Weekly Design Contest #228: Feature Creep



For this week's contest, design a Kingdom card that has at least 4 non-labeling types.
So no types that mark a card as part of a split pile or collection of cards, such as Knight, Clash or Castle. Additionally banned are Traveler, Loot, Ruins, Reward and Prize.
You may only use official types.
Your entry may encompass only one card, though you may use official non-Supply cards.

Contest closing and judging will most likely take place on the on the 28th or 29th.

Warrior Monk
- Action - Duration - Attack - Omen
+1 Sun and +1 Action
Each other player discards down to four cards in hand.
At the start of your next turn, +2 Cards.

Notes: A less onerous Warlord variant. It shares part of its name with Warrior but has Soldier’s attack (edit: now Sword’s attack). Hopefully a good Teacher can be a Champion and clear up the confusion.

Anyone know what the correct order is for these four types? :-)

So the following types are all ok?
  • Action, Treasure, Victory, Reaction, Night
  • Attack, Command, Duration, Gathering, Reserve, Shadow
  • Doom, Fate, Liaison, Looter, Omen
Have I missed any?

(BTW the following is not my entry, just a silly attempt to get as many types as possible on a plausible-looking legible card. I managed 13, everything but Reaction, Command and Shadow :) )



Update: added Reaction and Shadow, though it's beginning to scrape the limit of legibility

How long will it be until the feasters get what's coming to them? Well probably about 5 meals. And what's coming to them may well be a Kind Emperor.

Here's my submission: a slow attack gold gainer that can speed up and help you conquer new lands in multiplicity.

Each other player with at least 4 cards in hand discards a Treasure (or reveals they can't). Choose one: Put this on your tavern mat, or at the start of your next turn, gain a Gold to your hand.

When you gain a Victory Card, you may call this for +1 Buy, +$3.

Choosing between gaining another Gold or getting extra money and gains after your next Province can be a hard call, which may cause AP, but it is reason to gauge your deck and has a high skill cap.

I've submitted an earlier version of this card to another contest a while back, but it's changed since then.

It's really difficult to design a simple card with 4 types! This one's much more complex than I'd like.

This thing really wants you to play it. That's an Omen card for you. Unlike most Omen cards, there isn't a lot of turn to go around after activating the Prophecy, though. So maybe it's not as good to be the first mover for certain Prophecies. It's got a couple of other weaknesses besides, but good luck skipping it.

After a couple failed attempts at an Action - Attack - Duration - Reaction card that used duration to set aside debt for a turn, I set my eyes on Action - Duration - Command - Victory. Decided on Castle Lord (like Overload or Captain), and thought it would be cool if it could synergize with Castle cards. Unfortunately the best interaction was already taken by Territory. I thought about tweaking Territory’s text (e.g., 1 VP per 2 differently named Victory cards), but ultimately kept the same text due to text size constraints (and it’s just better). The Duration aspect is not really necessary (aside from getting me to 4 types), but it does help to blunt the strength of the card. So in the end, Castle Lord is a beefed up and delayed Band of Misfits plus a Territory. Have considered raising price to (6){6}.

Non-terminal Haggler for $6 is a bargain, but it has some downsides. It can't gain itself (only action cards), it's terrible at gaining cheap cards (since it guarantees ruins will be in the kingdom, you will often be forced to take one), and your opponents Bargains can cause you to take a lot of junk. It's still a pretty powerful card though.

Or Discard the top Boon until you discard one that doesn't give +$1, which each other player may then recieve.

4$ Cost Shadow - Victory - Doom - Fate

So many types, but you still can't play it...

This is a cheaper Duchy, which will always be at the bottom of your deck, but when you draw it, you must choose whether it hurts you or helps all your opponents. Since shadow cards have unique backs, on-draw effects finally work. yay.

So if I play a Militia on my turn and you discard and react with this, then I play a Fishing Village, do I have to discard a card to that Militia? Or do I discard a card for my Fishing Village? Or do I not discard a card at all?

Can a card with multiple types count as multiple types when put back? Or it can count for only one of it’s multiple types? I presume it’s the latter.

I may gauge this wrong, but in a high enough concentration this feels much stronger than Smithy in Big Money.
