Chicago f.ds meetup (July 12&13 - join us!)
« on: May 14, 2014, 09:34:14 am »
+12

Let it be known that there will be a f.ds Meetup in Chicago the weekend of July 12-13.

Saturday: Schuba's Tavern (3159 N Southport Ave), 1PM-6PM
Sunday: Cat & Mouse Game Store (2212 W Armitage Ave), 11AM-5PM

Coming? Tell everyone what you're bringing, or request a game

If you are strongly interested in coming please PM me so I can get an idea of the attendance - your PM is not a commitment, but it really helps me plan for the appropriate size of the events. If you are interested in traveling with another member to Chicago or sharing a hotel room, post here.

If there is anything people would like to discuss about the meetup, talk here! I'll have more details as they are available.

(idea inspired by these threads)

Is there a way to include other f.dsers who can't make it? Maybe by Skype or by posting a video?

One thing to account for is how many sets of Dominion we'd need.  I could bring all sets, though traveling with them is a hassle.  This is assuming it's a date I can get away for!  Hope it is!  I have always wanted to visit Chicago and would love to play some IRL Dominion.

I can certainly bring my video camera (I'll most likely be able to attend), any ideas on what people would want to see? I mean I can just take some candid videos or something but I imagine that won't be the best thing ever.

If I'm able to go, my box can accommodate two games at once with up to three players each -- anyone with the extra base cards from Intrigue (or the base-cards-only set) can allow more games to go on at the same time with only minimal restrictions (two games can't both have Potions, Spoils, Platinum/Colony, or any of the same kingdom cards in them -- I think that's an exhaustive list actually)

The question came up on when we'll pick a date - within the next two weeks is my goal, so those who need to make travel plans well in advance will have time to take the appropriate actions.

I do own all sets + promos in a fancy portable Hobby Lobby case (which is the least helpful since I'll likely be traveling the shortest distance  :P )

I was planning on having my camera with me and thoroughly documenting the event for the viewing pleasure of those who want a report. If people have a video camera/other ideas, please post 'em.

*and if anyone is worried about having their picture on the forum or anything, I know how to use the "blur" tool in GIMP

I might be able to swing this. I'll see if my wife's up for it. If we attend, we'll probably drive, so we should be able to bring all the sets (plus an extra copy of the base cards, plus Enterprise, plus a few other games).

Ooh, trying out Enterprise would be fun.

Further clarification added to the OP: The time of day is TBD based on location, but I am striving for an event starting around noon and running into the early evening (if sufficient interest) which should maximize flexibility for those who may be flying/renting hotels.

So, noon to early evening on Saturday? Or both Saturday and Sunday?

Both, unless there's strong demand for something different. That was my best guess on what would work best for the most people. Would something later in the day on Saturday (generically) work better?

I see no reason not to start at noon. People can just join in when they get there.

I will attempt to get more copies at Game o Rama

Edit: However, it could be worth contacting Jay/someone at RGG and asking for some for the event?  I mean, if this isn't the environment for Dominion promos, what is?

Sweet! I'll bring my copy of Base dominion and Seaside, and could possibly buy another expansion for this, as well. Also, willing to carpool with anyone else coming from Wisconsin.

I meant just so I could have a chance to play with it, if someone manages to get copies for us to buy I will buy everyone drinks.

This brings up a good point: carpooling/rides from airport should probably be organized so nobody gets stranded.  Or are taxis reliable in Chicago?  (I've never been, but would assume they are)

I did not. I'm pretty sure the art wasn't made when I playtested it, since the whole point of me testing it was to get feedback about whether the card was fun enough to make. I am looking forward to seeing the official art!

Man, that would be cool. Unfortunately, "Let's take our infant son and go to Chicago to play Dominion for the weekend" is going to be a tough sell. "Let's pick up a guy neither of us has ever met on the way" is a non-starter. If by some twist of fate I'm going without my family, we should carpool.

Taking the subway from O'Hare is also an option.

Depending on the location, this might also be the preferred option. I'll have a handy guide for this sort of thing when all the details are final.

Announcing the meetup location - Cat & Mouse Game Store! I could not be more excited that they've agreed to host us*. Here's what we get:

  • a game store, with access to all their demo copies of Dominion & the expansions in addition to whatever we bring
  • a location right off the Blue Line, which means anyone flying in from O'Hare simply gets on the train at the airport, rides a few stops, and walks 0.3 miles to the meetup
  • pretty much the only place in Chicago with plentiful free on-street parking
  • plenty of nearby bars to adjourn to after the store closes, to game or socialize, depending on our mood and if people want to stick around

Also, the date will be a Sunday, exact date still TBD. This was clearly best based on everyone's availability.

*Cat & Mouse is my employer. Seemed an obvious fit, really!

I've updated the opening post with the current information.

Looks like the store is open from 11 AM to 5 PM on Sundays. Does this mean that we'll have to leave by 5:00, or do we have special dispensation for the event?

Same here.  Will still try to go, though.  Maybe sightsee a bit on Saturday.

Yeah, same here. If nothing else, we could try to meet up somewhere else on Saturday. Somebody's hotel or something.

People want more than a one-day meetup? I mean, there's a Saturday board game group on the Northside we could also go to. Or whatever else people want to do, I'm just trying to organize what is the most popular - do people want a two-day event?

If it's a two day event, I'll show for both, let's put it that way.  If not, I'm sure I can find something to do.

I think it will make people much more likely to travel. Traveling 6+ hours for a 6 hour event doesn't make any sense, traveling for a weekend would.

Alright. Do people want more gaming or more Chicago for Saturday? Anything specific? We can groupthink this.

I'd vote more gaming -- I am close enough to Chicago that I will definitely be there often enough for touristy stuff and I will explore the city. If other people want to do touristy stuff, I'd be willing to do that as well, though. If there's enough interest I'd be happy to do two days of (mostly) boardgaming.

The way your initial post was phrased, I (and apparently some others) read it as a two-day event. As Twistedarcher said, it makes more sense to travel further for a longer event. Coming from Minnesota, I would definitely prefer a two-day event.

Another advantage of two days is that people can still participate even if they can only make one of the two days. It's not a super-formal event. Also, the rest of my family probably won't want to hang out gaming for 6 hours straight on either day, so for me two days means I can get more gaming in without a marathon session.

By the way, does Cat & Mouse have a diaper-change station?

Any chance of a finalized date soon? My mother-in-law is coming to visit sometime during this span, and I'd like to know which weekend she shouldn't come.

Will try to nail this down tomorrow at work. It gets trickier to pair a Saturday and Sunday together, but we can do it (for most weekends one of the days is wrecked and the other golden, or both are pretty terrible, trying to suss out a happy medium).

Cat & Mouse does not have a diaper-changing station, though we do have a public bathroom.

Saturday is definitely on then, we'll "crash" a local Euro-gaming meetup that also runs 11-5 on Saturdays. I've reached out to them to let them know we're coming (sometime).

The meetup will be July 12-13. This works for literally everyone who sent in availability except for one and is even the "ideal" time for a few people. The twist is I may have to work on Saturday, in which case I'd need a volunteer to help out that day.

On Saturday, we will be joining the Chicago Euro Boardgamers (also from 11-5) at the Mystic Celt restaurant and bar, steps from the Southport Brown Line. Full directions will follow later. After that, we've got options. We can adjourn to Guthrie's, a board-game focused bar within walking distance (too small to fit us + patrons, hence it wasn't an option for the original location but should work if some people go home/back to hotels or such), or even to my apartment (if people aren't creeped out by the concept and we'd fit; I've got a fenced-in backyard and pro-gaming roommates), or people can just head home, or whatever.

Sunday will be at Cat & Mouse as previously announced.

I'm going to see if I can work out some cool stuff with C&M for Sunday.

Always taking suggestions on what people want for this meetup!

NOOOOOOO!!!! The guy who was most enthused about playtesting!

Well, should still be fun. Thanks again, Voltaire, for setting this up. In addition to Dominion, I will try to bring

Gauntlet of Fools
Infiltration
The Dwarf King
Ghooost!
Piña Pirata
Kingdom Builder (a bit bulkier, but I might be able to squeeze it in
Greed (if it has arrived by then)

What kind of help are you looking for regarding Saturday?

Basically someone who can guarantee they can be there from 11-5, who can contact the regular hosts the day-of* (since we may be bringing ~12 people to a pre-existing ~30-person event), be the point-of-contact for anyone lost/needing directions, that sort of thing if I end up working Saturday.

I'll get a Google Doc going soon of what people are bringing/what demos C&M has we can play.

*I'm in touch with them now, I just mean at the start of the actual meetup

Assuming I am still going, I will definitely bring Dominion, can also bring: Innovation (pre-Cities expansions), Saboteur/2, uh, that's about all I have that's interesting I guess.

The date does not rule out going entirely for me, I just need to make sure of some things.

At the moment, I'd guess we'll have about 10 people. (We have 13 RSVP'd, but the odds say some of them will have other things come up)

Saturday will have plenty of games already there, and Sunday will too. Plus, I can bring my own games - biking them a few blocks is easier than others loading them into cars or flying with them. I'll get that doc up soon, so nobody has to lug stuff we already have.

Cool, I should be there barring a last minute work trip coming up.

My collection (I can bring all of them -- Adam we have a decent amount of overlap, so we can maybe coordinate who brings what so we have less games)

Hanabi
Agricola
Through the Ages
7 Wonders
Netrunner (only the basic decks)
Memoir 44
Dominion
Seaside
Suburbia
Zen Garden
Love Letter
Paperback

LastFootnote, I am really looking forward to playing the Dwarf King.

