Oh crap, I've invited a discussion on edge cases into this thread. What do I do? I really want to spawn another thread to talk about it now....

For me, the play area doesn't matter.  I'm usually playing on a small table where I don't have the luxury of organizing that.  What I am incredibly particular about is the set-up of the kingdom.

Victory on top, money underneath, followed by the kingdom cards.  The kingdom cards must be organized from most expensive to least expensive going from upper left to lower right.  If a bane (or any other action related extra pile) is present, it goes to the far right in between the two rows of kingdom cards.  Treasure related extra piles go in the treasure row.  My friends have learned to just let me do the set up and either get the starting decks prepared or hand me stacks.

Trash goes to the right also?

No worries.  When you pointed out the second P I noticed the second C and it took me a while to realize that it must be Curse.  Every time I'd looked at it earlier I'd just assumed Platinum/Colony :p

I use a Kingdom set up almost just like that -- the only change is I put the trash where you put the Potions. Only if Alchemy cards are in play do Potions come out.

Actually, that would be an interesting metric to review.  theory, can we see stats on who gave us our respect?  If you give most of your respect to one person...

So back on topic... here's how I generally set up IRL

Yep, always the Trash at the top unless someone complains that they can't reach it, then a row of basic VPs and Curses, then a row of basic Treasures, plus Ruins, Potions and/or Spoils as required, then the Kingdom cards in rows by cost. I know it takes up more space, but I can't really imagine putting them all in a compact rectangle.

For my own area, I always have my deck to the right of my play area, and my discard pile to the right of my deck. If I have mats I'll generally put them to the left of my play area.

Oh, and when playing at home I always play at the same end of the table, orientated so the trash pile is furthest from the end.

The trash is usually in the bottom row or below everything (yes, I play on a long table most of the time.) and the kingdom cards are arranged is separate rows for differing costs.  Mats go to the left of players decks, and piles of tokens are arranged in empty spots on the table.  Very flexible setup and probably kind of unorganized.  I actually change the setup a bit when playing on squarish tables.

I'm kind of funny in that I like to wrap my kingdom cards around my base cards. I don't know why. I guess it's a way to not put any one person at a disadvantage when reading cards. One person has to reach to read the 6-cost cards, but the other guy has to reach to read the 2-cost cards. I'm perfectly fine sitting in the most disadvantaged spot where all kingdom cards are farther from me.

So, my layout looks more like this:

As for trash, it's thrown into any corner of the table, as befits a trash pile. It might get organized when relevant kingdom cards are out, such as Forager or Rogue.

Oh yes, and when other cards (bane, Ruins, Spoils, Mercenary, et al.) come into play, I'll tuck them above the treasures. I may actually replace K0 with a stack and shove everything around so the bottom row lines up perfectly with the columns. This is especially true for a bane card, but we have to distinguish it as bane somehow.
