With these, a collection of individual level codes is less necessary, but the original modified original post is below:

Code: [Select]
F.DS Levels:

I don't know how much you guys like throwing things at your TV, but in case it's a lot, I made some levels for you:

Wall Jumps: E1C9-0000-007A-CC92
Spinning Saws: B603-0000-007A-CDB9

This one is just a silly idea I had, if you didn't like those two because they were unreasonably hard, you still might like this one:

Race the Spiny: B87F-0000-007A-CFC4

Okay, Goomba Lair: F7F9-0000-0069-35B0. It's my first course, uses nothing but the intial set of items, and any feedback would be nice (provided it isn't Joseph2302 saying "it sucks" and nothing else)

After looking at the feedback people have given, I've updated Goomba Lair. New code is 246F-0000-0069-C928

Why did I even do this? It was an idea I had before the game even came out, and wanted to try and make it work. I kinda succeeded. Sadly Bowser doesn't move quite like I'd hoped, so some bits can be frustrating because of AI.

Bowser Escort Mission: 4C57-0000-0081-CBAE

Bullet Bill Blaster Surprise: 1918-0000-00A3-FB92

What's inside the Bullet Bill Blaster? I can't wait to find out! Unless it's Magikoopas. Then I'm happy to wait to find out. This course is similar in style to my first course (Goomba Lair), with a single main theme being explored (hey what can I do with Bullet Bill Blasters), but hopefully a few interesting secrets, challenges and the like.

I got the itch just now to make something. Two or three hours later and we have Bowser Jr's Mole Armada: 3D8D-0000-00C9-F3C8

I expect this will be fairly easy for most people here (I've aimed for easier difficulty than my last two levels), although there's a few places you might get hit or fall, so you could still die if you're not careful.

Super Spinies: 8F29-0000-0040-2DD1

My goal was to make a level that you might see in a Mario game. The theme is giant Spinies. There are secrets to be found; some are obvious and some are less obvious. Feedback is very welcome!

Chomp Caverns: B929-0000-0058-B6EF

Another traditional-style Mario level. Medium-Hard difficulty. Lots of goodies to find!

Flying Fish: DEAC-0000-006E-8BBE

It's a athletic-style level with a slow autoscroll. The primary theme is Cheep Cheeps with wings. Cheep Cheeps don't interact with much in Mario Maker—you can't make something ride around on them, for instance—so it was tough thinking of interesting things to do. Anyway, I think the result is worth a play or two. There's a choice between the low road (through a short underwater sub-area) and the high road (bouncing off Cheep Cheeps) near the middle of the stage.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW:

So Mario Maker finally released Friday, and my whole weekend has basically been playing around with it. My one big gripe is how popular "non-levels" are in the Course World -- almost every top level is either a roller coaster where you win by pressing no buttons, ascii art, a collection of one of every powerup, or just complete chaos. It's harder than I'd like to find playable, "Mario style" levels.

At least you can share level codes with people, though. I've finished two levels so far, if anyone wants to give them a try.

"Careful Coin Collection" -- This is a fairly short, kinda puzzly level.

"Platform Gauntlet (Find 3 1ups)" -- This one is more ambitious. The general theme involves riding slow-moving platforms and dealing with enemies/danger without falling off.

If anyone else has made any levels, I'd love to play them also!

Hearthstone / Twitch Streaming and Buying Viewers
« on: March 27, 2015, 03:39:34 am »
So I like watching twitch streamers, especially ones with only a few hundred viewers, so I can actually participate in a discussion (instead of just walls of flying spam). I started watching one half an hour ago, and I was talking in the chat, but other than the streamer responding, no one else was talking to me. Lots of people were posting unrelated, neutral remarks, though. ("Good job/I'll be right back/what was that?/I like it/hey/etc")

It's not like spam is uncommon in twitch, but it was weird that literally nothing seemed related to anything happening on the stream. I started looking at the accounts, and they all were following exactly one account -- the same one, and not the one they were chatting in. My best guess, is they're bots that the streamer paid for, to boost his spot in the page of "most viewed hearthstone streams". I'm frustrated for encouraging someone who would do that, and I asked in the chat how much he paid for the bots. I (obviously) didn't get a response. When someone actually commented on the game, I said something to them in the chat about what was going on, and was banned from the chat channel.

