Dominion League / Season 19 has started! (Rules changes)
« on: January 11, 2017, 05:23:27 am »
Sorry for the delayed post, but here are some updates on what changes with the transition to ShuffleiT for the League. Let's start with an easy one:

Starting player

We are now able to determine the starting player, yay. We don't want to force you to alternate starts, but it's really easy to do. So if one player insists on alternating, please comply with his wish, you can also make him do the clicking if it's too much trouble for you.

If you both don't mind, just do whatever you feel is best.

Spectating

Please turn off the spectator ->player chat.

If you don't want your match to be spectated, that is ok aswell and should be respected.

New cards

Empires and second edition is out, and some of you might have not much experience with them. However, our default ruling continues to be playing with all cards, unless both player agree. (Check your familiar cards tab!)

Unfinished games..

...might be history! if there occurs a game breaking bug that can not be salvaged by undo, proceed as before (see: rules)

Forcing resigns

Unless you have good reason your opponent does not come back within reasonable time, please don't make use of that feature.

now, onto the tough one:

Undo

-If a bug occurs that freezes/breaks the game, grant undo in order to fix it.
-If there is a gameplay bug that would alter your play, grant that aswell
-beyond that, it will be up to you to decide which undos you want to grant and which you don't. However, I would urge you to agree on your policy before the match starts.

We don't want to make a rule for this otherwise before being more experienced on how it influences games. Please use this thread to give feedback throughout this season.

Dominion League / Season 19 Dates & Discussion
« on: November 27, 2016, 06:34:05 pm »
Just keeping you up to date: Since we're transitioning platforms, the new season will begin on Monday the 9th. Hopefully everybody is accomodated with the new client until then.

The signups wont open until we know more about ShuffleIt's subscrption models and everyone knows whether they will subscribe or not. If it actually means that non-subscribers can only play with a limited amount of cards, we need to create new rules for signups. Of course that is only speculation, but if it comes to that, what are your ideas? Require subscription for the regular league + a base division, maybe?

Also, due to unfortunate timings this is the second long break in a row, should we do a little casual tournament inbetween?

2016 DominionStrategy Championships / Grand Final!!!
« on: November 14, 2016, 10:01:05 am »
Mark your calendars and get up early America, our finals will be played this Saturday at 13:00 UTC, which is 4 days and 22 hours away from this post.

This is the seventh week of the tournament, and only two out of the 110 participants made it this far. Who will be able to dethrone our previous Champion MicQ this year? All we know is that it's either Stef or ceviri :) Hopefully we get an exciting final, just like the semifinals were.

Of course there will be some kind of coverage of the match, it'll be announced if more details are known.

Thanks to all the participants in this MF'ing great tournament, see you all next year in another Championship on Shuffle, iT will be great!

2016 DominionStrategy Championships / Interviews
« on: November 11, 2016, 07:25:45 am »
ceviri (tailred) and michaeljb are playing their match tonight at 0.30UTC, which is in about 12 hours from this post. The game will most likely be streamed, it's not quite determined where but it will be posted. For our exciting pre-game coverage, we interviewed our semifinalists, as it is tradition. We thank our participants for their time and great insights.

Interview with ceviri:

How old are you, where are you from, what do you do for a living?
I'm 19, from Singapore. I'll be entering university in a little more than a year, but I have to serve 2 years in the military first.

How did you get introduced to Dominion? What kept you playing Dominion?
My first game was IRL, when my math teacher brought it to a class party in late 2014 or so. As a math geek something about the gameplay really grabbed my interest, and after just 3-4 games I was really hooked. I spent the next few months reading up on it sporadically since I didn't have access to the game, which exposed me to the immense depth of strategy that belied the game, which left me even more desperate to play again. I got together with some of my friends and we played some games with a ghetto self-created set out of slips of paper until we found Goko.

How much do you play Dominion IRL?
Not much any more, with my one friend who plays anywhere near as much as me we usually do it online, although I do own all the sets. Once in a while when we meet up I do bring it out, though. I also do play IRL when introducing newer people to the game, and it almost always gets a really good reception (especially among my fellow math nerds)

Have you played with Empires yet? How do you think it will change the game?
I've played a couple 3-4 player games IRL, and a few on the 2017 beta. It definitely adds a ton more tactical (through things like gathering, split piles) and strategic (landmarks being the obvious thing) decisions, though from what I've noticed from my IRL games, the complexity of some mechanics can be overwhelming for very new players. For experienced players, though, it definitely shakes things up in an exciting way. I had a really fun board involving Tax with drsteelhammer very recently, that sticks in my mind.

How did you find F.DS? What kept you coming back?
For one it's by far the best place for dominion discussion - it was quite apparent that places like reddit and bgg couldn't compete in quality and quantity. I think I found it via one of theory's old articles. I just lurk, posting once in a while to share game reports or join discussions. The discord channel satisfies my idle talk needs.

