Regarding the BCS finale:

I don't think the cliffhanger is a cliffhanger. The screenplay has been super good so far, and that wouldn't fit at all into that.

And if they do kill off Chuck, I suppose they've been working to make use not feel as bad for him. It was bad enough that he was unsupportive of Jimmy going into law, but then they slapped on an admission that Jimmy didn't mean anything at all. This felt out of place to me.

I don't think I can agree with you here. Firstly, the admission was probably a lie? The flashback at the beginning (that's been referenced in their earlier conversation) aswell as his breakdown afterwards support that.

Secondly, I can sympathize much more with Chuck here. As it turns out, Chuck was 100% right about Jimmy the whole time. Perfectly reasonable not wanting someone like him in his firm considering his past (and present). And now Jimmy is even partly the reason he got fired (Chuck losing not only his family but his career, too?).

Inheritance, Quarry, Grandmarket

2 cost GMs starting on turn 8.

The Quarry + Inheritance sounds like anti-synergy to me. If you are going to be getting your Grand Markets by buying Estates, then Quarry isn't helping you there; it's just a Copper. If you are able to buy lots of real Grand Markets because you have Quarry in your deck, then Inheritance isn't making Grand Market that much easier to get. Though it does increase the supply of available Grand Markets by a lot.

Actually, Quarry is helping you a lot there because Grand Markets cost more than

I have done that before. Casino dealers and mathematicians know I'm right

That's probably why they use the corgi shuffle at casinos, right?

They do. Also seen in streamed poker tournaments

What did you see in Grave of the Fireflies? I know it's been discussed before in this thread, but I am curious. Among other flaws, I just couldn't get past how unlikeable the main character was.
inc. mini essay warning

The main character is somewhat unlikable because he's accurately resembling a kid, which is somewhat accurately based off of the authors own experiences (obviously he survived in real life, but his sister did starve). I don't expect a kid whose mother dies in a fire and whose standard of living suddenly plummets to act like an angel.

Grave of the Fireflies shows WW2 from a perspective that is ignored in other films in many other ways. Saving Private Ryan shows a solitary soldier's U.S. military perspective. Midway kind of shows the war from the Macro sense of the military side. Schindler's List shows the individual suffering of Jews in WW2 but both 1. demonstrates it and contextualizes it as a direct result of a "villian" enemy and 2. is primarily a film about Jews being saved, not about Jews dying.

GotF shows the perspective of the horrific, unavoidable cost of the incidental deaths of war. It's not a film about war heroics, it's not a film about soldiers, and it's not a film about villians or the enemy. It is about the pointlessly unnecessary deaths of a boy, his sister and his mother because from their perspective that is all that is really relevant. The war happened, and the war (mostly) caused this absurd suffering, irrespective of soldiers countries or bigotry.

Even if one accepts some macro-focused "need" for military intervention it's still important to truly accept and consider the perspective, and GotF does that excellently both with the direct, simply story and the well placed metaphorical imagery.

Comparing it to Spielberg films is not really fair. Spielberg has nothing interesting to say in his "war" movies at all.

Ok, I know people say Mine isn't that great and I can kinda see that. Mainly I was wondering this because Mine helps more the more shuffles you have left, so the earlier the better. I'd actually expect sifting to help, though the rest makes sense. But sifting would help you see your Mine faster. idk. I've heard Mine-BM is bad and that makes sense, and an engine would rather buy a Gold and hopefully draw it, or get more engine pieces. So Mine doesn't really have much use in the majority of kingdoms it's in, yes?

Yeah, I guess that's accurate. Mine is also nice when you can gain Silver easily; it can turn them into Golds. You use your buys on engine components and let the Silver-gainer and Mine take care of your economy. If you have some sort of remodel or TfB to use on excess Golds, so much the better.

Mine is usually worth picking up if there aren't any other terminal s, such as the First Game setup.

"usually" is definitely the wrong word, most terminals that don't cost 5 beat Mine most of the time. If there is trashing, sometimes even no Terminal beats Mine.
I've picked up a Mine a couple of times recently on two similar boards to trash coppers into CoTRs, which in both cases was the only way to thin. Felt good!

Mine can be really good w/ alt-treasure for sure. Fool's Gold is a big one, and I think of Crown and Charm. Treasures that make themselves obsolete or just worse than Gold at some point, like Potion and Quarry sometimes. Really any alt-treasure helps for more options. It'd be interesting to see a board w/ 2+ good treasures where you actually shouldn't buy a Mine.

Atleast in 90% of those boards you should nt buy Mine.

Ambassador gets you thin. usually only one of the players, though. (who will win)

remake is also super powerful, maybe even better than Chapel if there is a strong, spammable $3.