I reported his account and the account all the bots were connected to, but I'm still annoyed. I'm not sure what else to do about it. Just wanted to vent. All account names withheld, of course.

EDIT: "You are permanently banned from talking in STREAM REDACTED."

General Discussion / More Maths That I Could Use Help With
« on: March 16, 2015, 07:56:20 pm »
Okay, so I'm working on a new game, and I'm trying to come up with a formula to figure out how to calculate the expected damage from an attack. The base engine is TacDice, if you've played Sentinel Tactics or Schlock Mercenary. Here's how it works:

The attack rolls a specified number of dice. The attack also lists which numbers automatically miss. For example, a Shotgun attack would roll 5 dice, and any 4s or 6s would "automiss". Then any dice showing less than the range the attack is being made at miss. Then the defender rolls a number of dice. Each defense die can make one attack die miss, if the defense die ties or beats it. Each attack die remaining after all this deals 1 damage.

I'd like to be able to fill in the variables and have something spit out the expected damage, and ideally the shape of the distribution curve. Is this something I can possibly write in Excel, or what would I need to put this together?

General Discussion / Shaggy Dog

Once upon a time, in the ancient deserts of Arabia, lived a wandering  merchant named Ali. One day in his travels, Ali happened upon, along the side of the road, a trunk, buried almost completely in the sand. After an hour of moving the sands, he was able to open the lid of the trunk to reveal its contents. He held his breath in anticipation, and discovered the trunk contained ... But a single, unadorned funerary urn.

Ali cursed his luck, but he resolved that, even the smallest treasure is treasure nonetheless, and took the urn with him. Later that night, he removed the urn from his wagon, and examined it to try and discern its origin. In the process, he began to polish it, and suddenly billowing smoke poured forth from the empty vessel's depths.

Ali jumped back, and the urn clattered to the ground without breaking. From within the smoke emerged a silhouette, which became steadily clearer as the clouds dissipated. "Praise Allah, I thought I would never be released from my confinement!" the figure bellowed, as he emerged, clad in fine silks and with a beard, long and white. "Thank you, sir, for your kind deed! I have been cursed and bound to this wretched urn, as a djinni might be, since the end of my mortal being. By what name may I know you, my lord, until my work for you is complete?"

Ali responded hesitantly. "Ali is my given name, but I confess confusion. I have heard tales of the mighty djinn, but never have I heard of such a being who was anything but hostile to man. And now, you before me, offer me service without explanation, without even introduction?"

The man bowed deeply. "I intended no confusion, friend Ali! I am but a humble being with a humble name; I am known as Benny, as no true djinni am I. I was once a mortal man such as yourself, but I was a man of hubris and pride. All my life I required those whom I should have cared for and loved to do as I bid and pleased, without regard for their happiness. Thusly I am cursed to remain here, tied to this mortal plane, until I can complete my assigned duties."

"How might your curse be broken?"

"In but one way: I must complete provide selfless gifts, of my own accord, to whoever should ask them of me, until my beard grows long enough to reach the ground. To this end, I have been granted greater powers than I ever possessed in my first life, with the cost that I may never use them for my own gain, but only for the benefit of he who might ask of me. This is the price I pay for the life I lived."

"Do you truly repent? You speak as though your curse were but a trifling inconvenience!"

"Ah, but as curses go, what a trifle it is! I have often wanted nothing more than some time to be alone and think, and I have had plenty of that, to be sure. But now that you have released me, I can complete my mission and continue on to the next life! What does your heart desire?"

Ali considered everything the strange man said. "Your claims are fantastical, but I find myself intrigued nonetheless. I wish I could be more certain that this stranger before me was, in fact, telling truths."

"Your merest wish is my command, Ali!" Benny pronounced, and then suddenly, with a jerk of his beard, a mewling arose from behind him. Benny stepped aside to reveal that Ali's wagon had been transformed into a kitten!

"What have you done! Now I will need to purchase a new wagon!" cried Ali.

"Only what you have requested of me, friend. I have proven myself to you, as you wished." And as Benny grinned at Ali, his beard grew inches longer. "And you see, this part is true also -- before long, I will be freed of my curse!"

The next morning, Ali resolved to have Bennie make amends. "Since you have cost me my livelihood, I will require a new one. I wish to be a spice merchant, with wagons laden with exotic and valuable spices from the ends of the earth."