What was the most memorable Dominion match you’ve ever played?
I usually have a poor memory for stuff like this, so usually I lean towards more recent things. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple, the first game I discovered RC/masq I was pretty proud of myself. There was another game where I went champion/crossroads/harem.. and some other stuff, I know there was buy but no other village or draw, and my opponent decided to go some BM. He got some ridiculously huge lead by the time I kicked off, so the BM was probably something strong, but I came back by the slimmest of margins. Final score was like 52-50, he had 7 provinces with me buying only the last one.

In fact this tournament has been pretty memorable, my first match lasted about 10 hours over two days of games, and each of them were engine boards, including what I think were 2 instances of Pawn/Peasant each? That was pretty epic. I also had a ridiculous game against Robz in the Game Reports section, which included me at one point having 3 possessions and losing 2 to Ambassador.

What are your favorite and least-favorite Dominion cards, and why? What about favourite strategies?
I really like masq, not just for the pin that I mentioned earlier (RIP) but moreso just for the building, trashing, and cycling early. Pretty much anything that accelerates the opener I like, but masq disproportionately so. Like I open masq/masq way more than I should, and I play masq BM way more than I should. Honorable mention to Dungeon, really love the acceleration it gives.

Least favorite, Governor? Not that I think it's monolithic or boring, but rather I'm garbage at playing with it and every time I think I finally got a handle on how to play it I get hit with another loss which makes me think that I'm lost again. I dislike how it makes endgames kinda a crapshoot with how many provinces to leave, especially at the 3-4 mark depending on support of course. Honorable mention: Chapel. Somehow mine always misses the shuffle, and even when it doesn't the game feels so mirrored and even afterwards that it seems very hard to force an asymmetry to generate an advantage.

My favorite strategy would be engines that really let you bear down on your opponent and near-cripple them (which is why I liked the masq pin), but it sucks to be on the receiving end. My favorite is therefore just smashing some super elaborate wonky strategy with a simple easy BM. It gives me some sort of sadistic satisfaction to win that way.

What’s the most important Dominion advice you can give people aspiring to reach the semifinals? What's the most important skill a lot of people are lacking?
Er, I dunno, honestly, I don't really feel that I'm much or even at all better than my opponents so far, and a lot of my advantages had some luck element to them thus far. I guess I can say that it's important to stay positive mentally, to not get tilted by losses, even really silly ones, to avoid small misplays. Small misplays as we all know can have huge huge impacts on games, and its really easy to throw a practically won game by like say not buying messenger first in a 3 pile, so I think staying in the right state of mind is a underrated factor to success.

For an ingame skill, I think being able to judge when BM is good is one. Sometimes I think I err too much towards BM (generally I underestimate single province engines) but especially with fragile or wonky engines, I find myself winning while my opponent tries to do a lot but achieves nothing.

What cards do you think are over- and underappreciated by the community at large and why?
Man I think there's a bit of an underappreciation of Silver now. It's like the popular opinion of Silver oscillates over time and right now we're sort of at the point where it's underappreciated but it's beginning to right itself. At one point I was losing a ton of games due to buying too little silver and crippling my early economy. Not so much at the top level but at my "match appropriate rating" level I see a lot of people subscribing to the blanket 'yellow is purple' attitude without appreciating all the nuance which comes with it and losing out on a lot of speed early. Same logic applies to gold/silver gainers as payloads/accelerants.

For over-appreciated, I dunno, I think fds is kinda pessimistic when it comes to cards. The closest I can think of is Treasure Trove on release, but that quickly got corrected. Maybe shitty trashing (transmute, trade route) on sloggy/bm boards? I regularly see people going for trashing when it's not going to help much, especially in BM when killing an estate puts you in an awkward hole lategame.

If you could make a Dominion card/mechanic that describes you, what would it be?
Wow. Uh, probably something quick, simple and not very creative. +2 cards, trash a card. Sounds great, doesn't it?

How would you describe your tournament run so far?
I definitely never expected to get so far. I don't consider myself anything special, I just sort of... didn't lose? I certainly played quite a bit more careful than regular games and made much fewer mistakes as a result. Definitely quite a few memorable games in the process, though.

Suppose you're reaching the finals. In game 7 you win by spotting that one of the twelve removed cards is the key card. Which one would you want it to be?
Everyone's gonna pick coppersmith for sure, I bet. If bureaucrat had been removed I'd totally pick it. How about, secret chamber for the reaction?

Do you play  games other than Dominion?
My first game that I really spent hours on and read up heavily about was Age of Empires 3, but I dropped it because it was a p2p game and ping from Asia was pretty nasty to play with. I still do follow the scene, though and I think it's an amazing game.
After that, till today, I've been playing League of Legends, been playing since the start of Season 2.
Recently I've gotten very into Eu4*[Europa Universalis] (as people on Discord might have notixed). I'm very keen on the setting and for once it's a sinple player game that I can sink hundreds of hours into. I get pretty bad ladder jitters sometimes and when that happens I don't feel like competing against other people.

For board games, literally none. Not even Monopoly, until very recently.

How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t playing Dominion?
I like doing Olympiad math problems, reading about math, and playing LoL, mostly. Once in a while I'll dabble in some things, like the piano, building robots and stuff, recently even running, but noting much long term.

