I think articles that get to the blog should be first posted on the forums and edited after feedback from the community, especially if they don't come from the very top (like Adam or Dan, don't know if anyone else that good is writing articles right now).

That said, a "harsh" editor might be exactly what is needed to stop supbar information to get on the front page. As an implicated mudslinger, I would have no problem with Adam being part of the team running the blog, provided they would listen to feedback to the drafts posted here.

Man, I thought this was about the actual 2018 World Cup.

Don't be so socceronormative!

The interesting thing is that major criticism of Dominion was that it felt like two playing solitaire against each other. Now Empires made that explicitly untrue by providing lots of choices that depend on your opponent.

crj, I fail to see how this makes games more analytical, could your observation be explained by Empires just being new cards? I know that it happens for me: When an expansions comes out, I just buy cards and see what happens. Being more familiar with them brings back the analytical component. I do agree that Adventures is overall easier to learn, except a few cards.

I think the problem with card articles is that it is already required to have a nuanced understanding of the metagame to get something out of a meaningful card article. This is especially true in Empires. Someone who doesn't understand the value of drawing your deck every turn will have a vastly different experience with Wild Hunt that those who do. Then you would have to explain why that is true and have a chapter on Engine 101 and it turns into a thesis where you have to explain basic concepts for the first couple of pages. After all, that information will be a lot more useful than anything specific you could say about Wild Hunt.

So I think it's much more important to explain concepts, which will make a lot of the cards appear easier. (For example, someone should write an article how VP are overrated, most of the time). That alone takes a lot of heachache away from Empires.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: No log anymore
« on: August 22, 2017, 09:52:18 am »
With Version 1.2.13 in the result page the log gets replaced by numbers of cards in the decks.

The log was more helpful for "reverse engeneering". Any way to get it? Why not just amending the numbers to the log?

Stef on the Shuffle forum:

"agree that it would be better to have both, and it also could/should be easier to access previous games, or that at least it would be very nice to have all that.

The reason for removing the log from end of game now is a bit technical; the information on the end-of-game screen was a mix between information from the gameserver and information from the metaserver. Now that you're only connected to one, it was easier to present information from only the metaserver. Off course that could be solved by sending the gamelog from game->meta->client, and it will probably work that way in some future release.
Modify message"

So the log will come back at some point and it disappeared for technical reasons.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Dungeon
« on: August 18, 2017, 07:42:39 am »
I think it's good to necro those threads.

I agree with Dingan, Dungeon is atleast WAY stronger than Warehouse. Most duds happen at the start of the turn, and Warehouse doesn't help much there. (Except you're lucky and draw it at the beginning. But if that's the case, a village might have been just as good).

So in deck drawing decks that are not 100% reliable, having 2 Dungeons often makes them super reliable.

Breppert once posted a nice example of this on discord, it was something like this: You have your starting cards, 2mountebanks, 4 villages and 3 smithies (or something similar), would you rather add 4villages +4smithies or have a duration dungeon in play? (hint: dungeon is really good)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What would you open here?
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:49:42 pm »
Every time I discount the importance of Sauna/Avanto even just a little bit, I get crushed. So I would open Sauna/Silver here.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I really thought I could beat Sauna/Avanto the other day, with different trashing and villages. And I was cursing them while they were busy buying all 5 Saunas. I still got crushed, though.

You don't beat Sauna/Avanto by outjunking them, you beat Sauna/Avanto by playing a better engine (i.e. Scrying Pool)

So you're implicitly assuming I wasn't building an engine. And you're also implying that I shouldn't have bought a junking attack at all?

I don't know why you would assume the former. He was implying that you're engine better be very strong if you ingore Sauna, not that you didn't build one. Also he probably was implying the latter, since that is good advice vs Sauna decks.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Silly boards you got from randomisers
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:36:18 am »
Your board reminds me of something: Rabid and I played a board once where we gained ~17 Villages combined (okay, a few of them were Lost Cities) even though the only terminal we bought were one Spice merchant each which we never played terminally. Forager was the only other action we got, and I think we played it ok

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Dominion: Nocturne announced!
« on: August 15, 2017, 12:44:55 pm »
I really hope we get s cool throne variant in this expansion. Dominion can always use more throne variants
Am I missing something, or is there no generic name in general use for "things like Throne Room" in the same way we talk about "villages"?

In turn, that means I'm not managing to find a comprehensive list of them on the wiki. Um... Throne Room, King's Court, Procession, Disciple, Royal Carriage, Prince?

Where's left to go? ISTR Donald contemplated and rejected a Duration version: choose a card, play it this turn and next. Do-four-times would be clearly overpowered.

Prince isn't usually considered a throne room variant. Crown from Empires is another one.

Dominion League / Season 23 - Announcing Matches/Streams
« on: July 28, 2017, 05:07:01 pm »
Announcing streams:

Announce your season 22 league match live streams in this thread.

If you don't want to miss any, use the notify button on the top right.
(also a good plan for your own scheduling thread)

Per streamed match, please post at most twice in this thread: Once to announce a couple of days in advance, and once to announce you go live right now.
If you want to discuss streams that have already finished, use the game reports thread.

