Game Reports / An Improbable Engine
« on: March 02, 2013, 01:47:04 pm »
I really wanted to build an engine on this set. It seem that many of the typical engine pieces are missing or quite weak.  I almost backed out when I saw the lack of +Buy, also Trading Post is not very good trasher for an engine, and Throne Room is not an ideal source of actions for this board. There are a lot of little things that help the engine in this board.  The engine has almost unlimited time to catch up to a money player with Fairgrounds and Monument as alternative sources of points. Militia, also slows down the money player a fair amount.

It end up being a really long game, where my opponent nearly piledrives the Provinces, but stalls out just a bit too early, and I am able to keep getting points consistently with TR/Monument.  This game was intersting because with no +Buy I consistantly spent 8-16 coin hands on 4 cost cards. Finally, I didn't even look at Contraband, and it was REALLY good here, so that's a pretty big miss

Contraband, Explorer, Fairgrounds, Militia, Monument, Outpost, Smithy, Throne Room, Trading Post, and Wishing Well

Woah, top 10.  That is something, I never thought I'd get to.  I did get a pretty crazy amount of luck lately going 23-2 in the last few days to get up here.

I have pretty mixed feelings about whether or not you want Militia early.  Obviously forcing your opponent off of a 5 or 7 hand is huge.  I think you have to start getting Wharf as early as possible though, and I'm not sure which I would play in the collision.  I guess my biggest reason not to is that it seems like the extra terminal can hurt your chances to hit $5/7 almost as bad as your opponent.  I think not getting as my Wharfs because of the extra terminal is not an option since large hands are critical to the engine. I suspect it is pretty close whether you want an early Militia or not.

There is definitely an engine on this board.  The biggest problem is getting it started.  You can probably see that KC/Wharf/Conspirator can make a strong engine.  The problem is with no cantrip cards, Conspirator is a terminal Silver until you get the engine running.

I think the best way to mitigate that is to open Silver/Silver.  King's Court is quite expensive at 7, so you will need some silver to get to it.  The question then becomes what terminal is most important in the early game.  The choice is between Wharf/Conspirator/Militia.  Conspirator doesn't do anything for you at the beginning.  Militia may slow down your opponent from getting to King's Court, but I think Wharf is going to be the most useful.

I think this game is somewhat of a race to play King's Court on Wharf first.  Once that is done once, the engine should be able to roll.  Despite being really slow to set up, the engine is really strong.  In a sample game below, I was able to get 74 points in 14 turns.

I think against money adding a Militia once things are set up would really slow them down, but I doubt you would need to to win.  In the engine mirror, Militia shouldn't make much of a difference as you will both be starting with 10-15 card hands.  In the engine I would probably try and race down Conspirator and King's Court while trying to get 4-5 Wharfs.  I suspect the Engine mirror would 3 pile pretty quickly, so you really have to be careful with that.

Game Reports / A game where Throne Room is key for the Engine
« on: February 04, 2013, 07:05:39 pm »
This was one of those games were you first look at the set and know there is an engine, but it takes a long time to figure out what it is.  With Throne Room as the only village, it took a while to build an engine on this board, but once it was up and going it was quite strong.  Margrave with Masquerade make for a strong attack, and Monument allow you to come back from any number of points down.  My biggest problem was that 8 Throne Rooms wasn't enough to let me play all my actions, but it was close enough.  Wharf was key in creating the large hand size that you need to do this kind of weird engine.  In the end I felt kinda bad playing these huge turns against an opponent who wasn't to far Masq into BM Tact.

Nothing like a good Coppersmith engine.  Turns out copper is pretty good if its worth 7 each :).  I was pretty surprised how fast this set up, but it was defiantly an engine board.

... ajmiam reveals a Trader to gain a Silver instead of a Cache.

I think this speaks for itself.

I did this with death cart today. Then you don't even get the "bonus" silvers or the DC/C.

I also click end turn all the time on goko instead of play treasures, but when I do play my treasures, it blocks a farmland remodel since you can't undo.

Game Reports / Border Village/Wharf/Treasure Map
« on: January 25, 2013, 01:49:48 am »
The first thing I saw in this set was Treasure Map/Warehouse, which is often a dominant strategy.  After a second look I decided to build a BV/Wharf Engine since BV/Farmland are quite good together, and the engine sounded better.

I was able to build up a nice BV/Wharf engine competing with tat for the Wharfs, util they were gone on turn 8.  Once I had my whole deck I figured I needed some money; I was about to buy gold/silver with my turn 9, until I realized how nice Treasure Map is in a deck like this.  One of my favorite things in Dominion is trying to realize the few cases a "bad" card is awesome.  From there the game went real fast with a lot of Farmlands and that sort of thing.