Also, thin= amount of stopcards, not amount of cards. so remodel can thin your deck, it's just awful at doing it.

i think it's as close as we can get. gaining additional Coppers and refusing to trash your own is more similar than our intuition suggests.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Trashing vs. Buying
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:45:25 am »
This "analysis" (it's really just stating is as some kind of incontrovertible answer) ignores any and all possibilities that your 5$ buy 1) Speeds up your future chapelling in itself or 2) slows down your enemies chapelling.

Trashing three Coppers speeds up your future Chapeling three times as much as Laboratory does, plus it also speeds up your current Chapeling by three Coppers. There is no card in the game that comes even close in that regard — Chapeling as much as you can is always better than buying a $5.

As far as luck is concerned, sure, you're behind if you draw that hand, but that's not a reason to put you almost another full shuffle worth of tempo behind by not taking full advantage of the Chapel when you draw it.

Archive and Hunting Party both set up your next chapel to hit more estates. Mountebank substantially hampers the enemies trashing as soon as it hits.  You are a full shuffle of chapel tempo, which is incredibly different than a shuffle full of tempo unless your gameplan is "trash into pure copperless engine", in which case yea I would not be considering the 5$.

Your comparisons fall short because they keep trying to oversimplify the situation way too much.

Okay what board are you buying Chapel on that you don't want to transition to a "pure copperless" deck? That's every Chapel board. That's the whole point of Chapel.

Trust literally everyone posting here - even the swingy outside Chance crazy luck scenarios at best barely benefit the player skipping Chapel trashes. It's just the wrong move. There's no single $5 buy that immediately undoes trashing 3-4 cards or enables trashing 3-4 more cards.

Do you think you are achieving productive discussion by removing the word "engine" from "pure copperless engine?

You are buying chapel in many, many games that don't involve straight engines. Copper has varying negative utility, and in games without straight engines copper often has less negative utility. I am not trying to suggest that copper has positive utility in chapel games.

I'd be more likely to "trust the majority" of you here if you didn't try and treat this as some "gotcha" rhetorical contest instead of a discussion.

O, have you ever opened Chapel/Banquet? Or t3 Banquet on an Engine board?

Dominion League / Season 22 - Announcing Matches/Streams
« on: June 02, 2017, 05:19:10 pm »
Announcing streams:

Announce your season 22 league match live streams in this thread.

If you don't want to miss any, use the notify button on the top right.
(also a good plan for your own scheduling thread)

Per streamed match, please post at most twice in this thread: Once to announce a couple of days in advance, and once to announce you go live right now.
If you want to discuss streams that have already finished, use the game reports thread.

When announcing, please (also) include UTC times - or you could work with the [time] tag as being described here. Keep in mind that people from around the world frequent the forums and they might not now what their offset to Pacific, CET, or Ruritania time is.
Providing a link in your announcement or signature really helps as well.

If you're also interested in non-league streams, enable notifications in this thread as well.

Announcing Matches:

If you don't want to stream but want to give others the opportunity to spectate your match, you can announce your match here, too.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • Please give us the correct Shuffle names so people can find your table.
  • Turn the "Spectator can talk to players" option off on your table.
  • If you want to talk to other spectators, you can try joining the Dominion Discord server: https://discord.gg/uJugrz9

Do you remember the periods with no ranked matchmaking, either on MF or shuffle where you often played exotic strategies, often the infamous minigame of leveling up your Trade Route/Forager? Well, I did that today aswell so I guess I've come full circle.

Also, the game is not that interesting, I just want to introduce the tool a redditor made:

http://windominion.com/EASwPly

It's not as good as salvager was to view logs, but atleast it has a nice visual aid for now if you want to look through a game. If you have ideas how to improve it, /u/magicjj is the creator and their post is still on the reddit frontpage. The code is also openscource if someone wants to improve it themselves.

Regarding the game: I think my opponent made the mistake of trashing their second forager, which opened the door for my deck as he couldn't get thin. The pileout was kinda cool, too, needing to develop an estate gained by trashing HG. If I hadn't been able to end the game there, I woul'd ve gotten a second develop on my last turn to improve food ratios and tried to go for double province turns.

Dominion League / S21 Champion Match: Monday May 29th, 17:00 UTC
« on: May 24, 2017, 09:51:45 pm »
It's time for a 5th champion! How am I so sure? Well, neither of the participants even got to the final so far, that makes it a pretty safe bet. Due to their league performance, aku chi has a 3 game lead over drsteelhammer, so aku will only need to win two games to secure the title.

The six kingdoms will be random

The stream will be here: www.twitch.tv/dominionstreams , the commentators will be announced when they're known.

Gamesou did have a win in that one turn you said he didn't; by piling lookouts, market squares and HP

On a board with no village or non terminal draw, Chariot race might slightly mitigate the downside of the attack, but definitely not antisynergize.
