Weekly Design Contest #202: Extra! Read all about it!

In case you hadn’t heard, there is an upcoming errata to effects that let you take an extra turn.  The main goal is to limit the number of turns a player can take in a row, especially if the kingdom contains multiple ways to take an extra turn.  The wording has also changed.  For example, here is the updated wording for Outpost:

Quote
You only draw 3 cards for your next hand.  Take an extra turn after this one (but not a 3rd turn in a row).

So for this contest, your job is to design something* that lets the player take an Extra turn.  Official cards that meet the criteria for the contest are Outpost, Possession, the Odysseys (Voyage), Fleet, Island Folk, Journey, Mission, and Seize the Day.

Contest Guidelines
  • *Anything goes, including kingdom cards, landscapes, non-Supply cards, and all mechanics up to and including Plunder.
  • Many entries will probably need to include some form of “(but not a 3rd turn in a row),” but note that Fleet and Seize the Day remain unchanged, so once-a-game extra turns are safe.

Judgment Details:
  • The contest will close roughly one week from today.
  • I will judge the entries based on balance, wording, simplicity, creativity, and how fun the entry is to play with, with most emphasis on the extra turn effect.

The wording is unclear. Do you discard down to 1 and draw 3 or up to 3.
Either way, this is just a buffed Outpost.

What happen when I play Golem on a Carnival turn and reveal two Villages? I see three options:
  • You put Village 2 in play, but it has no effect.
  • You discard Village 2, not playing it.
  • Village 2 remains in set-aside land for the rest of the game.
I think 3 is the most literal interpretation, but it's weird. Option 2 seems like what should happen, but there is no instruction that ever tells you to discard. Option 1 would be a compromise that could probably be explained in an FAQ.

The simplest fix is to mirror Warlord's wording: "You can't play cards from your hand that you have copies of in play." That would still let Golems and Heralds play duplicates and avoid weirdness, but still limit playing duplicates normally.

Sidenote, I was going to post this exact card (though I think it can cost $4) but fika beat me to it :)

I'm open to wording suggestions. Do action cards "take" two actions to play? Or do they "cost" two actions?

Then to the cost.  I admit these are hard for my little brain to handle.  With this being non-terminal, does it need to cost 6? I'm trying to compare it to Outpost.  This one basically shuts down all but the very strongest engines, which could be more harsh than Outpost, but on the other hand, this does nothing to harm money decks that only have a couple key actions.

Rainbow Bridge
- Action
+1 Card and +2 Actions.
At the start of Clean-up, if there are at least 6 cards that you have exactly 1 copy of in play (counting this), take an extra turn after this one (but not a 3rd turn in a row).

Notes:
Thoughts on the power level appreciated. It can be activated by Rainbow Bridge + any two other actions + Copper/Silver/Gold.

You might be tempted to get more than one Rainbow Bridge especially if there are no other sources of +Actions, but playing a second one means that Rainbow Bridge no longer counts towards its own condition.

Made this a while ago. About time I brought it out for a WDC.

FAQ: Chameleon can still give you +Coins, but you can't turn +Coins into +Cards. Draw-to-X still works.

So you don't have to make a card that limits the number of turns, right? That is, if I'm reading the rules correctly.

Keep in mind that the errata now limits Voyage to 1 use per normal turn.  I don’t think the change has a lot to do with the power level adjustment, but instead it’s to stop a player from being able to take many, many turns in a row; even turns as limited as Voyage.  Sure there are only 4 Voyages, but things like Kings Court and Royal Carriage exist.

What's the goal?
DXV has gotten sick of being able to take 3+ turns in a row, every single turn, for the whole game. Fleet and Seize the Day are only once a game, which is why they're safe.

So your card should probably include some limitation on the number of turns that can be taken in a row: either “(but not a 3rd turn in a row),” like most of the extra turn cards after the errata; or a once per game effect, like Fleet or Seize the Day.

You’re welcome to make a card without those limits, or possibly with some other limitation, but it’s definitely risky.

gotta keep track of whose turn it will be after all the extra turns finish.
Seems to me like in 3p, this can lead to situations where one player never gets to make another turn and just sits there while the others piggyback off of one another's turns (though granted, you'd have to have a way to make sure you don't trigger your own Survey Station prematurely).

I feel like this card can be improved by making it
"The next time a player gains a Victory card,
take an extra turn after your next cleanup phase, but not two extra turns in a row."

that way you dont get insta extra turns and risk making the game hard to track or annoying and drawn out.

I think you should also make the card trigger off Victory cards costing $4 or more, as it triggering off estates feels a bit weird to me

I disagree. Just because a card (Sleep Walking is the other BM entry) rewards money instead of engine play does not mean that it is bad.

My first idea was to only trash a Gold in play but that is obviously just a less flexible Remodel that is only potentially (it is worse during the opening and middle game) better than Remodel in engines that can net you two Provinces per turn.

My main worry is that this is too bad / lacklustre in normal games and too good / automatic in games with Gold gainers.

For the rest of the game, at the start of your turns, gain a Copper onto your deck.

Crusades stay in play forever, like Champion.

Crusades are an easy way to get an extra turn, though be careful. Get too many and you'll end up flooding your deck with Coppers. I don't know too many decks that can handle three top-decked Coppers.

Maybe you can trash the extra coppers you get each turn. Maybe you even want them in your deck if you're super over-drawing. Or maybe there aren't that many turns left in the game that you don't mind a little Copper flooding.

I've meant for the "cost" of them to be mainly the Copper top-decking, so they are relatively cheap and they aren't terminal. I'd even consider costing them $2. Open to feedback.

How about a one-shot? Enterprise is a Silver that hangs around in your deck until you trash it for an extra-turn. You can get some economy in the opening and then pop it later when the timing is better, or take the extra turn right away. Regardless, you'll have keep getting more if you want the extra turns to keep coming. Unlike Mission and Journey, you can gain Enterprises with Workshops and the like.

Sidenote: props to DXV on the new errata wording, this makes extra turn cards SO much simpler, jeez where has this been all these years.