Game Reports / Madman/Horn of Plenty Megaturn
« on: January 15, 2013, 02:01:42 am »
I've been playing a little dark ages over on goko.  This was an interesting set in that Hermit/Madman was really good.  Hermit helped to trash the Young Witch curses and Madman was the only +Action and the only +Cards, but I was able to get a megaturn with it buying 7 Provinces at 2 Colonys.  I'm pretty sure I did a horrible job of setting this up but it worked none the less, and it was really fun :)

I can confirm pretty much everything GendoIkari said.  Chrome seems to be much more stable with iso on my ipad.  I haven't hand any trouble with info not updating.  I always play veto mode on my ipad to get rid of cards that you have to drag to order.

Doesn't "over building" an engine when you are ahead increase your chances of winning? Usually if I'm ahead, I'll try to make my engine bigger, and more reliable. Essentially if I'm ahead in an engine game I green at the same time as my opponent, which is later than I'd green against the same deck I have. With a more powerful engine you can always catch up.

I'm not really sure what I was thinking going for Pstone on this board.  I sure wasn't thinking this was how it would turn out.  Some how I ended up winning with a deck that was almost entirely Smuggled

Apothecary, City, Colony, Harvest, Lighthouse, Loan, Market, Navigator, Philosopher's Stone, Platinum, Potion, Smugglers, and Transmute

I'm with ftl.  Below is a game where i open 5/2 Mountebank against a 4/3 and get killed because he gets lucky on the next 2 shuffles. Hopefully me getting crushed will give you some hope next time you find yourself behind at the start.

I'm with RJ, but had a few thoughts of my own.  I really like the engine on this board.  It really breaks down into 2 games, the engine mirror, or engine vs. BM.  Generically, I like Silver/Warehouse as an opening in order to allow Highway/Hamlet T3/T4.  I think you would be too short on money early with out 1 Silver, but that silver is pretty useless later.

In the case of Engine vs. BM Oracle, I think the engine player could put an Embargo or 2 on the Provinces.  The engine player who can get around it with Watchtower/Smugglers or just end it with a mega turn so the never "see" the curses in there deck.  With the Highway/Hamlets uncontested I would expect it to end in a mega turn, but I'm not sure.

In the engine mirror Hamlet/Highway will be very contested, and whoever wins that split I think will likely win the game.  I imagine this ending in a 3 pile of Hamlet/Highway, and maybe Watchtower.  Whoever has more +Buys will have an advantage in the ability to 3 pile.

I thought smugglers is normally an opening card when it's worthwhile? o_O

Well, I don't claim to understand, Smugglers very well, but here are my thoughts.  In this game a smuggler open isn't good since it wont get you a fast Mountebank.  You see your opponent has a 5/2 before you buy the smugglers.  If I were him I would not buy Mountebank T3/T4 to deny you that smuggle.  There are lots of other good 5/6 cards that would help him after he has a Mountebank.

I think the reason Smugglers could be good here is the idea of smuggling Grand Markets, Wharfs and Bazaars.  I think might be able to get some use out of a T3 Smugglers, but I would probably avoid it altogether.  I don't know though, Smugglers is probably one of my worst cards.

He had a 5/2 opening against your 4/3 on a Mountebank board.  You are already behind in that he has a Mountebank on T1 and you don't, but there's nothing you can do about that.

The biggest choice for you is how to get Mountebank as fast as possible, and Potion/Smugglers is probably not the fastest way.  University allows you to get lots of 5 cost action cards in your deck, but it is really slow to allow you to play the first one.  Step 1 buy Potion, step 2 buy university, step 3 play university for 5 cost action, step 4 reshuffle and wait for action to come around. I think smugglers is good here since there are so many good actions to smuggle, but probably not this early.

I'm not sure on this but I would probably open Caravan/Silver on this since the Caravan will help you in the future, and 1 Silver is fine.  This gives you a pretty high chance of getting a Mountebank T3/T4.  The only thing higher is Silver/Silver, but I'm not sure its worth it for the small improvement in hitting 5.

Mountebank more than just about any other card in the game is important to get early and play often.  Since it gives you 2 bad cards it really slows down your deck early in the game, so while you can sometimes delay getting a Witch with a Wharf engine or something, you typically cannot do that with Mountebank.  Mountebank also has that built in reaction, so It doesn't help as much to get multiples as it does with other curses.  Your goal is to get the first few Curse/Copper into his deck as fast as possible.  After that the reaction will make it a little swingy, so it is probably best to transition into an engine in this board.

