When do you get curses out IRL?

Sure, they're supposed to be out every game, but why go through the trouble of counting them out and getting an extra pile out if they won't be used? Well this is sort of my philosophy. A different discussion promises to devolve into a discussion of edge cases, which I'd rather have here, for when curses might be relevant in strange circumstances. So, here it goes...

Definitely get the curses out:
Witch
Swindler
Torturer
Embargo
Sea Hag
Familiar
Mountebank
Tournament
Young Witch
Jester
Ill-Gotten Gains

Get out the curses for sure, but they probably won't be used:
Ambassador
Fairgrounds
Watchtower (It happened to me one game. I felt like I had a lead and I used my extra buys with WT in hand to run out the curses, which ended up being one empty pile. Of course, I'm probably opening up a Pandora's Box of situations where engines might want a third pile to drain...)

I wouldn't get out the curses here, but maybe there are edge cases?
Masquerade (apart from pins, where running a third pile may be relevant)
Harvest
Menagerie
Tribute
Possession
Vagrant

That last list is probably where the discussion is headed. Maybe you should take this as a challenge to find a case where buying a curse would actually be a good idea. You could come up with a particular edge case, but it might take a little persuading to make me get out the curses IRL.

...let the pedantry commence!

Goons goes into first section, I think.  Maybe second.  With lots of extra buys, the 0 cost cards are good targets for the megaturn.  If you need to drain a pile, Curse is better than Copper.

I always put the Curses out. It takes so little time and I often play more than one game in a row anyway.

Also importantly, them's the rules, yo!

I tend to always get them out; and yeah, technically any engine with lots of spare +Buy might want to run out the curses. (In practice, I've never had that happen in an IRL game.)

I've used +Buys and a pair of talismans to buy out all ten Curses as a third pile for the win.

I always put out Curses. But what's the edge case with Possession? I can't think of a situation where Possession (by itself) increases the odds that Curse will be used.

Added Jester. Don't know how I missed that one.

Possession - "I need to make my deck worse for possessed turns, but I'm not generating $2 for an estate, so I'd prefer curse over copper"

...yeah that's kind of a stretch, but someone was gonna say it if I hadn't...

You're not going to add Goons or BM to the OP? :P

Goons falls under the "massive +Buy engines that just want to run out a pile" category, which would then need to be better defined. Do you think you could quantify it?

Black Market is a card I would never play with IRL (or on iso if I can veto it, it's my number one veto, but this is irrelevant). But its presence alone wouldn't cause curses to be necessary, but rather the card in the black market that requires it.

I think Curses are necessary in any (2p) game in which it's possible to have 10 buys, or even 5. Although, of course, I always have the Curses out.

I get curses out when I realize "Hey! we need curses in this game!"

I just feel like Goons is the most likely case when you'll try to run down Curses for a pile, more than any other engine.

Always. One person usually sets up Treasure, Curse, and Victory card piles and starting hands while another chooses and gets out the kingdom cards.

Multiple Hagglers, in addition to Talisman, can also set up for gaining lots of Curses at once.

If there are cards that give out curses directly, I put them out.  Otherwise, I'll get them out when someone wants to buy one.

That said, I usually play IRL dominion with more than 2 players, which makes piling out on curses much harder.

I just get them out all the time.  After all, you're already getting out at least 16 piles, so what's one more?  You'll spend more time thinking about whether you need it that actually getting it out.

Curses are the easiest pile to run out. Always have them.

In two-player. When I play IRL it's mostly 3P where it's a lot harder and less desirable to run them out.

Always...I say that, but last night I put out ruins instead.  It was a 3p game anyway.

Always.

In my view, it's both simpler AND quicker to simply always set out Curses then it is to look at every kingdom and decide whether it needs Curses or not.

Now that we have councilroom back up (YAY!) I was looking through my achievements and found Purple Pile Driver. It was the watchtower game I was referring to. Here's the link:
