Yes, I am having 1/5 games crash right now.

Edit: My 99th post is reply 99 to this thread; neat :)

Innovation Game Reports / Industrialization Mega Board
« on: July 27, 2013, 07:00:28 pm »
I'm just starting to get into echos games.  I had heard that Industrialization was pretty strong in echos.  This is by far the biggest board I've ever built.  It was interesting to try and look at the echo effects in each stack.

No! Now I have to play with Black Market again... :(

So much hate for this card. For me it's a love hate relationship. I do like it enough to play the adventures, and that's saying something!

Now I get to waste 2 hrs playing adventures! Yay.

I like the Cutpurse/Silver opening, I would consider Cutpurse/Warehouse even, but I think its too vulnerable to the Cutpurse attack.  Warehouse like diversity in your deck and large hand size, the best 5 out of 8 cars is much better than the best 4 out of 7 (if you get Soothsayer attacked).  The Gold from Soothsayer is also great with Warehouse.

I would not have bought a Sea Hag on T3.  Even though he has an Embargo, it doesn't hurt you that much.  If he gets Embargo on Soothsayer before you buy one, you can still buy one.  The curse you get from that is similar to one bad shuffle where your Curser misses the shuffle and your opponents doesn't.  Even so you can consider a Sea Hag on turn 4 if you get unlucky and end up with 4 coins, but I think you could go either way with it.

T6 I would probably grab a Warehouse since you already have 2 terminals, you don't really need a third, especially when Warehouse is going to give you fast cycling.  I think you want a second Soothsayer since the Gold and Cursing are good, but its harder to justify as your 4th terminal action, so another reason to skip the second Cutpurse.  From there you saw the game ending and rushed points very well, the only thing I'd change is T16 I'd get a Warehouse; you have 6 Gold in your deck at this point, you really just need to increase your chances of finding it.

Game Reports / No +Buy Megaturn
« on: July 19, 2013, 10:02:39 pm »
This set looks like a great engine set, but is missing any +Buy.  However it is possible to still gain 20+ points on one turn.  It took me a while of looking at this to figure it out.

Stonemason, Doctor, Fishing Village, Menagerie, Coppersmith, Feodum, Ironmonger, Cache, Catacombs, Harvest

Stonemason can be used as a +Buy to trash Catacombs into 3 Feodum and Feodum into 5 Silver

I think the larger size of the Dominion community makes it easier to find some one of your skill level, which makes the game a lot less intimidating.  Also in dominion, its pretty easy to describe a simple strategy, like BM, HP/X, Workshop/Gardens.  In innovation every game is more complicated.

I would say that Dominion is easier to to learn than Innovation, but harder to master.  I also made it up to level 25 much faster at Innovation than Dominion.

Innovation General Discussion / Re: Memorizing the cards
« on: July 16, 2013, 07:56:28 pm »
Its not too hard to figure out how the cards work, but I really struggle with what strategy to use, without know what cards are best worst for me in a current situation.  In base I usually know the answer, and it has improved my play quite a bit, in echos I'm not real sure.  It takes a long time to get a feel for that, but i guess thats just the process of learning the game.  Its just frustrating to feel so bad at the game again.

86
I've played about 300 games of inno, and really like it, but the learning curve does feel a lot higher than dominion.  Even to play 1 game at a high level say 25 or higher, you really need to know all the cards, and 105 cards is a ton to learn. For dominion, you really only need to think about 10 cards at a time (edge case Black Market).

For me right now its really frustrating to play Echos since I don't know all the cards, and don't understand them very well.  I've played maybe 10 games of echos and it just feels like a totally different game.  I'm not sure how to start getting used to it.  I guess i just need to jump in, but i'm not real excited to.

Also I would love to see this get more popular, but I'm not sure why it hasn't.

+1 to Titandrake, you do a better job of explaining what I was thinking than I do.  I had forgotten about that OE hit turn 3, that is incredibly bad luck.  Ruins Shelters are a bit of a deterrent against Swindler, but I don't think they are a hard counter by any means.

Edit: Switched Ruins to Shelters

Embargoing Silver was probably a bad move though.

I'm curious why Embargoing Silver is a bad move.  My opponent has no silvers at that point and the only Silver kingdom card is Swindler which is terminal.  This has a pretty good chance of slowing down his economy; its fairly hard to get to Gold with only a couple terminal Silvers in his deck.  He can gain silver via Squire, but that's probably pretty slow.  It should even slow down his ability to get to 5 a little, which is really what he wants for Upgrade or Rebuild.

I probably should have tried to get some economy, but if swindler was not there, I think I'd be in pretty good shape with 3 rebuilds in my deck and a lot of cycling. I think DG is right, relying on a few key cards against Swindler is pretty risky, and I got unlucky. Swindler is just really high variance card, if he hit only my Coppers, I would probably have won as bad as I lost, with the same strategy.

Getting all of your Rebuilds hit is super bad luck, I'd have ragequit!

I would have probably left at this point if I wasn't playing a friends of mine, it was pretty frustrating to get killed that badly.  It's a lot easier to take that kinda lucky when you know the person getting lucky.

Game Reports / Destroyed By Swindler
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:42:44 am »
This is about as bad as I've ever lost a game! I'm playing against one of my an IRL buddy that moved away while we face time. We got some pretty good laughs out of this game! I get 5/2 vs. his 4/3 and go for Rebuild/Embargo and he goes for Swindler/Swindler.  I figure with a Rebuild opening I can plow through points real fast, Swindling my Coppers doesn't really hurt, however Outpost is a pretty nasty target for my 5s.