"Of course, friend Ali! Your merest wish is my command!" And with another tug of his beard, a great caravan, filled with every spice known to man and more, appeared from the desert sands. Ali exclaimed with excitement and set off, leading the caravan behind him, with Bennie dashing to catch up, his beard trailing ever longer behind him.

Not an hour later, however, bandits set upon the lavish caravan, intent on pillaging all of value. "Bennie, Bennie! Why are there no guards for this wealth?"

"'Friend' Ali, mighty though I may be, I cannot create man from whence man was not. And as to why I did not relate this to you previously, well... to be quite honest, I find this result much more to my amusement!" Benny laughed, and laughed, as the bandit made off with cask after cask of merchandise.

Ali was incensed. "Well then, 'friend' Bennie, I will have to solve this single-handedly! And to that end, I wish for a mighty blade, with the sharpest edge man can craft, fine enough to cut even hair without pause."

"Your merest wish is my command!" Bennie chortled, and tugged his flowing beard once more, and suddenly, in Ali's hand, there appeared a gleaming blade, as requested: the finest razor Ali had ever seen.

Ali stared at the razor, bewildered, as the bandits left with the last of the last of the goods from the caravan. Bennie broke into unbridled laughter, nearly falling to the ground with amusement. Enraged, Ali screamed and leapt towards Bennie with the razor clenched in his fist. Bennie cried out and covered his eyes, but Ali instead dealt an even more devious blow -- he reached out and with a single stroke, shaved off Bennie's magical beard.

"No!" Bennie exclaimed, and suddenly a great wind kicked up. Bennie was dragged by the tempest back towards the plain, unadorned urn, laying in the sand, overlooked by the opportunistic bandits. "You have doomed me to ever longer servitude, you monster!" And with that, the clean-shaven man was again contained.

The moral of the story?

"A Bennie shaved is a Bennie urned."

General Discussion / How do I even start to solve this math problem?
« on: December 30, 2014, 06:52:13 pm »
Okay, so I'm looking for 8 positive intergers. There are two restrictions:

A: No member of the set of 8 integers is greater than the sum of any other pair of integers in the set. (For example, the set [1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4] is invalid because 1+1<4.)

B: For any two distinct subsets of the set, with a subset being defined as 1-3 integers from the set, the sums of the subsets should not be equal. (For example, the set [10,10,11,13,14,15,16,17] is invalid because 10+17=11+16.)

The examples are invalid in many ways other than the specific ones listed -- it's just that I can't even come up with examples that are only invalid in one way.

Is such a set possible to construct? If so, what is the set that fits these rules with the smallest sum of the whole set?

I'm not even sure where to begin solving this.

Game Reports / Another Coppersmith Board
« on: October 05, 2014, 10:27:51 pm »
http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20141005/log.507f8372a2e6c48a2978b032.1412561637125.txt
Pawn, Coppersmith, Feast, Remodel, Worker's Village, Duke, Library, Mandarin, Nobles, Forge (No Shelters, no Colonies)

(It's been so long, I forget how to do the fancy kingdom display. ._.)

Is Coppersmith the best strategy here? It looked viable to me, and I never get to use Coppersmith, so I went for it. Worker's Village is great because you need actions and buys for Coppersmith, and it gives you both, and Nobles is another half village that's much better than normal when Library is your other draw. I figured Library would work for draw while going off because you can reduce your hand size by playing the Coppersmiths, but that ended up not being relevant because I got enough Worker's Villages that I could use Nobles to draw almost always.

Notable turns:

Turn 6, I have Remodel/Pawn/S/C/C with an empty deck, and I've already got 2 Libraries, so I don't really want to Remodel the Silver. Is there a better play than Remodel Pawn into WV, buy WV?

Turn 11, I pick up 3 Coppersmiths. Turn 12, I get $24 and 8~ buys, but I don't have enough buys to 3-pile (5 Pawns, 0 Worker's Villages were the low piles) so I buy the last 4 Nobles to empty a second pile and put me ahead far enough that even if opponent can empty the Pawns, he'll be behind. Turn 13, I go off again thanks to all the draw from the Nobles and have $30 and many buys. I empty the Estates to three pile.

Other Games / The Concept of "Victory Points"
« on: July 14, 2014, 12:02:32 pm »
Had a discussion over the weekend which we were unable to satisfactorily resolve -- who came up with the idea of "victory points" in board games?

