Dominion General Discussion / Re: Semi-Interesting Dominion Moments Thread
« on: November 27, 2017, 12:41:42 pm »
An IRL game with no trashing where we both ended up with enormous, bloated, miserable decks.
And we _still_ managed to hit each other's single Fortune with Swindler.

Rules Questions / Gain to hand vs Haunted Woods
« on: November 16, 2017, 11:23:49 am »
Lots of 'gain to hand' in Nocturne. So,
do you first gain to hand, then topdeck your hand to the Haunted woods
or
first topdeck what ever you have, then gain the new card to hand?

Cost: $2
Action
Play this as if it were an Action in the supply costing at least $3 of the player to you left's choice. This is that card until this leaves play.
also known as "underlord"
or "middle management"

Wolf's Den - Fortune.
Will you take the 3vp penalty to buy one? Will you scrape up the cash/debt for a second?
(We took a penalty each.)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: REQ: How to handle playing errors, either unintended or intentional
« on: July 15, 2017, 05:46:37 am »
I'm occasionally accused by my fellow players of being 'overly helpful' in reminding others of stuff (mostly in resources in Settlers of Catan, but also in instances of Dominion). My rule of thumb; 'If it would happen automatically in an online game (due to computer AI deciding it), then I remind someone who forgets. If it's optional, I don't.'.

the Grand Scheme of things
Cost 7, action
+2 coins
+1 action
+1 card
+1 buy
During clean-up you may topdeck a card that would be discarded from play this turn
---
You may not buy this card if you have any coppers in play.

Haven't played this game yet, but:
Young Witch + Castles as the Bane pile...
(Rest of the board: count, poor house, rebuild.., Enchantress, Legionary, Wild hunt, conspirator, counting house, quarry. defiled shrine and fountain)
Can't play it before 10 days, since the Empires box is wrapped up under the tree. I'm thinking rebuild loves the Castles?

« on: December 07, 2016, 02:35:26 am »I'm pretty proud of getting this joke, so I'll explain!
Awesome. I was in the middle of typing up a "please explain" post when it hit me.
I'm going to need an explanation.
The meme implies that Marauder is in the setup, which means ruins have been being distributed. Presumably your opponent also bought a Marauder or three so you probably have Ruins.
Inn has a feature that allows you to shuffle action cards from your discard pile into your deck, but if you choose to shuffle all of those actions into your deck, you might shuffle ruins into your deck! That would be quite the conundrum!
I thought it was because you'd get your Marauders - but it would take longer to get the accompanying Spoils into your hand since you filled up the drawdeck instead of shuffling. So you could generate more Spoils, but never get around to using them.

IRL game where having to keep clear track of trashed cards, when exactly they went to trash and when to shuffle was a must;
Rogue, Junk Dealer, Procession, Scrying Pool, Noblemen, Peasant, Salvager, and Courtyard. (Noone bothered with Talisman or Counting House).
No, seriously, Discipling Processing Rogues when SP/Noblemen draw the deck is a headache.
And it's the first time I've seen someone Salvaging Teachers as their final turn.

Kind of minor, but if you grab the last card off the top of a split pile with Messenger's on-buy, nobody else gets one!
I did something similar with the Knights pile; the last one of the pile was the $4 cost.

My son made a curses-and-ruins game (his favourite type.. Ambassador, seahag, possession, Ratcatchers, Venture, Bank, golem, Marauder, rats, can't remember the last), and I wanted to try Wolf's Den (wrote it on a Post-It note - we don't have Empires yet).
Final scores: -2 (husband noticed the 3-pile sneaking up and managed to get enough spoils to buy two provinces)/-21/-23.
We emptied curses, ruins and Catratchers.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's discuss Alchemy cards: Vineyard
« on: July 03, 2016, 04:38:10 pm »
We just got the Alchemy set, and played one game with Vineyard (random Alchemy/Adventures board; Pilgrimage/ Giant, Bridge Troll, Apprentice, Familiar, Vineyard, Alchemist, Port, Transmogrify, Herbalist, Ratcatcher).
One had their Vineyards worth 3pt, the other 5 pts, mine were 6 points each. What is the usual result?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Beginners' mistakes
« on: June 24, 2016, 06:04:09 am »
I'm fine with some variation. In our playgroup, we have a left-handed player who puts the deck on the right, discard on the left. Another plays his actions right-to-left instead of left-to-right. I've played with someone who put +actions in a kind of "tree" layout (putting the two actions below the village to the left and right to keep track of which actions were used. Weird, but effective. I sometimes do something similar with TR or KC splits if they're cascading on each other)
We always do the tree-layout - it's so easy to see if you have free actions left, without needing to count. Two corners on the villages, straight down on the +1 actions, bigger fan shape for things like KC-village, terminals can't have anything.
Put the next card high to cover the coin on Minion if you didn't use it for money, otherwise place the next card low enough that you can see the coin.
Play-area left to right, except my husband who prefers right to left (and if he and another player are on the same side of the table, put a glass between the decks so they don't suddenly have a common discard pile...).
We are pretty pedantic about stuff - but we always _explain_ to newcomers immediately WHY good habits matter. (Put down your money because of cards like Grand Market. Put it in order because of Bank. Don't discard Wharf before end of turn, because you might be shuffling in between.) Most people understand about habits. Even if you don't need it in this game (there is no Bank, for example), practice helps you remember the habit when you need it.

Messenger or Ambassador on a split pile - how does that work? Do you stop when you run out of the similarly named card, or continue digging down the pile?

I'm not sure I get how D(et)onate works. "After your turn", that means after discarding everything from play, right? But is it before or after drawing 5 cards? And how do you "shuffle your hand into your deck", when everything is already in your hand?
