It was talked about in my stream tonight, so I'm making a thread.

So why don't we ever have meetups to play Dominion IRL? All of the IRL tournaments are base-only or don't focus on 2P Dominion, and meeting IRL people is fun.

Who wants to do this? Where are they located? Is it possible to have a decently-sized meetup of F.DS people? I live in Cincinnati.

Southeast here.  Could swing for other parts of the East coast, but only if there's guaranteed to be a decent meetup!

The problem is, everybody is too far away.  If you want to pay for plane tickets, hotels, food, etc. then maybe people would come.

5 hour drive isn't terrible, especially if you met in the middle.

Also, if any of you academic types are ever out at Penn State, I know a lot of people there who play.  And I could make it too.

This sounds like a really fun thing abstractly, but I'm generally pretty busy and it seems that people are pretty far away. I'm in the Philly area during the school year and Seattle during the summer (except when I'm not because I'm doing research somewhere else, which is actually most of the summer probably at this point).

in some areas it's hard to find a bus that goes long distances and the direction that you want to go at all.  one reason that we rely so much on personal vehicles is that our public transportation is lacking.  When I visited the United Kingdom, I was amazed by how efficiently there buses and trains operated.

People also sometimes underestimate the size of the United States. Even crossing one state sometimes is like Crossing 3 or 4 different countries in Europe.  And a trip from the west coast to the east coast or something? forget it!

On the map it seems like a lot of people are on the east coast, and a lot of people are within a reasonable drive of Chicago (including myself). Perhaps I could come up with a few locations that are possible and make a poll for how many people would be interested in meeting there.

How far are people willing to drive for something like this? That might affect which locations make the poll...

13 hour drive... I have done it before but would prefer flying.  Guess it would depend on the date. For driving, 6 hours is my maximum comfort zone probably.

(By the way, I live within ten minutes of Columbia's airport and have a pretty big house.   There is an amazing burger joint and a really cool board game shop here.)

Only between select cities and within major cities.

Mass transit is less feasible in the US than Europe partly because people are so dispersed.

It's deceptive. The distance between Pittsburgh (western PA) and Cincinnati is about the distance between Prague and Frankfurt, but fewer people in each city. Chicago to Cincinnati is the same distance -- from the other direction!

I'm central UK (Coventry), if any of the UK people (Rabid, Jack Rudd, Ozle etc.) wanted to come meet up for some Dominion I'm usually at board game meetings every Wednesday afternoon.

i am living in jersey, about 1.5 hrs from most places in NYC.  (Edison NJ, am a grad student at Rutgers.)

So what I think I'm going to do is start a poll asking "where would you travel to meet F.DS people and play Dominion with them IRL?" I want to know what to put as choices on that poll since I don't think I get to change them later. If one person suggests something it should go on the poll. Here's a list of what I think has been suggested so far, plus some logical additions based on the map:

North America
East Coast - New York
East Coast - Carolinas
Midwest - Chicago
Midwest - Detroit
Midwest - Indianapolis?
Midwest - Pittsburgh
South - Texas
West Coast - San Diego
West Coast - San Francisco
Northwest - Washington

Europe Disclaimer: I don't know how to approach this with any hope of getting a decent distribution of places that are logical. I need help with these.