Any recommendations on hotels good for the locations?  Special rates?

Hotels in Chicago are crazy $$$. Will you be driving or flying?  Depending on the amount of time you're willing to spend getting into the city (and your comfort learning a foreign transit system), you could get a better deal saying in a suburb and taking a METRA downtown. Both locations are extremely easy to get to from downtown (the Loop).

Sunday is incredibly easy to get to from O'Hare on public transit. Saturday is trickier and will require a transfer no matter what, but isn't crazy.

Other Chicagoans chime in if you have thoughts. I am biased as a non-car owner/biker.

I would be flying in, probably leaving Charlotte and arriving at O'Hare around 9 am there Saturday.  I unfortunately do not have the freedom to come for three days.  Note: have not yet committed to anything, so if it's looking impossible I can back out fine.

Well, it'd take about an hour to use public transit to get from O'Hare to the Saturday meetup (get on the train in O'Hare, transfer to a bus) and cost ~$6. The good news is leaving Sunday would be a piece of cake (get on the train blocks from the store, get off the train literally in O'Hare), taking about 30 minutes and cost $~2.

Of course taxis cost way more, but are also readily available.

The trick would be where you spend Saturday night. There are definitely hotels in the area, I just don't know your price range.

I found a hotel that's sort of central to the two stores, should work.  I think that the worst thing that could happen, looking at the schedule here, is that I'm late on Saturday, which is not a big deal really.  As long as I leave early enough on Sunday to make the flight things should go all right.  How backed up does security get at O'Hare (if you know)?

I found a hotel that's sort of central to the two stores, should work.  I think that the worst thing that could happen, looking at the schedule here, is that I'm late on Saturday, which is not a big deal really.  As long as I leave early enough on Sunday to make the flight things should go all right.  How backed up does security get at O'Hare (if you know)?

It's actually not terrible. My girlfriend used to work a job that had her flying almost every week, and O'Hare security never seemed to take more than 30-45 minutes.

Of course if I promise you that it will take 2 hours for your flight.  :-X

Seems like enough people are bringing Dominion that maybe I don't have to bring all my sets. For those who are bringing their sets, what kind of sleeves do you all use, if any?

LastFootnote, I am really looking forward to playing the Dwarf King.

I think you'll like it. Hopefully we can get a few others to play. It's good at 3 players, but a bit better at 4. I also wouldn't mind trying 5 players (which is the maximum).

My collection (I can bring all of them -- Adam we have a decent amount of overlap, so we can maybe coordinate who brings what so we have less games)

AdamH, are you really planning on bringing all of that?  :o

I have a bag I carry with me to all board gaming events with that stuff in it. It fits because in one box there are likely to be three games or so. The bag is very heavy but it's on wheels, plus I'm driving there so it's not really inconvenient. It would actually be less convenient for me to take games out since I don't want to rearrange boxes, so yeah I'm bringing all that stuff.

In addition to playing board games, I have a passion for putting board games away :P

EDIT:

Seems like enough people are bringing Dominion that maybe I don't have to bring all my sets. For those who are bringing their sets, what kind of sleeves do you all use, if any?

I use the Fantasy Flight sleeves - purple label. All of my cards are sleeved.

I can't tell, the package has a teal label on it.  I have two or three hundred Extras.

Everything booked now.  Psyching myself up to wake up at 4 am on July 12th!

If each package contains 100 sleeves, they're standard. If each package contains 50 and says "125% thicker", then they're premium. I use standard Mayday sleeves, myself.

Anyhow, it sounds like there are enough different sleeving methods that I should bring all my sets, since I won't usually be able to combine them with others'.

Not as much. I just remembered this thread I started for my Agricola storage solution -- it's more typical of what I use, though it's weird that Agricola actually takes up the whole box.

BTW, are you coming, EFHW?

Would it be OK with people if I organized the GoogleDoc spreadsheet differently? I was thinking something like:

Game     Attendee1     Attendee2     Attendee3
Game1XX
Game2AllExpansion1
Game3X

That way we can alphabetize the games and quickly see for any game who (if anybody) is bringing it.

EDIT: I just created a second sheet and am filling it out now. I won't touch the first sheet unless Voltaire and the rest of you are OK with it.

Fine by me.

Also, I have way, way more games than I currently have listed. My thinking was, if there were any requests and/or people who didn't want to lug games around and I had access to them, I'd bring them once we saw what we had.

OK, done. I have hidden (but not deleted) the old sheet.

I'm adding a green background to the games I intend to bring. I can bring the other games I own too but by request as I'm not sure what people want/we need.

Perhaps it would be best to color the games you do NOT intend to bring unless they are requested?