When announcing, please (also) include UTC times - or you could work with the [time] tag as being described here. Keep in mind that people from around the world frequent the forums and they might not now what their offset to Pacific, CET, or Ruritania time is.
Providing a link in your announcement or signature really helps as well.

If you're also interested in non-league streams, enable notifications in this thread as well.

Announcing Matches:

If you don't want to stream but want to give others the opportunity to spectate your match, you can announce your match here, too.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • Please give us the correct Shuffle names so people can find your table.
  • Turn the "Spectator can talk to players" option off on your table.
  • If you want to talk to other spectators, you can try joining the Dominion Discord server: https://discord.gg/uJugrz9

Dominion League / Season 23 - Results
« on: July 28, 2017, 04:57:12 pm »
Please post your results for all Season 22 matches here.
  • Make it a simple post with one line. Include both players names and the final score.
  • This thread is only for finished matches. Partial results go here.
  • Always play exactly 6 games.
  • We score games, not matchpoints.
  • First-player order is irrelevant, as long as both players end up going first 3 times.
Please also post in this thread whether you want to play next season rather than your scheduling thread.

Hi everyone,

shortly before the new season starts, we'll end our previous season with its last and most prestigous match, determining the Season 22 champion. One time champion Markus will be challenged by Rabid, who will need 4,5 out of the 6 points to claim the title. Boards will be randomly selected.

The stream will be here: www.twitch.tv/dominionstreams

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry

Dear my opponent, I'm truly sorry that I discarded your Sea Hag with mine on the first shuffle. And on the second one. I guess the third time in a row was the worst, though.

Turn 3 - drsteelhammer
..
d plays a Sea Hag.
M discards a Sea Hag.
M gains a Curse.

Turn 6 - drsteelhammer
...
d plays a Sea Hag.
M discards a Sea Hag.
M gains a Curse.

Turn 7 - drsteelhammer
....
d plays a Sea Hag.
M discards a Sea Hag.
M gains a Curse.

Do not play Swiss system when you're not playing 2-player games. I assumed that it is a requirement.

Some comments/responses to Landmark remarks so far:

The Top 3 look good, altough I would have switched Keep with Wall. Keep significantl changes almost every game it's in, Wall often only mildly alters your buys.

Fountain: I ranked it at #4 aswell, which seems to have some opposition. Yes, 10 coppers are bad, but a 15VP swing it very significant (it even swings from +15->+-0 ->-15). We probably already agree that it's brilliant alt vp if there is no copper trashing, but there are still money games, slogs (try beating duchy/duke+fountain with provinces) and also engines that have the capacity to gain a few coppers a turn at the end of the game. (Gaining two beggars midturn on my last turn on a board with no +buy is one of my favourite dominion experiences this year!)

Tower: I have it at 5. I blame all the guys who voted it so low for their lack of creativity, it opens up so many possiblities which are game changing. Not many Landmarks can do this.

Defiled Shrine at 6: Uh, slightly overrated by me back then. Still, only one person gets the VP so it's a signifcant swing for a low cost (sometimes).

I had Obelisk at #10, and I am wrong and so are we all, apparently. Buying bad cards for VP doesn't make the cards better.

Bandit Fort at #15. Why are guys buying Yellow cards?

Rest looks ok, altough I have Baths and Battlefield a litle higher and Colonade lower, but that seems nitpicky.

Game Reports / Sometimes you gotta bid $1
« on: June 29, 2017, 12:27:52 am »
Just had this amusing game; Kingdom was:

Vineyard, Crossroads, Scheme, Ironworks, Sacrifice, Highway, Trading Post, Treasury, Wharf, Forge, Scouting Party and Mountain Pass

Pretty good support for Vineyard, which my opponent went for, but I felt the engine was good enough to get 8 Provinces. I opened 5/2 and decided to skip Trading Post, trying to thin with Forge. Well, things didn't go that well for me, I didn't really get a lot of Wharfs into play (or in my deck) and my turns where quite mediocre while my opponent almost emptied the piles. Fortunately, they decided to empty Schemes, Crossroads and Vineyards instead of Ironworks so that got me a bit of time, but it was still quite hopeless. So my last hope was Mountain Pass, allowing my opponent to make a mistake. I was ready to pass to a bid, but I got even got $12. I think my opponent thought he could still by Vineyards with debt, but oh well. Friendly reminder not to overbid :)

Also, how was my build order? Surely I should have gotten more Wharfs after the first 1-2 Highways, right?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The swingiest card ever
« on: June 26, 2017, 03:43:12 pm »
Swingy in Dominion context means that it's quite luck dependant -> the less skilled player is more likely to win, right?

If so, I think Chapel is one of the least swingy cards in the game. My vote would go to either Swindler or Jack

Is it crazy in game 3 to get a tunnel trashing hovel instead of a second silver? it doesnt make your deck worse and you'd probably get to activate it later on when you want some more money.

edit: nice mandarin!
