned)
7 Vanilla Town
2 Town Neighbors

Role Modification

During pre-game, both the 2 Mafia players and the Traitor each have 48 hours to select which (if any) of the modifications they want to their team. A maximum of two modifications may be selected for the Mafia, and up to two modifications may be selected by the Traitor.

Mafia options
  • Mafia Goon becomes Mafia Watcher
  • Mafia Goon becomes Mafia Roleblocker
  • Mafia Goon becomes Mafia Neighbor and one Town Neighbor becomes Vanilla Town
  • Mafia learns the Traitor's identity

Traitor options
  • Traitor becomes 1-shot Exile-proof
  • Traitor becomes Redirector
  • Traitor becomes Neighbor, one Town Neighbor becomes Vanilla Town
  • Traitor learns the Mafia's identity

Town has one modification to start that is randomly selected from the list below. For each modification that is selected by the Mafia, Town gains an additional role as well. Similarly, for each modification that is selected by the Traitor, Town also gains an additional role. Roles are guaranteed to be different, except that the roles selected by the Mafia modifications may be the same as the roles selected by Traitor modifications.

Town options
  • Town becomes Tracker
  • Town becomes Nightchat Cop
  • Town becomes Rolestopper
  • Town becomes Restless Spirit
  • Vanilla Town becomes Town Neighbor

Each role modification for Town (except for Town Neighbor) may affect each Town player with equal likelihood, i.e. Town Neighbors could also become Watchers. However no two modifications will be applied to the same player.

Clarifications

  • At the beginning of the game all town aligned players receive a "Vanilla Town" role. Once mafia has selected their abilities all town roles go out. This prevents claims of "received roles before/after mafia modifications".
  • There is no recruitment mechanic; the Traitor will never be a part of the Mafia night chat
  • Mafia modifications are applied before and independent of Town modifications; i.e. a player originally assigned Town neighbor may be turned into Vanilla Town by a Mafia modification and subsequently into a Town Tracker (or even a Town Neighbor again).
  • Depending on the modifications selected, there may be 2, 3 or 4 Neighbors. If there are 4 Neighbors, they will by randomly split into two Neighborhoods each containing 2 players.
  • The Neighborhood is only open at Night. Night 0 will last for 24 hours after the selection of modifications is complete. During this time, the Neighborhood is open.
  • Flips for both town and scum contain the full role, including all modifications (though Traitor knows Mafia / Mafia knows Traitor is not a role modification and thus will not show in a flip)

This game runs a semi-open normal setup based on Stack the Deck, see below. It is designed for 12 players.

Flavor is based on the Spiel des Jahres board game award given out at the board game convention Essen Spiel.

General rules

Changes to the usual rule sets are marked in olive.

The Golden Rule:


Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun!  Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for any mafia game on this site.  If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play. Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.

1. General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote information (either real or fabricated) from any game-related source other than the thread you are posting in. This means no quotes from PMs and no quotes from QTs in the main thread or in another QT. Paraphrasing is acceptable. If you are unsure whether a post is legal, please ask the moderator before posting.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings and the QTs specifically designed for this purpose.
3. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

2. Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. Day phases will last 5 days, Night lasts at least 48 hours.
2. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for an exile to occur prior to deadline.
3. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
4. Once a player is exiled the game enters twilight until the mod locks the thread; all players including the one who was exiled may continue to post during twilight.
5. If the deadline is hit without a player reaching the majority of votes, there will be no exile.
6. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
7. Please submit vote revocations Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
8. You may Vote: No Exile - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without an exile.
9. If the game goes on for 3 days and 3 nights without an exile or night kill, town wins.
10. Once you are killed (either via exile or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in Discord threads. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent (unless their role states otherwise).
11. If the thread is locked, you may not post.  Threads can be locked for various reasons, but no matter what the reason, you may not post.  The mod may forget to lock the thread, but if they say it is locked, it is still locked.

3. Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, olive text is reserved for the mod.  No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please discuss this in your role QT.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued upon request after 24 hours of no activity.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 2 times is subject to replacement under rule 3.9 without further notice.
6. Please do not discuss ongoing games, it can unintentionally affect the other game. Do not discuss this game in any thread that is not directly related to it.
7. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, which may include modkill(s) if needed.
8. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging. Players who fail to post for 48 hours without an announcement, or fail to post for 24 hours repeatedly, risk being subject to replacement and/or being modkilled without further notice.
9. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread.  A request to /out must only be done via a post in the role QT. Please do not use this as a manipulation technique.  (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request). Requests to /out are final once submitted. There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed. Whether your request to /out will lead to replacement or a modkill is up to the mod's discretion.

I said it for this purpose, but there was uh some real frustration mixed in. Despite being teammates and both playing our roles in our interactions, I didn't really enjoy what faust said. And being exiled shortly after when I thought I still had 36 hours to put my case together was kind of sucky.
Sorry if I acted in a way that made you not enjoy the game.

I too would have hoped that your claim would go down better. It didn't unfortunately, and I don't think anything you could have said would have made a difference. When people already scumread you they don't tend to read your cases in good faith.

I was trying to give you some sort of out by giving you the opportunity to present some sort of partner narrative, but it seemed you were insistent on antagonizing me. There was some real frustration on my end as well.

Is it correct that neither the town nor the mafia win condition interacts with the (guaranteed to exist) third party? That pretty severely limits what the third party could be.

Also /out, the delayed flip mechanic doesn't sound fun to me.

That's a great idea! :D But I think it will usually be rather weak since you can't use any +$ or +buy generated by the Actions played at Night. The below-the-line text only allows you to return from Night phase to the Action phase in the rare case when there's also a Night gainer in the kingdom (Changeling would be a strong combo). Otherwise you can only return from the Buy phase to the Action phase upon buying Eclipse, so there's no synergy with its on-play effect.
Eclipse turns every Action gainer into a Night gainer though, that's the synergy.