If you could choose one person on F.DS to be with you on an desert island, who would it be and why?
Woah, I don't think I really know anyone well enough to answer this question meaningfully. Maybe Seprix? He talks a lot, that could be entertaining for a while. Then again, maybe not.

2016 DominionStrategy Championships / Semifinals!

Bracket

We're down to four!

Every one of the semifinalists had to go through a game seven at some point during their tournament run, yet they all made it here through five rounds:

SF1: Stef vs. jsh357

Even though we've seen lots of upsets in the tournament, two top seeds made it into the semifinal in the top half of the bracket. Please keep the rigging jokes surrounding this one to a minimum. Or don't, whatever.

SF2: michaeljb vs. ceviri (tailred)

Our second intercontinental battle probably surprises more people than the first one. Some big names were in their way, so this will  a very interesting match too see who will become our surprise finalist :)

Gl & hf to our participants, and have fun watching for everyone else who didn't quite make it here!

Last week wasn't only brutal for our tournament favourites, it also eliminated a lot of our content creators, namely streamers and youtubers.

This week are eight games, three of the sixteen people have ever streamed before. So as it is now, we only get to see 2-3 of the matches.

So if anybody who likes to cast one of the matches and if any participant is willing to share their screen, you can use this thread to find each other! (or any other medium for that matter)

Best of 16! Here is the full bracket

Another week of crazy upsets has been past. Out of the 16 matches, eight have been won by the lower seed. This includes every semifinalist from last year, including our defending Champion MicQ! Three top 4 seeds got hit so far, and only seven out of the best 16 seeds made it into Round 4. In the meanwhile, five people with a seed that is above 40 made it aswell! So throw out every prediction you made and look forward to see which favourite goes down this week!

This is a Bracket

Hey,

after an exciting round 2 where we lost eleven high seeds and even one of our top 5 seeds, it's time for the next round! Please finish your match until October, 23rd.

Also we got to witness eight tiebreaker games, even more than in the first round. And neither any forfeits nor no-shows, hopefully we can keep that trend going.

Extra congratulations to Lalight, who managed it as seed 61 into the top 32, probably pulling off the biggest upset in the tournament (so far!).

Hey everyone,

week two has started! Congratulations to the winners of round 1; you're almost in the top half now, good job! This also means there are no more byes, everyone in the tournament has to play to advance. Please finish your matches until October, 16th.

Some more or less fun stats from the first round: Of the 44 matches, only 34 were actually played. I hope we get a better quota this round. Also, only three lower seeds (plus one bye) managed to pull an upset, including our married couple who had to play each other in the first round. Also, congratulations to Diggaro who managed to qualify for the second round as the lowest seed, seed 78 to be precise.

Also, we already had six matches that were only decided in the decider game. Quite a few high seeds barely avoided the upsets here, let's see how the next round will go for them.

Dominion League / S17 Champion Match: Sunday October 9th, 19:00 UTC
« on: October 08, 2016, 01:20:43 am »
In the midst of the f.ds Championship, we'll finalize Season 17 of the League with the Championship match this Sunday, 19:00UTC. The reigning Champion, Stef, will be trying to defend the MicQ + Stef tradition of either of them winning every one of the sixteens titles so far. A new challenger has arisen, though. Gamesou will be trying to get his name into the Great Hall of fame. He's only one point behind Stef in the regular season, so we can hope for a close match this time! Having tied Stef in their League match, 3,5 out of 6 games are sufficient to take the title.

So check out the stream over here: https://www.twitch.tv/dominionstreams

The casting line-up will be a surprise!we don't know them, either

Dominion League / Season 18 will start November 7th
« on: September 24, 2016, 10:18:40 am »
Just a quick announcement that the next season will be delayed. It will run from the November 7th until December 11th, then taking a break over the holidays. Also, Season 18 will be the last season on MF. You might say... it's our last dance.

To fill the long break ahead of us, make sure to sign up for the Championship that will take place in the break starting next week.

Please consider these changes when you report back wether you are returning or not.

Cheers!

Dominion League / Season 18 - Signups
« on: September 12, 2016, 06:04:49 pm »
Season 18 will run from the November 7th until December 11th, and you can sign up until Friday, November 4th.
If you want to join or return to division B, please sign up before Sunday 23rd of October.

Staying in the league
Please don't post here, but go to the Results thread and post a message stating you will return for the next season.  If your timezone has changed, let us know.  Otherwise we'll assume it is the same.

Returning to the league
Please post a message here stating your Making Fun username, your timezone, the last season you were in, the division you played and the place you've finished.

New to the league
Welcome to the League! Please post a message with your Making Fun username and timezone. Please make sure to state the exact spelling of your MF name (upper/lower case, special characters, and so on). You will be placed in an appropriate division according to your isotropish rating. If there is a reason to suspect your rating does not represent your skill, feel free to describe it in your signup message.

Please also read the rules to make sure you're comfortable with the format and the time it takes to play a season.

You will also receive a personal message a week before the League starts to confirm your signup. If you do not read the forum regularly enough, you can forward your PM's to your email account so you do not miss it.

When specifying a timezone, please use one of these examples or use the same format and look yours up in the complete list.