All the time. I could really go for some idiot proofing. I occasionally do this to militia too, thinking its the start of my turn and discarding my best action cards. Maybe there should be some mechanism different than how you would start your turn. I don't know.

Also maybe a way to unplay vanilla treasures. Counterfeit is not so great after you hit play all treasures.

Game Reports / Crazy Comback
« on: December 29, 2012, 04:57:38 pm »
I lost the Curse war 6/4 to start the game.  From there I continued to build an engine with a horrible deck that never seemed to improve.  My opponent went roughly BM Witch, and was up 28 to -3, and with 2 piles empty was looking to empty one of a few that were down to 4 copies.  We are 27 turns in and I still haven't been able to buy any green. Finally my engine kicked into gear, a lot stronger than I expected.

I was sure I had lost this game.  I opened Potion/Herbalist, which is a little questionable with Witch out there.  I figured an early Apothecary would get me to witch fast enough, and the extra cycling would help.  My plan was to get a few Apothecarys and try and split the Curses fairly evenly.  After that I wanted to get Native Villages and use those with Apothecary to put only Curses/Green on my NV mat.  Next I wanted to transition out of this with Scrying Pool to draw my whole deck.  Finally I was hoping to end the game with one of several options Scrying Pool/Vault to discard actions and draw them all back with 1 SP, Horn of Plenty Megaturn, or just some sort of Haggler/Fairgrounds play.

The Native Village "Trashing" was very slow but it did clean up my deck in a set with now other trashing.  I was able to eventually put all of my Curses/Green on the mat.  Once I got that I started to draw my deck and was able to run away with it.  I really thought for most of this game that this would be to slow, but it sound really fun, and I was determined to stick to it.  This ended up being one of the most fun games I've played in ages!

Apothecary, Fairgrounds, Haggler, Harem, Herbalist, Horn of Plenty, Native Village, Potion, Scrying Pool, Vault, and Witch

« on: December 29, 2012, 12:38:28 am »
I think with embargo out there he could have won by just [an Alchemy card]/Bishop

Surely you see the problem with this...

I assume the problem is that I didn't capitalize Embargo  :).  It may also be that you can likely just embargo University.  In this case I don't think that that is a problem.  To get two Universities you would at most get 2 Curses, and when you plan is to play Bishop to trash a ton of stuff I don't think that matters much.

I'm sure that with all the Bishop trashing the opponent could trash the curses he gets from Embargoed Provinces, but that is still a hand with 1 less card, and would probably be enough to slow down a Provincing player.

Game Reports / Trading Post 2 Provinces -> Silver
« on: December 28, 2012, 06:12:04 pm »
This was a pretty fun way to end the game.  My hand was 2X Provinces Trading Post 2X Silver and a Venture.  I was up by 15 so I trashed 2 Provinces to allow me to buy the last 1 and win.

This is an interesting board.  I think with embargo out there he could have won buy just University/Bishop and never buying points if he put 2/3 Embargos on Provinces.  I also made the worst Embargo possible on T4.

Bank, Bishop, Embargo, Horse Traders, Laboratory, Potion, Royal Seal, Trading Post, University, Venture, and Woodcutter

Help! / Swindler Double Tactician?
« on: December 28, 2012, 02:41:26 am »
This board is a mess.  I'm really not quite sure where to go.  I see BM Courtyard, which is always good, a Swindler double Tactician, and a Courtyard Worker's Village draw engine.  I went for the Swindler Double Tact, and failed miserably.  tat (my opponent) did a great job of balancing money with Tactician and keeping a fairly simple deck.  One of the most interesting choices is whether or not to get a chapel, and how aggressively to trash.

I think the Chapel/Swindler engine would beat any big money pretty badly since it could get so many swindler plays and get rid of so many Silver/Coppers into Great Hall/Shanty Town/Curse.

I'm pretty sure i had fairly bad luck with Swindler and that is part of why I lost, but I'm also sure I didn't play this optimally. What I'm wondering how you play a board that is this fluid and what direction you think is best.

Border Village, Chapel, Contraband, Courtyard, Great Hall, Nomad Camp, Shanty Town, Swindler, Tactician, and Worker's Village

It was really fun to play against DG, but unfortunately he had pretty awful shuffle luck.  Almost every match was a mirror, and I just happend to win all of them.  I'll post some more comments about them when I'm home.