When I say victory points, I mean basically an abstract "currency" that isn't spent like money is, but instead is used as a tally to determine the winner, and is obtained in varying amounts for doing different things in the game, as a way to quantify incomparables. We were trying to come up with the oldest example we could think of, and the oldest we had that definitely qualifies is Outpost (1991), but surely that can't be the first?

Cosmic Encounter, for example, wouldn't count here, because your points aren't quantifying incomparable things; your points are all from doing the same thing.

General Discussion / Steam Group
« on: July 14, 2014, 10:39:49 am »
So I got a new computer recently, and I'm finally getting caught up on all these games I wasn't able to play on my old one. And then Steam goes and has their summer sale, and there's all these Humble Bundles, and basically I'm on Steam forever now. The hard part is actually finding decent people to play online with (as usual), but you guys are pretty cool, right? So I made a Steam Group for Dominion Strategy! ("Take _all_ the liberties!")

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dominionstrategy

I figured since the Hearthstone thing was pretty popular here, this might be convenient for people who play Steam games to coordinate. It's also way easier to manage than Hearthstone's "add everyone from the list" friends list functionality -- you can just join the group.

So what would people want to play on Steam?

Variants and Fan Cards / I love simple cards
« on: January 02, 2014, 09:21:19 am »
I'm always looking for clean, simple dominion cards that haven't been done yet. I was really proud that Garrison won one of the original mini-set design contests, for this reason. Anyways, I was half awake this morning and this idea came to me, and I feel like it's simple enough that someone must have done it somewhere already, right?

Jonesy -- $4

Look at the top four cards of your deck. Discard two, and put the rest in your hand.

Closest comparisons are Oracle, Moat, Smithy. There's no reason this can't cost $4, right?

Game Reports / What would you do here?
« on: June 13, 2013, 10:43:52 am »
I thought this was an interesting kingdom that I played last night live.

Kingdom Cards: Knights, Mint, Highway, Talisman, Philosopher's Stone, Watchtower, Oasis, Warehouse, Menagerie, Courtyard

Potions, No Colonies, No Shelters. Top Knight is +2 Actions.

You open 4/3 from first seat. What's your plan?

I opened Talisman/Courtyard. I played Courtyard on turn 3, putting back my Talisman, and buying a Mint with 5 Coppers, then bought 2 Oases on turn 4. The plan was Highway/Talisman to buy a bunch of Highways, using Warehouse, Oasis, and Menagerie to draw my deck and play 3 Knights every turn. I lucked out that the second Knight was +2 Buys, so I had a couple turns where I got to grab 6 or 9 engine pieces. (I'd Minted a second Talisman on turn 5 or 6.) I ended up winning by a Duchy, having trashed a Province and 2 Duchies at various points out of my opponent's Courtyard Big Money Deck.

This was a ton of fun to build, but I don't think it would work if someone contested it. The Knights especially are super important, and even if you get the +2 Buys Knight, it cna get trashed by another Knight.

General Discussion / Minecraft?
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:34:42 pm »
Well, I used to play Minecraft all the time with some people from another forum which I rarely visit any more. I decided to play it again the other day, only to find out that our server is no more. Is anyone from f.DS playing Minecraft online anywhere? I've always preferred to play with people from somewhere I at least kind of know, instead of just random people who beat me up and take my wood. That way, I can be mad at Ozle in fake real life instead of just fake fake life!

Single-Player always feels suboptimal to me; no one can come see whatever cool dungeon I'm making!

Also I am good at grunt labor, if anyone needs any mind numbing tasks worked on!

Other Games / Terminology
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:08:09 am »
I'm a sucker for terminology. A good word can add so much to a game; Innovation could have just had abilities, but it has dogmas, and that's cool. Ideally a term adds flavor to a game while also being unambiguous within the game, and also being intuitive to a non-player of the game.

So here's where I'm stuck. I'm co-designing a board game. It's as of yet unannounced, and liscensed with an existing IP, so I'm only going to speak in somewhat general terms, but I'm stuck trying to come up with a term.

Some context: this game is a grid-based tactical miniatures game. On a units turn, they get a number of action points that are spent on various actions, but not the same action twice in a turn. One of the actions a unit can take is "move", which allows the unit to move a number of spaces equal to its movement value (varies from unit to unit and turn to turn, but the average units average move is 4 to 5 spaces, and no movement value is greater than 6).

