I had a thought last night, which almost made me get out of bed and post to tell everyone.
I don't think we're facing a cult. I think we're facing more of a Pied Piper. Well, kinda a mix of both.
Here's how the canonical Piper works:
Each night, the Piper enchants one player. Enchanted players stay enchanted until the Piper dies. Each night (well, at the end of each night), they learn the names of all players who are enchanted at that point. They cannot claim or hint they are enchanted, but otherwise have no negative effects to their role. The Piper wins if all players except himself are enchanted.
Normally, this is a very difficult role to win as, due to the piper needing to get to a situation with just one or two other players not enchanted, at which point either the mafia has a good chance to kill them, or the town has a good chance to lynch them. So I wouldn't be surprised if it were made easier in some way
So there are some obvious differences (people losing roles and wincons notably), but otherwise, I think this would explain what's going on much, much better than a cult. Now, those who have been Ironworks'd who have more information than me can perhaps tell me of some reasons this theory fails, but I suspect we're facing a Piper/pair of Pipers who needs to enchant everyone to win, or at least, a number well above half.
