Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest #218: Tokens
« on: May 07, 2024, 08:28:12 am »
I have a few guesses

- Sometimes, complex cards are genuinely worse because they only happen absent a great idea. Like, if you have a unique idea, you make it into a simple card and are done with it. If you don't have a unique idea, you just start tagging on stuff onto a card (and then maybe scrap/re-add/modify) until you sort of have something. This is not always how complex cards are created, but if it is, it may well be justified that they don't do well

- Complex cards have more components and hence more to criticize. Especially relevant if, to whatever degree, you adopt a measure based on how many flaws you can detect rather than the more subjective sense of how excited you are by the card

- When you design a card, understanding it feels like a trivial cost/buy-in compared to the value that the card provides as an idea or if it were/is played with. But if you judge (or even just read other cards) then you have no prior investment into most designs, so trying to get the hang of it can feel like a significant cost. This can create a negative vibe and since everyone secretly decides everything on vibes, that lowers chances significantly

- As a judge, you don't want it to look like anyone can win the contest by force. E.g., say we make a contest and everyone submits a simple design except one person who makes a 5-step traveler line. If you give the win to that person, it sort of looks like you're rewarding the most work rather than the best idea. (This is probably the weakest point though, and in fact high effort cards don't tend to get a lot of upvotes from other people, either.)

It altogether seems like most people primarily like the "oh that's really clean and clever" type cards.

I have the impression that if an individual utilizes sophisticated language in a context where it is unexpected, this behavior will correlate positively with  autism on their end, even if the language they've utilized didn't contain improperly utilized terms.

Very cool! Alas:

(graph was made before this contest started, so it's not judge-specific, seems like a general phenomenon to me)

So I had this short back and forth with a somewhat autistic internet friend and then kept thinking about whether or not it's appropriate/polite to inform them of the social subtext that they clearly missed. But I think there's just no way to do it that doesn't come across as combative

Of course this leads to people not getting training data for social stuff

maybe the better answer would be that you totally can because they wouldn't be offended because they're autistic, but idk if it works like that

I think the right move is to wait a few days and then bring it up in an indirect way

Now I'm so interested in whether there are any autistic people who use LLMs to help with that. I wish I could ask Aella, she would totally not be offended.

I was also curious and copy-pasted the conversation to GPT-4 and asked it to interpret it, but imo it got it wrong. I'm not sure whether that's surprising or not since I'm not sure how much training data there is on that stuff

Mockups:

(This was slightly edited shortly after submission closed bc I realized the "silver produces $1 less" doesn't do anything since you can just play silver first. Feel Free to disqualify it because of that. Don't bother judging the older version.)

Have i been posting too much here or adding way too many notes on my thought process on my card?

nah there is no such thing as too much engagement in this forum. WDC threads used to go to page 2 regularly

(if anyone is like "but they're still going to page 2 wtf?" then you haven't yet figured out that you can set posts/page to 50!)

Got two full houses today, one on the Flop and one on the Turn.

lost my entire stack both times

then I bought in for my last 100€ and an hour later left with 560€

Totally not living in a simulation though this is very normal

Your wording is unprecedented, so we can't know if it stacks. "In games using this" should be used to achieve the desired effect, like anordinaryman suggested.

Fair enough, I don't mind the "in games using this" wording

I don't think bottom lines stack (but anyone correct me if I'm wrong). I think the bottom line is just a rule that is added to the game. With goons and Talisman, they say "this" so the rule depends on the card. So if you have two talismans in play, the rule applies to the first copy and the second copy, so it triggers twice. If Talisman said "when you have a talisman in play" instead of "when you have this in play", I don't think it would stack.

Compare Duchess -- "in games using this, when you gain a Duchy, you may gain a Duchess". You don't get 10 Duchesses because the rule exists 10 times.

Ok that makes sense. But now I have a wording complaint -- I get that the text below triggers at the point when you play it, so at the time when you play the first it is in effect and then doesn't stop working if you play a second one. So it does what you intend (except that the effect is throneable). But it's quite confusing because you look at it and think, well if I have two in play the drawing part no longer works.

I think you can achieve the same much more elegantly with a horizontal line and "When you play a Silver while having at least one Hot Springs in play, +1 Card"

Open to feedback.

I think this is just busted -- I don't see why you would ever not decide to build a hot springs/silver engine. Yes it's awkward that you need to alternate them and/or have more hot springs up front, and yes it starts a little slow since the first Silver is just +1 Card, but the upside is so massive. You get to use a card that you buy anyway as your engine piece, can skip other terminal draw entirely, and it becomes stronger than other draw pretty quickly. Not that hard to go hs/hs/silver/hs/silver/silver/silver and net +14 cards and +8$

Today I learned that if German poker organizers say they pay in vouchers, this is often just a legal facade and actually they just pay in cash.

Is this the case 50% of the time or 80% or 95%? Not sure about that yet.

I think it takes a different kind of person to exaggerate results than to fake them, though.