Another action, the one I'm trying to come up with a name for, allows a unit to move up to two spaces regardless of their move value. Originally, this was only useful for moving additional spaces when the unit had already "move"d this turn, since you can't repeat actions, and so we were calling this action "sprint". As the game fleshed out, though, we differentiated this action further by allowing it to move up to two spaces, ignoring any terrain that would hinder movement, like rough terrain, or climbing over a low wall. This was great mechanically, but the problem is that it doesn't feel like "sprint"ing at all, since often units would be assigned this action without being assigned the "move" action first.

It's important mechanically that these actions do what they do, so, for instance, making "move"ing be a prerequisite for "sprint"ing isn't an option. Another thing I should note is that "sprint"ing only let's you avoid effects that make moving into a space more difficult; it doesn't let you avoid any negative repercussions of being in that space. So if a space is full of caltrops, or on fire, "sprint"ing doesn't let you ignore that.

Another note -- "push" has been suggested previously (in the "push it to the limit" sense), but "push" is already defined in this game as one unit moving another unit away from itself.

Anyone have any ideas on a word that would be thematically approporiate and fairly intuitive? I'm stuck.

Variants and Fan Cards / Partnership Dominion
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:44:39 am »
I finally convinced some friends to try this this weekend. What we played was, you sit opposite your partner. The only differences from normal Dominion are:

1) You combine VP with your partner at the end of the game to see which team wins.
2) Attack cards don't affect your partner (even if you would rather they did). It's like your partner has a Lighthouse in play on your turns.

And here's the one that makes it really neat:

3) Any time you would gain a card, your partner gains it instead, to the same place you would have gained it. (Pretend this works; it probably technically doesn't.)

I have no idea exactly what this does to the strategy to the game, which is why I'm excited to try it more. (We only played once; my partner got annoyed with me for opening Moneylender/Steward for him on an engine board.) Random note: You can build an engine that buys VP without the VP clogging the engine, but then the deck that buys parts for the engine loses value and can't buy parts anymore.

I think it's interesting, and if anyone else has ever tried it, I'd love to hear about it. For me, anything is better than 4 player Dominion. ._.

Innovation General Discussion / I'm really confused

FUCK YOU LUCKY NIGGER
YOU A BORING FAGGOT PLAYER

I don't understand. This was what my opponent said to me right before they disconnected on me in this game:

http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/31/game-20130331-180708-1952cc2c.html

I never managed to draw a blue or purple card the whole game! I feel like I was pretty unlucky, in fact. I scored 10 points with Clothing before my opponent mostly blocked me, and I got to use Paper to draw a single [4]. I really don't get why my opponent freaked out on me?

Other Games / Describing Board Games that I don't remember the name of

I played this war game as a kid with modular setup, plastic castles and trees, and cannons, ballistae, and catapults that fired plastic orange balls to knock over your opponent's men and hit their castle's targets.

Dominion Isotropic / The Future of Isotropic
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:19:39 am »

First, I want to thank dougz for all the work he's put into Isotropic over its existence. No more could be asked of anyone that what he has freely given.

Now that Dominion will no longer be hosted by Isotropic, how does the future of Isotropic look? Presumably the site itself will continue to exist (if you've never checked it out, there actually is a site that has nothing to do with Dominion, and Innovation will continue to be played. Are there plans to expand to more games? What else is in Isotropic's future?

Also, what can we, as end users, do to contribute more directly to Isotropic? If memory serves, dougz has declined financial donations in the past, but I'm sure many of us would be willing to donate towards defraying the operating costs of Isotropic. How can we ensure that this end of an era isn't the end for Isotropic?

Actually, he was accepting donations last time and you totally should if you haven't before.

Variants and Fan Cards / Price this Card #2

Home Science Kit - $?
Action

+2VP
Trash this card. If you do, gain a Laboratory from the Laboratory Pile.

(Pretend there's a Laboratory Pile. It has 10 Laboratories in it.)

----------------

One of the most difficult parts of making good custom cards is costing them correctly. There are some good guidelines one can follow (Check out the Dominion Fan Card Creation Guide, by rinkworks), but there's no strict formula that will tell you exactly how much a card should cost. Some cards are worth more than the sum of their parts.

EDIT: For clarification, the +2VP is chips, and the Lab comes not from the supply, but from a separate pile.