Personally, I only intended to play Dominon myself.  However, I understand some peoples' need for variety.

I plan to mostly play Dominion. I want to get in at least one game of The Dwarf King with Twistedarcher. The Dwarf King, Ghooost!, and Piña Pirata are all incredibly portable and require almost no setup, so they should be nice for playing in a bar/restaurant, which Dominion really isn't.

I'd be happy playing Dominion the whole time, but there's probably a place for games like Resistance, Wits and Wagers, Say Anything -- games that accommodate a large number of people, are fairly light and short, and have a big social component. It may be better than just doing a bunch of 2P Dominion games the entire time, you know?

I should elaborate. If somebody is looking to see who is bringing Settlers of Catan, they are going to look for that game and then scan sideways. They will see an X under your name. They are not going to check to see if there are any other games that you have highlighted in green, which means that you're not actually bringing Settlers unless requested. Hence, highlighting the games you actually ARE going to bring makes zero sense, because the rest of us aren't going to highlight every single game on our lists. This is why I suggest highlighting games that you own but DON'T plan to bring.

I was assuming that other people would follow suit and that people would bring a lot fewer games than they have in their collection.

I think pretty much everyone intends to bring the games they listed. I, for instance, have some other games that I didn't list because I don't intend to bring them (Settlers, Pandemic, etc.).

I do think it's a good idea to have a color for "games I could bring if requested".

*Cat & Mouse is my employer. Seemed an obvious fit, really!

I ducked in there last Christmas break to do some last minute shopping. It was about two days before Christmas. I had a big blue Samsonite suitcase and the woman working there let me stash it behind the counter while I shopped. I bought a copy of ticket to ride, probably some magic cards and some toy knights for my mother, who is a play therapist. There was a gentleman there too IIRC. Did I meet you!?

Also, this sounds fun and I really wish I could go, but my travel budget for the summer is all tapped out.

No, but I know everyone you did meet! If you've seen references on this board to me starting a new job, this is it - it's only been about three weeks. If the gentleman there was mid-20s, black hair, asian, he's a close friend of mine. If not, I still know who it was!

I'm going to try to make it as well. A buddy of mine is from Chicago so I may have a travel partner/place to crash for the weekend.

I'll have to check out the spreadsheet, but I also have quite a few games I could bring, and the friend I mentioned has a game called Euphoria which is pretty excellent (and some others if I can convince him to go).

Before checking the spreadsheet, here's what I have:
  • 7 Wonders
  • Apples to Apples
  • Arkham Horror
  • Balderdash
  • Cards Against Humanity
  • Citadels
  • Dominion -- all sets and promos
  • Monopoly Deal
  • Monty Python Fluxx
  • Munchkin (and 4 expansions)
  • Power Grid
  • The Resistance

Either I'm missing or something, or no one has mentioned playing Mafia yet, which I find strange.

Heh, I haven't played that in years. The Resistance is basically a formalized version of it.

I hope to be able to bring Two Rooms and a Boom if it's delivered by that weekend (seems like an interesting group game, check out the Kickstarter for it). I will also have Greed to bring if it's delivered by then.

I was just told that the Meetup group on Saturday, July 12 has been booted for a paid event. We can no longer meet there. Rest assured that I will find us another place to meet and it will be awesome. I will try for something in the same neighborhood due to those who have already booked transportation/hotels. I just wanted to keep everyone up-to-date that our plans are going to (slightly) change.

I can't speak for everyone, but I am willing to kick in $20 or so if we need to rent a space for Saturday.

There might be hotels that have large meeting rooms that we could use on Saturday. I'll take a look.

Found a site that does meeting rooms, it's about 200 for an 8-5 day that includes breakfast, lunch, water service for 10 people. Not sure that's our best option though.

If it includes breakfast and lunch, I think my wife and I can kick in $80 or so. $100 if necessary.

EDIT: In fact, that seems like an incredible deal. Food for two meals for 10 people AND the use of a meeting room for 9 hours? Sounds like a steal for $200.

I'm putting it in my phone but I can't give you more than a maybe because I have goofy work schedules.  I'll probably drive in for Sunday or something at least.

Uh, I don't have a physical copy of Dominion, but I've got....Marvel Legendary, Tanto Cuore, Catan with a few expansions, Killer Bunnies with all of them as far as I know...and some other random stuff I guess.  Can't carry all that but I can grab some.

FYI: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/teens-death-exposes-entrenched-chicago-violence-24020917

*sigh*

Chicago is a big city. This meet-up will occur entirely in the safest neighborhoods, whose crime stats are comparable to any other major American city (ie completely safe, under any non-paranoid person's definition). The actually dangerous* parts of the city are miles away to the west and south.

There is no better way to irk a Chicagoan than for someone to bring up the city's violence (which is a real, horrible problem) without any attempt to set it in context.

