Dominion General Discussion / Re: Homage to the Best Card

I always like to point out that the single most popular song in 1969 - the year of Woodstock and Abbey Road - was this one.

When it's my wife and me, we take turns choosing all 10 kingdom cards (plus colonies/shelters.) When I played a 5p game with some friends the other day, one of them dealt out 4 cards to each of us and we chose 2 from the set of 4 to use.

Events are going to require a slightly new strategy, but it's going to be fun.

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: Procession Hireling
« on: April 23, 2015, 10:58:51 am »
Now, if I am to understand correctly, if you procession a procession that is processioning a hireling, am to guess that nothing stays out, the procession that is processing hireling is trashed, and that you still draw 2 cards at the start of your turn?

You were so focused on whether you could do it, you never stopped to ask yourself whether you should.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Card Sleeves
« on: March 15, 2015, 05:24:48 pm »
Yeah, I got the Mayday sleeves and I am quite satisfied with them. My wife hates shuffling them but I find it easier (I have to do it differently, but that's fine.) I will often have to replace one or two for every game, but they are so much cheaper than the cards that it's definitely worth it. Frankly, it's an investment; the sleeves will help the cards last longer, so I earn more sessions by sleeving.

Until I saw the horizontal scroll on the bottom, I didn't even see Dominion there.

I actually used Chancellor quite effectively IRL today.

Real life as in "a physical game of Dominion," or real life as in actual real life? Did you effectively discard your hand and if so, why?

A board of all Durations is literally not possible because there are only 8.

You could use Prince, Treasury, and/or Scheme to make up the difference? They are like Duration cards in a vague sense.

Good Guy Greg knows that making sure everyone has a good time (IRL at least) is more important than crushing his opponents by a few more points. He won't let you win, as such, but he knows how not to aggravate you.

Nobody did this yet, right?

Obvious meme is obvious.

Classic meme is classic anyways.

("while this is on play, whenever one would draw a card, gain an action instead; whenever one would gain an action, draw a card instead").

I think if you worded it exactly like that, you could argue that it causes an infinite loop.

Yeah. The name PPR can be quite confusing, since the concept isn't limited to penultimate things or Provinces and it's not a rule.

Other than that it's quite accurate.

How do you know that they're not talking about a man? "That Scout doesn't seem very competent, I think you should have a Silver instead."

Well, I figured the Dominion-equivalent was just that there were multiple women and no men on the card.

By my estimation, the only card to pass the Bechdel Test is Trader.

That should give it a couple of points.

One of the big advantages of reading the books before seeing the movies was, when I went to see The Hunger Games in the theater and had to go to the bathroom really bad, I knew when a quiet, non-plot-critical scene was coming up so I went then and didn't miss much.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Pricing the Prizes
« on: June 16, 2014, 08:33:58 am »
Yeah, I would be looking to have a whole stack of 10 cards. I can use the blank cards to fill in.

ETA: So I would have 1 prize card in one game, like a stack of 10 Bags of Gold or whatever, with no other prizes available.

And I do realize that it will be unbalanced no matter what price they are, but I would like to reduce the amount of unbalanced that they are. And I would probably go with Princess or Diadem in an actual game, since they never end up getting picked up when we use Tournament (I get Trusty Steed and Followers, and then never worry about getting any more prizes.)

So the reason the prize cards are not kingdom cards is that they aren't really balanced. Fair enough. But I tend to play casual RL games, and furthermore my wife (and primary playing partner) has been perpetually stymied in her efforts to actually play one of the prize cards by never being able to line up provinces and tournaments.

So given all that, if any of the prize cards WERE used as kingdom cards, how much would each one cost? And would it be necessary to tinker with what any card does to make it more viable?

This one came to me in a dream:

Silver Thread
Cost: 3$

Each other player who owns any object on the table or playing surface that is not related to Dominion, trashes their discard pile, hand, and any duration cards in play.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: DIY Dominion Storage
« on: February 03, 2014, 06:23:25 pm »
I currently have 6 sets (4 large, 2 small). I sleeved them all with the Mayday sleeves (which, it turns out, make shuffling a bit of a pain, but I heard they get better after a while).

