Yep, always the Trash at the top unless someone complains that they can't reach it, then a row of basic VPs and Curses, then a row of basic Treasures, plus Ruins, Potions and/or Spoils as required, then the Kingdom cards in rows by cost. I know it takes up more space, but I can't really imagine putting them all in a compact rectangle.
For my own area, I always have my deck to the right of my play area, and my discard pile to the right of my deck. If I have mats I'll generally put them to the left of my play area.
Oh, and when playing at home I always play at the same end of the table, orientated so the trash pile is furthest from the end.