What point were you trying to make, ash?

*even then, I highly doubt any f.ds meetup attendee would be in danger, even if we held this meetup in those areas

Just don't go knocking on gangs' hideout doors and ask them to fill out a survey for your research. About minute 5:00 is where the fun story starts.

As someone with a rural background who is friends with folks who share said rural backgrounds, I have a rather thin skin about the "dangerous city" misunderstanding due to constant admonitions from parents and other family who know nothing about cities telling me how I'm going to die.

One of my friends was admonished by his aunt for living in Chicago after one of the particularly nasty drive-by shootings at a public park last summer. He told her he'd be sure to no longer visit small city parks that require two train rides, a bus, and 90 minutes to reach from his house.  :P

Plus, I'm a railfan - I literally go to the wrong side of the tracks for fun. Most of the South Side is fine as long as you exercise a little common sense.

So I was doing some handy-work around the house and found some of the extra sheets of transfer paper I used to make my Dominion box -- I used this to transfer the design my g/f made on regular paper onto the front of the box so I could use the wood-burning tool to make it look all awesome and stuff.

I have no use for the extra sheets, but if someone else is thinking about doing something similar to their storage solution and might get some use for it, I'd be happy to bring it. Let me know if you're interested.

Looks like my itinerary got screwed up somehow, and I just noticed it when my Dad asked if he could come along.  I won't be arriving until late Saturday Night, so I'll just be there for Sunday's event.  It's probably just as well since that's the main one everyone is coming to.

Update: still no location for Saturday. I have contacted every game-related store on the north side of Chicago, as well as several bars, and they're all either busy or not interested. I'm committed to this meetup being a full weekend, and have an emergency backup plan in place should no alternative be found.

The good news is that I don't have to work Saturday or Sunday, which makes everything oh so much easier on my end.

Just wanted to give you all an update since I know it's been awhile since the last one.

It looks like Midway is closer than O'Hare?

You'd be taking a train from either, so the difference is negligible. You'll have to transfer either from train to train or train to bus either way. Just go with whichever airport has the better flight/time/price/airline.

I only fly United.  Decided to keep my post up so people realize there's two airports in Chicago in close proximity so they have choices.

Bump! Start getting excited - this is less than two weeks away!

Here's Cat & Mouse's Facebook event for the Sunday portion of the meetup, for those who do that sort of thing.

I have one more location to re-check for Saturday but realistically (so close to the date) Saturday is going to need to be at my apartment (that was the emergency backup location). I am rather sad to have found that all other locations (particularly gaming-oriented ones) were either booked, not interested, or worse, ignored my inquiries.

I'll have final details very soon!  ;D

/insert Prof. Farnsworth image

Good news everyone!

My re-check turned up a bar that will rent us a private room (with bar) for a very reasonable rate from 1-6 PM on Saturday. We could then adjourn to my apartment (1.3 miles away, so either a nice walk or take the train two stops), if there is sufficient demand to continue gaming/socializing. Is this something we'd want to do? The alternative would be to spend the entire day at my apartment. I leave the choice to you all.

Either way, Saturday will be in the Lakeview neighborhood and the Cubs will be at home that day, so parking will be extremely difficult. I'll provide more info when plans are final, but the short version right now is parking on Saturday =  :( and parking on Sunday =  :)

FYI

Also! No matter what, nobody has to pay anything for Saturday if you don't want to! If we go with the bar, the reservation fee is quite modest and then they have a (cheap) collective minimum tab we'd need to run up. I can't possibly imagine we wouldn't reach it, and I'm fine covering the difference (if there even is one). They also serve food, and it's actually very good food.

I am happy to help pay for the reservation fee Saturday, from the couple people that said they would be willing to spend a bit seems like we could make Saturday work, I agree though that absolutely no one should feel the need to pay anything and would only want to make sure no one felt uncomfortable.

So... the airline has messed up our flights AGAIN and they refuse to change my flight to a reasonable time.  I am not sure if I'm still going at this point.

The lesson here is to never go with US Airways.  I used them years ago and had no problems, but apparently they have gone down the tubes since then.

I'll probably be in, if I can find someone to drive with from Denver (possibly have an IRL friend that could be interested).

edit: added games I could bring to the spreadsheet

Looks like I won't be able to make it to this one after all, unfortunately.

What's the best option for getting to the meetup on Saturday for those driving? Park elsewhere and metro in?

Almost certainly. The ink should be dry on the reservation tomorrow (I assume 4th of July holidays slowed things down on their end) - holding off on that to give final directions.

ANNOUNCING FINAL DETAILS FOR THE MEETUP THIS WEEKEND!

