Weekly Design Contest #222: Take Five



For this week's contest, design a card or card-shaped thing that has +5 Cards or a functionally equivalent wording in its text. You may incorporate any official components or mechanics. Your entry must encompass only a single card or card-shaped thing.

Functionally equivalent here means, it behaves exactly as +5 Cards would. That is, the number of cards drawn is exactly five, always and every time, except, of course, when not enough cards are in the deck and discard pile to be drawn. An example would be Guide with its "draw 5 cards" clause. Thus drawing up to X cards or looking at more than 5 cards an choosing 5 to put in hand are not permitted. Also not allowed is splitting the draw, i.e having multiple + Cards all adding up to +5 Cards. On that note, don't try anything cheeky like splitting higher + Cards into one +5 Cards and something else, without a very good reason.
That isn't to say, the hand size must always be affected in the same way as by a plain +5 Cards. You may include discarding, trashing, playing of cards from hand etc. The +5 Cards may be nested in a choose or conditional clause etc.


Although plain text entries will be accepted, I encourage you to submit your cards as images with card-art.

The contest will close some time on Thursday next week. I plan to post the judgment on the same day. I am aiming for a turnaround time for this week's contest of 7 days, thus the time you have to submit your entries is not quite that.

I don’t see the mitigation. Sure, min-forging two cards into a $7 is a possibility but giving up a $3 and a $4 respectively a $2 and a $5 (and above all the chance to play them in this turn) is always a steep price.

So yeah, the interaction in this split pile is a bit low.

I’d simply run with a straightforward Duchy interaction (make it simpler, you don’t need that Coffers thing). Might still be too strong (you draw far more than with Encampment) but then again it is a $7.

Discard, revealed: one Gold, or two Silvers, or three cards. If you discarded at least two Actions, +1 Action. You may trash one Treasure discarded.

Notes: Inspired by Pooka, Marquis, and Witch’s Hut. It’s versatile and will probably generate interesting choices about what to discard, whether to get it early to use as a Copper trasher, and whether to gain Golds to increase its drawing potential.

I'm not sure on balance, but i don't see myself buying the first version, but i'd buy the second version.

Trying to take a Royal Blacksmith-esque card and make it different enough to coexist with it.

It's a much cheaper cost, but the drawback is a lot steeper, forcing you to discard ALL treasures and other Noble Blacksmiths. And it comes with an on-gain "penalty." What will be fun is trying to make the penalty actually work for you. Perhaps you buy the Heroic Blacksmith as a cheap Platinum, planning to trash it for benefit later. Or perhaps you really don't need treasures at all, and you treat this like a big sifter to get to your actions, and accept the annoying Copper and Treasure as cards to sift away or trash later.

I'm open to feedback, specifically whether it's necessary to "gain a Copper" with the treasure. I'd consider making it at $5 and not having it self-discard or having it gain a copper. Lots of ways to iterate this, let me know if you have strong opinions.

oh damn, I actually even checked for this before choosing the name. But I think I searched for "pathfinder" and then decided to go with "pathfinding" instead.
