Merchant's cardships (Attack 04, Attack 08, Attack 08, Negotiate) are discarded.

Offensive ships land on Lightning A.

Animal throws a party!  All offensive players draw a card from the Deck.
Mercenary gets paid for his successful alliance, two ships from the warp.

You can't use your power for the rest of the encounter after you've been Zapped.  And for Lightning, the only Zappable part of his power is the token collection.  You can only zap uses of powers.

No, your entire power is shot for the Encounter, although the Cosmic Zap could still be Card Zapped, or Pacifist's power could be Cosmic Zapped if he tries to win with a Negotiate.

No worries there. I figured out that Pacifist didn't have a Negotiate in his hand in the last challenge. We can prevent him from winning the game with good old-fashioned numbers.

He would've held it for this Encounter I'd imagine, since it's his winner if he is successful. He wouldn't want to rely on numbers to win this.

He would've held it for this Encounter I'd imagine, since it's his winner if he is successful. He wouldn't want to rely on numbers to win this.

Obviously that's speculation - you could be right and he might be dry. I just don't know that I would count on it.

I would. If you generate a risk table, then it's likelier that he'll continue the numbers route.

If Pacifist plays a Negotiate and the defender plays a number, then we all lose. Odds of this happening are actually low (especially when you consider that the last encounter suggests that he doesn't have a Negotiate).
If Pacifist plays a number and the defender plays a Negotiate, then we all lose. This is actually likelier than the previous scenario.
And, well, if both play numbers then it depends on what they play, but odds are highly in the defender's favor since everyone would back him.

I just don't see how the last Encounter suggests that he doesn't have a Negotiate. I think it's the opposite actually. He laid out a Kicker and Reinforcements to win - He can't have anything huge back to attempt a second encounter on. And if he were going to choose 1 Encounter to try and win on a Negotiate and 1 to win on a number, it would make sense to win on a number in the first Encounter when you CAN get people to support your attack. In his second Encounter he has to plan on winning himself - so holding an "instant-win" for the second encounter makes MUCH more sense.

I knew he didn't have a Negotiate well before he laid out the Kicker and Reinforcements.

I wish I could send private messages, but I can't.

That's why I backed Lightning. What I was less certain on was the value of the numbers. Unfortunately, knowing that Pacifist doesn't have a Negotiate doesn't matter in light of good old-fashioned butt-kicking.