Saturday, July 12 @ Schuba's Tavern (Upstairs Lounge), 1-6 PM

3159 N Southport Ave, Chicago IL
Closest L stop: Belmont (Red and Brown lines)
Closest bus line: Belmont
Parking: pay parking available on Belmont, Southport, & Lincoln ($2/hour, 3 hour limit) - there is a Cubs game on the same day, so parking will be strictly enforced and likely busy. Expect hunting for a spot to take awhile.

We'll have the entire upstairs lounge at Schuba's as our private meetup space! It's full of tables, chairs, and a private bar (they serve great food, too). This is the day where we'll have the most space - if you want to play anything big, try to aim for Saturday.

Saturday, July 12 after Schuba's @ Voltaire's apartment, 6 PM - whenever
PM for address
Closest L stop: Sheridan (Red line)
Closest bus line: Irving Park
Parking: permit parking in Cubs territory. Impossible.

If there's sufficient interest, I'll happily host the gathering at my place after we leave Schuba's. It's about 1.3 miles away. I have a reasonably well-stocked game library and enough space for 2-3 games to be going at once.

Sunday, July 13 @ Cat & Mouse Game Store, 11-5 PM
2212 W Armitage Ave, Chicago IL
Closest L stop: Western (Blue line)
Closest bus line: Armitage
Parking: free parking on Armitage. Should be plenty available.
click here for the Facebook event

At Cat & Mouse we'll have the entire play space at the store for the entire day, as well as access to all the store's demo games (the copies we use at game nights and in the store to show off games to customers). Like most game stores it'll be a bit crowded, so we'll probably need to play 4-player Dominion (and hey, this is a social event anyway ;)). Try to aim for smaller games on Sunday.

I HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF GUEST PERMIT-PARKING STICKERS. If you are driving in to Chicago and are unable to take public transit from your hotel, or otherwise need to drive to either of Saturday's locations, PM me and I will reserve a guest permit sticker for you. These will allow you to park on any street, but know that due to the Cubs game these streets will also be very, very crowded.

If you have any questions or need any further information, please ask!

AIRPORT DIRECTIONS

Saturday, July 12
from O'Hare to Schuba's (about an hour)
1. take the Blue line (all trains will be travelling in the correct direction) from O'Hare to Belmont
2. transfer to the Belmont (number 77) bus eastbound. Get off at Southport. You will literally get off the bus outside of Schuba's.
cost: $5.25

from Midway to Schuba's (about an hour)
1. take the Orange line (all trains will be travelling in the correct direction) from Midway to Clark & Lake
2. transfer to the Brown Line northbound (train will say "Kimball") and get off at Southport
3. walk south on Southport to Belmont. Schuba's is on the southeast corner.
cost: $2.25

Sunday, July 13
from O'Hare to Cat & Mouse (about 45 minutes)
1. take the Blue line (all trains will be travelling in the correct direction) from O'Hare to Western
2. walk east on Armitage to Cat & Mouse. It will be on the north side of the street.
cost: $5.00

from Midway to Cat & Mouse (about an hour)
1. take the Orange line (all trains will be travelling in the correct direction) from Midway to Clark & Lake
2. transfer to the Blue Line (train will say "O'Hare") and get off at Western
3. walk east on Armitage to Cat & Mouse. It will be on the north side of the street.
cost: $2.50

In Chicago, train (L) trips cost $2.25 and bus trips cost $2. Transfers within two hours of your first trip are 25 cents. There is a "soak the tourists" fee in place at O'Hare that makes trips on the Blue Line that start there $5 instead of $2.25. You can avoid this extra fee if you're using a pass. The pass you might want to consider is a 24-hour pass (called a "1 Day Pass") for $10, depending on how much extra travelling you may be doing. There's also a 3-day pass - I forget how much they cost. The 1-Day pass won't save you any money if you're only using transit to go to and from the meetup.

Thanks again to Voltaire for putting this together!

I think I'm still going to make it there. Realistically, I don't know how long I'll actually be able to stay. I'm coming with my wife and baby, and neither a bar nor a game store is going to have space for said baby to crawl around. So my wife and I will alternate holding him and playing games and/or we will play as a team. But I'm not sure how long we can keep that up. I'm guessing we'll be there for part of Saturday and none of Sunday, but hopefully I'm wrong and we'll be able to stay longer.

It seemed like a good idea at the time!

It also might be worth noting that Taste of Chicago is this week, which could complicate travel.

Since Taste is downtown and this isn't, if anything it should make travel easier as the CTA will be running extra trains for Taste...and least, that's been my experience the past few years.

Oh, last call for me to bring games. I am planning on bringing:

Dominion (all)
Greed
The Dwarf King
Piña Pirata

If anybody wants me to bring anything else (Gauntlet of Fools, Kingdom Builder, SmallWorld, Infiltration, etc.), speak now or forever hold your peace.

Cat & Mouse has demo copies of Kingdom Builder, Small World, and Infiltration, and I own Gauntlet, so don't worry about bringing those - I can bring them on Saturday if needed.

