Weekly Design Contest #227: Shadows

As the new expansion will soon be out, let’s do something with the new card type Shadow. Keep in mind that the subtype is not restricted to Actions. Bonus point for funky type combos (e.g. Shadow-Reaction, pure Shadow or perhaps even a landscape) and nice flavour&art.

Action - Shadow 5$
+2 Cards
You may put a card from your discard pile on top of your deck, and another on the bottom.
-
You can play this from your deck as if in your hand.

Starting out simple with a Shadow Smithy variant. Has the Sibyl thing of placing cards on top of or at the bottom of your deck. Returning one card requires returning both, I hope that's clear. Placing cards from your discard pile back into your deck interacts nicely with the shadow mechanic and lets you plan your shuffles. Sometimes a shadow Smithy is all you want though, and that is plenty strong enough in itself.

Edit: corrected the card cost.

Reacting with a card from the bottom of your deck could be interesting, but pure Shadow seems harder, except if you want an unplayable card at the bottom of your deck every shuffle? Okay, let me try anyways.

Here is my entry - multiple-type card that is like a half Stowaway half Blackcat modified into a Shadow type. While i was at it, i had this cost debt too.
I started with some Shelter - Shadow cards, but this is likely the better entry.

Shaded cards can turn any card into a shadow (although it doesn't make any of them draw an extra card). They come with 20 sleeves, which you can slide the card into to give it a different back. Alternatively you can just place it in your deck face up (Obviously DX would never create 20 sleeves each box just for a card, but I thought it was a fun idea for a fancard).

Guaranteed to hit on your second shuffle. Easy and cheap source of , especially if you can redraw the Treasure (or if you're not relying on Treasure econ), but maybe don't clump too many on the bottom of your deck. You need the Actions, and probably don't want to draw into this many terminal stop cards. Oh, and Capitalism loves this one (just play your other Treasures first).

Monopoly - $4
Event/Action/Shadow

Gain this.
-
When shuffling this, put it onto the bottom of your deck. Any player may buy this from your deck.
___________________________________

If you have no cards in your deck, gain a card.
-
You can play this from your deck as if it is in your hand.

Monopoly is a single double-sided card that is set up as an Event. The landscape side acts as the back once it enters a player's deck.

FAQ:
- Monopoly, when set up, is not considered part of the Supply, and thus cannot be gained by e.g. Workshop, or be returned to the Supply.
- Monopoly can only be bought from its starting setup as an Event or from a player's deck, but not from play, hand, discard etc.
- You can buy this from your own deck, thereby moving it into your discard pile.
- This is an Action and thus considered a card, so it is affected e.g. by Bridge's cost reduction.

Fairies - $3
Night - Shadow
Choose one: +3 Cards; or put up to 3 cards from your hand onto your deck.
____________________________________________________________________
(During your Night phase) You can play this from your deck as if it is in your hand.

Fairies functions as a backwards sifter and a failsafe for drawing dead actions. By itself it can could enable you to play more Night cards that turn, or top deck the cards you didn't play that turn. With multiple Fairies, you can draw up cards from your deck, top deck any good cards you may have drawn, and leave the rest for Clean-up to take care of.

FAQ:
 - Fairies does not let you play the actions or treasures you draw during your Night phase (but you can top deck them if you have another Fairies in your deck  ;)).

Sorry for the GIANT image haha.

edit: thanks to faust I now understand how the mechanic actually works, so I'm changing the card. I think a smithy you can play from anywhere in your deck is obscenely powerful, so I've made the condition harder to satisfy to reflect this. I think even this version is on the stronger side.

Flavor-wise, well the guy is such an obsessive stalker that he needs at least four different targets before showing up for his job.

You may play or react with this as if it were in your hand.
Backside: When shuffling, put this on the bottom of your deck.

$5 - Action - Shadow
+$1
+1 Buy.
Gain a Horse.
Discard any number of cards for +$1 each.
-
You may play this as if it were in your hand.

Kappa: an Village shadow card
Version 2

Quote
Kappa
Action-Shadow-Reaction
$3

Discard two cards from your hand. If you did, +3 Actions.

When you gain, trash, or discard this, put this or a card from your hand at the bottom of your deck.

You can play this as if in your deck just like any other card. I thought having to write it out on the card is unnecessary.

Kappa: an Village shadow card with a cost.

Quote
Kappa
Action-Shadow-Reaction
$3

+2 Actions
Trash a card from your hand. If it costed $2 or less, gain a curse.
-
When this enters your hand, play it and get 2 Debt.

The problem is that, well, why would you ever want this card in your deck? Seems about as strong as Necropolis.

(Noting that I said this thinking Shadow cards have to be played from the top of your deck, so the card is relatively stronger than I thought, but actually even with it how it really works, it still seems weak.)

My Submission:

Quote
Private Shrine • {7} • Action - Shadow
Trash any number of cards from your hand. +{1} per 2 cards trashed (round down).

You can play this from your deck as if in your hand.

Private Shrine is a very powerful trasher, and priced as such. If you open with it, it'll wipe out your entire opening payload. The Shadow ability lets it trash whenever you want, and always hit the worst cards in your deck. But if you're trashing more than one, it'll add even more Debt (something certain to happen when you first gain it). Unlike Donate, you can keep using it if you're getting junked. Like other trashers, it does stick around as a useless card, but if you have a spare Action (and remember to use it), you can play it and trash nothing before it gets in your way.

Swordsmith
Action - Shadow ($4)

Gain card costing up to $4. If your deck is empty, +1 Action.
——
You may play this from your deck as if in your hand.

FAQ: The discard pile is not counted for the bonus effect. (otherwise it would never trigger lol)
The Swordsmith likes working the graveyard shifts, so you get a nice bonus if he’s the last one out.

Tuna! If a Fishmonger's a Shadow, gotta have some Shadow fish too. That fish is so fresh, it's practically jumping out of your deck. Tuna feels a little less Shadowey than other Shadow cards. Maybe you actually want to draw this for a coupla tokens. Or maybe you need the money now.

This is strictly better than Plunder (ignoring the Shadow type and just playing it from your hand).
The Shadow option is rather weak in comparison, essentially just a Peddler (with Shadow flexibility added).

It's definitely not. The main strength of Plunder is that you can reveal it to Encampments.

+2 Coffers, +1 VP is very strong as a Treasure, but is it busted relative to other 5$s? I don't think so. And yeah the shadow option is very weak, but is that a bad thing? I also don't think so. I actually love this design; I think it's cool to have a card where the shadow is the sidestory. It's still a big enough factor to change the card a lot.

I think now this is a pretty strong design! The effect is very weak, but having access to +Actions on demand is so huge that you probably still want it.

I think the main problem is that it's super easy to just buy Tunas and Provinces, and that's not the most exciting thing ever. Plunder prevents that by having you already lean into building an engine via Encampments.

True if that strategy is competitive with engines. Which it probably isn't? Since, like, engines are pretty good.

Reminder that Tuna lives at the bottom of your deck, so you're going to have to draw down to it to get the tokens. This is great if you're drawing your deck, because it stays on the bottom without hindering your draw, but if you're playing Tuna money, it's going to be missing the shuffle a lot unless you Peddler it (which I expect is often a good choice).

I'd also like to bring attention to Collection. Collection is obviously mega busted, but well it seems there's quite a large range of power levels we can have for ⑤ Treasures. I expect that Tuna can make the top half of ⑤ Treasures, but it's got friends.