I actually use the boxes for storage - what I did was take out the black insets that the card go in, and laid down a piece of cardboard, and glued/nailed a couple of pieces of cardboard upright for dividers. I used cardstock to divide the sets of cards themselves. (They stick out over the top of the box, but they are sturdy enough and there are enough of them that putting the lid on isn't an issue).

I didn't really know how much space this would take up, so I did one large box and one small box. I am able to fit all my cards in the large box, and I keep the mats and the tokens in the small box. If I ever get the other 3 expansions I don't have, I can put them in the small box.

I don't know how good of a long-term solution this is, but if either of the boxes wear out I kept the others and can replace them. Since I mostly did this for ease of choosing cards while at home, as I rarely take the game with me anywhere, it seems to work so far.

245
Well, Witch costs the same and doesn't give opponents +1 card in addition to the curse, so the number of coin tokens it gives should be roughly equal to the expected average value of 2 cards. What that is depends on the deck, of course, but drawing 2 coppers doesn't seem that unreasonable I guess, which means the flexibility of the tokens cancels out the benefit to the opponent. So maybe I will try it with 2.

246
Soothsayer is often described as the only curser that is not thematic to its set. (I feel Mountebank is a little tenuous, but okay).

But what if it gave coin tokens instead of a gold? How would that work? It would be thematic, but I don't have a good handle on how many tokens it should give to be roughly as powerful as it is now, and I don't have enough experience with the game to make an informed decision.

After all coin tokens are less powerful than treasure in that they are one-shot, but more powerful in that they can be used as needed and don't take up deck space. So would 3 be a good amount of tokens, or is that too few or too many to keep Soothsayer at its current cost?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Remembering Your First Game of Dominion
« on: January 04, 2014, 10:12:40 am »
Way back in November 2012, some friends my wife and I knew from church invited us over to play "Dominion", which they kept describing as if we were supposed to know what it was. Well, we figured it might be worth checking out; we had several games we liked playing with people. So we headed over to their place. There were 5 people; the hosts, us, and one other guy we knew whose wife was absent. We played a couple of games using cards from the base game, Intrigue, and Hinterlands. The temporarily-single guy bought a bunch of Harems, both games, leading to lots of really bad jokes. I bought lots of Traders so I would be safe from curses. And so on.

We liked it so much we wanted to play it again some time. They said that if we got an expansion they didn't have, that would increase the variety we had. They specifically recommended Seaside and warned against Alchemy. So for Christmas 2012, my wife bought me Seaside and the Base Card Set.

Well, somehow, we never ended up playing against them again. And we have since moved halfway across the country. But for Christmas 2013, I got the 5th set (Hinterlands, after Seaside, Dark Ages, Prosperity, and Guilds) which has pretty much forced me to try to find a better way to store the cards. Digging through 5 boxes is CRAZY. But all those other games we used to play are still boxed up from the move 9 months ago, and we have introduced it to as many people as we can.

Rules Questions / Re: Can Poor House cost you money?
« on: December 30, 2013, 07:41:32 pm »
I suppose it's largely a moot point - since the card gives no other benefit, there is no reason to play it with 4 or more treasures in had - except for the edge cases of TR, Golem, HoP, conspirator, etc.

Maybe I'll house rule it anyways. I am not playing on Goko or in tournaments, after all.

« on: December 30, 2013, 07:00:40 pm »
Huh, all this time I thought what the Poor House itself was adding was a minimum of 0, not all the treasure you had total. So if I play Festival and then Poor House and reveal the 5 coppers, the PH goes from +4 to +0, leaving me a total of 7 to spend. Is this not so?

I of course have plenty, but the most relevant seems to be "I, card arena oaf". Which describes what would happen if I tried playing in a tournament, I guess.