How many people are attending this event?

I have 10-14 RSVPs for the various days, with some of those people probably unlikely to show up due to the way all human events work. And hopefully some people will show up unexpectedly.  :)

Feel free to post in the thread that you're coming if you'd like, btw! The initial PM thing was simply designed to make sure people were serious for my planning - I figured if people didn't take the extra step of sending a PM, they wouldn't take the extra step of actually coming to Chicago.  ;)

I'll be there from 11 to around 2 on Sunday.  Because my wife and I ended up in two separate planes and they can't fix it, we have to go to the airport early. It's too bad but at least it's something.

Will there be a way to watch the World Cup on Sunday? I may bring my laptop for that purpose if not.

One last announcement from me - work did end up scheduling me for Saturday until 1 PM, so TwistedArcher has graciously agreed to arrive early to check us in and getting the gaming started.  :) I'll see everyone by 1:15 if all goes well.

Are there any good restaurants for brunch near  cat and mouse?  Preferably with vegetarian options?

I'd recommend the Red June Cafe. Right around the corner. A couple spots north on Damen (though I haven't been to any of them), too, if you want more options.

The weather may be helping us out - it's going to rain all day, and I bet the Cubs are going to be rained out. A little less stress on the parking!

I wish it would rain all day here in Portland, like it usually does.  It's been really sunny recently.

Hey everyone! Just a quick post here because we're in the middle of a 7-person game of Cosmic Encounter! The meetup has gone better than I possibly could have imagined. I'll have more photos from today up later (probably Monday or later), but for now, here's a picture of what's going on right now:

clockwise starting with green shirt: liopoil, a non-f.ds member, Axxle, TA, and EFHW. Not pictured: mcmc (getting a refill) and Voltaire (taking this picture)

Fun facts from this game: Axxle is a parasite, and TA and I agreed to Negotiate instead of him getting me that beer from the blitz game.

Leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again, but it was fun!

Dominion, Cosmic, Avalon, Hanabi, Room 55, and a whole bunch of other games were played. Great fun with great people.

The venues that Voltaire got were great, and it looked like everyone had an incredible time. It was cool putting a face and body to a bunch of you.  It seems like meet was a great first success.

If anyone finds themselves in San Diego, look me up!

Are you referring to each other by your real names or usernames?

I CAN'T TELL!!! :'(

On the serious side, the fiancé and I have decided to crash at her place at purdue rather than try to drive all the way home tonight, so you'll have to wait until tomorrow until you can see the video.

On the train going back to Michigan - I have to echo what the others have already said, this was a really fun weekend.  It would have been great if the Europeans, Australians and everyone could have been with us!  Many thanks to Voltaire, who picked great venues and made this happen.  It will be interesting to see if having met irl affects how those of us who play mafia read each other.  We also recruited a new player who plans to join f.ds.  Adam and Last Footnote and Voltaire all brought awesome Dominion sets and I got to lose lots of games!  So where to next year?

What's better than moving pictures? Still images and text!  :D  This is a vague overview of how the meetup went, as best I can remember. I was having too much fun!

Saturday

Since I had to work and arrived late to the meetup, TA and mcmc grabbed the space for us. By the time I arrived I found Dominion well underway. Huzzah! We played some three-player games - EFHW and I lost one to mcmc's Big Money, I remember that one. I didn't get a single picture of us playing Dominion all weekend as I was in those games myself! A dilemma I solved later in the day...

Sushi Go! If you're not familiar, it's "pure" card drafting, with adorable pictures. Super-fast to play and great fun. That's my hand (and cards), Axxle's torso, and TA's hand. Now you know!

We had some food, had some drinks, and broke out some non-Dominion games. There was Pina Pirata, Agricola, Sushi Go, and maybe Dwarf King? Yes, I think TA and someone played Dwarf King.

These find gentlemen you know better as mcmc (hatless) and AdamH (behatted). They swore they could play Agricola in one hour. I didn't time them.

Pina Pirata in action! Starting in the lower-right and going clockwise, your players are liopoil, EFHW, Axxle, TA, and mcmc.

And now, the image you've all been waiting for!

The Saturday edition of the 2014 f.ds Chicago Meetup! L to R (standing), liopoil, Axxle, AdamH, mcmc, TA, EFHW, Voltaire. L to R (seated), LastFootnote and family, AdamH's gorgeous custom Dominion box

After we left Schuba's, many of us came back to my place for a four-hour game of Cosmic Encounter. You've seen that already - check earlier in the thread. The result was Axxle and a non-f.ds member (thanks to Avalon on Sunday, perhaps a future f.ds member?) rejoicing in their shared victory.

Sunday

I didn't get any pictures Sunday, but you've all already seen AdamH's video. The day was filled with (more) Dominion, something like 7 games of Avalon, Room 55, Gauntlet of Fools, Hanabi, and maybe that was it? No, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. We opened and closed the store, and met many more f.ds members.
_______________

I want to extend a huge thank-you to everyone I met this weekend. You all made this a wonderful event, and I'm excited to learn where I'm going to be traveling for the next one.  :)

It's really surreal to see a video of the place and people I just saw that are now halfway across the country again.  Sorry I didn't end up in any photo opps; I wasn't being sneaky, that's just how things went!

I played several games of Dominion against dondon151, ADrownedKernel, AdamH, my wife, a woman I forget the screen name of (sorry), and a guy who had walked in to the store and had no idea what he was getting in to.  It was great playing some high skill opponents in person!  Feels so much different than playing with 'normal' friends, but very satisfying.

Now I need to continue resting my feet.  Chicago was murder on those, but well worth the visit.  Right up there with NYC and London for me.

To most Europeans, "reasonably close" describes a lot smaller distance than to Americans I believe.

Interested, yes. Available to travel much, not so sure. Depending on the timing, I could do a weekend either in Canberra or probably Sydney, but Melbourne would be a bit of a stretch unless I could get cheap flights.

I am so sad I couldn't make it. I live in Chicago, but was busy.   :(

Sadly, I am not getting less busy, so my Dominion days may be getting fewer and farther between.

But, I am so glad you enjoyed yourselves in the Windy City! And that only your feet were murdered, and not.... you.

Hey finally checking back here. All I can say is the photos and video are amazing and still don't do the event justice. This was one of the most fun weekends I have had in forever. It was amazing to meet you all in person and to get to learn so many new games. It really wasn't even like we were all meeting for the first time, much more like old friends reuniting and reminiscing, telling old stories and making new ones. I can not wait for the next one and will absolutely be there! Till next time :)

Sweden is warm enough in the summer. I would maybe be interested in traveling to another country for a weeked of Dominion (and possibly other games).

The weather map lies! I'm in Stockholm right now, and we have like 23 degrees.

I'd love for that weather. It's like 28 and humid in Toronto/Montreal.

I think people forget how much warmer Europe is, by latitude, than the US and Canada (excepting the west coast).  Stockholm (59° N) has about the same climate as Winnipeg, MB (49° N).  Paris (48° N) has about the same climate as New York City (40° N).  Madrid (40° N) has about the same climate as Atlanta, GA (33° N).

From a climate point of view, most of non-mountain Western Europe looks like the thin slice of the US/CA west coast... thank the Gulf Stream for that.

I don't envy that. We've had it like that for a couple of days now. It's finally settling down.

42º and counting in Madrid!  :D
Luckily, it's not as brutal in our Eastern coast. More like in the early 30s. That's considered good temperature, BTW.

Also, people that complain about humid heat have never encountered truly dry heat.

Yes. yes they have. 37.7 degrees here in Utah. Dry heat is much much better than humid heat.

Humid heat is more annoying than dry heat, I'll give you that.
Crank the temperature all the way to the mid-forties however (I think that's 115ºF?), and you'll be begging for some humidity. You'll be gasping for air but your throat is shutting down. You will try to sweat, but there will be none left in your body. Sunstroke will hit before you realize it. Try putting your head in an oven (please don't), that's exactly how it feels like.
I'll take sweaty and thick over murderous any time of the day and twice on Sunday.

There's a reason life develops in tropical areas but not in the Sahara, if you ask me.

Or And you could have to hydrate yourself or face the very real possibility of dying...

FTFY.

I've experienced 35º+ with 100% humidity (July in Eastern Asia), and 40º+ with 90% (common in southern Spain). I would be hard pressed to say it was comfortable. Still, IMO, it doesn't compare to the hell of true dry heat (can find it in small riverless towns further inside Spain). I'm talking birds dropping unconscious from the trees and cooking on the floor, here.

I've been ridiculously busy, so I am just catching up on stuff I missed now... Including, unfortunately, this awesome get together, which looks like it was awesomely awesome! I'm expecting a full report from my brother at some point, but I just wanted to say how great it was you all could meet up, and I hope to be involved next time it happens! This is reason 888 why F.ds is the greatest worldwide gaming community on the internet.

Man. I had four strips of bacon yesterday. Was one automatically undercooked, one automatically overcooked? No, let's put a stop to that right here, all four strips were excellent.

This sounded great! AndrewisFTTW, markusim and I might have a mini Montreal meetup next week. I'm interested in seeing pictures of people losing games!

Maybe we'll have photos? Then maybe you'll all stop making fun of me about my muppets career.

Montreal meetup today. Every time KingZog loses a game Markusin and I have agreed to buy a round for everyone in the pub except KingZog. This is immediately followed by five minutes of photos of KingZog's increasingly frustrated face. Should be fun!