I Embargo Silver on T3 since I don't need any economy, and I figure that will slow him some.  I am able to get 3 Rebuilds while his deck is just colliding swindlers.  I figure its over at this point, and i should be able to win pretty quickly.  I continue to make a Rebuild vs. BM type deck; I get a few estates and cellars so i can play my Rebuilds more often.

While I'm building this common deck archetype he Swindles all Rebuilds into Outpost on Turn 4/6/9. Suddenly I'm left with a deck with NO economy built to play a key card it neither has nor can afford. Obviously things didn't go very well from here.

I think I got pretty unlucky here, but Swindler is not bad against Rebuild, especially with a really bad 5.  Also I think Market Square would crush Swindler/Swindler on a  4/3, but I thought Rebuild would be fast enough, but it wasn't.

Cellar, Embargo, Herbalist, Squire, Market Square, Swindler, Market, Outpost, Rebuild, Upgrade

Game Reports / Re: My first golden deck
« on: July 16, 2013, 01:47:58 am »
That set is really crazy.  I'm not quite sure what I'd go for there.  I think i need a Witch ASAP, and then 2 Junk dealers to start clearing things out, and probably just react to what the opponent is doing from there.  I'm not sure it would be a golden deck, but that is a pretty cool way to transition out of that game.

Also, welcome to the forums!

Game Reports / Trade Route/Trade Route Open
« on: July 16, 2013, 01:37:41 am »
There are almost no situations that you would ever want to open TR/TR.  It kills your economy at the price of very lousy trashing.  However this game had just the right set up to make it the best opening. At first look I didn't notice Colonies, and thought GM was ignorable, and that some BM would win; likely with a sprinkling of Lighthouse/Swindler/Fishing Village mostly to react to what your opponent does.

However Colonies change everything! A Colony game gives you so many more points that you have enough time to get to Grand Markets. Swindler would be a big threat without Lighthouse, but with lighthouse, I can just trash down to a trim deck that has 2 Lighthouses. His early Swindler only hurts if it hits one of my TRs, since I want to trash all my starting cards.  It takes me quite a while to build back any economy, but once I do I am able to win the GM split 7/3 and its just about over at that point.

Goko Dominion Online / Browser Refresh In Game
« on: July 14, 2013, 04:27:58 am »
I've never had this problem before today. Today, while I was playing on goko, my browser was refreshing in the middle of a game.  It seems like it doesn't usually happen until i get close to the end of the game.  It happened maybe 7 times today out of 30 games.  Has anyone else seen this.  Any guesses whether its a Goko bug, internet connection issue, or browser problem?  :(

Game Reports / Ill-Gotten Gains & Grand Market

Typically these cards are never in the same deck, so much that an April fools combo was written about them. However in a tight Remake/Fortress deck, I was able to curse my opponent by remaking Fortress to IGG and then remake those to Grand Markets.

Game Reports / Clunky Engine vs. Duchy/Duke
« on: July 13, 2013, 06:15:01 pm »
This set has a lot of different strategies available.  Bureaucrat into Duchy/Duke is strong in a slog.  Chapel, KC, Outpost and Vineyards are usually good for an engine.  The engine here is pretty clunky though, with only Nobles for cards, and Forager for +Buy.  I think with so many points out there, you have to go for the engine.  Whatever your opponent goes for there is all time time in the world to build with so many points on the board.

After choosing the engine, i was really unsure as how to open.  I didn't want to trash down to quickly with Chapel since the only +Buy required trashing and all of the good engine parts were very expensive, at 6 and 7.  Finally i opened Plaza/Forager so i could save my coins for Nobles while still building up villages.  I'm pretty sure there are a lot of different routes to the engine here; Chapel/Plaza, Chapel/Bureaucrat, Silver/Plaza all seem interesting.  KC/Bureaucrat allows you to gain fuel for the foragers, so you can continue to expand your deck; it also brings any slog deck to a crashing halt.

My opponent went for a hybrid Duchy/Duke that seemed slower than just Bcrat into it, so i was able to get ahead, and 3 pile pretty early.  I think in the mirror Vineyards would be critical as well as trying to have enough buys to 3 pile.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ranking the Expansions
« on: July 10, 2013, 11:38:45 am »
Call it a cop-out if you want, but my rankings would be as follows:

Base = Intrigue = Seaside = Alchemy = Prosperity = Cornucopia = Hinterlands = Dark Ages = Guilds = Promos

I think it would be a serious blow to the game if any of these sets were removed. I love them all.

To be fair, it probably wouldn't be a serious blow if the promos were removed. I like them a lot but would any of us really be saying "Hmmmm, something is missing" if we didn't have them?
Gotta agree with him. I don't have any on Goko, and I don't feel any loss (though that may be because I don't own them or play on iso enough to see them much.

Funny, I feel the opposite.  I really miss the promos.  I loved Black Market, and those couple Chancellor Stash games that I've played.

I bet it's an artifact of when it used to be an on-gain effect instead of on-buy.

I remember back when goko had it as on gain. Farmland/Fortress pile drive was pretty hilarious.

This is the fastest game I've ever played.  Starting with a Metalworking Monument, and about that good of luck from then on.  Hard to believe you can win in 6 turns though.

I believe you on the second one only.

Really?  I like the third one the most. :P

I actually got something pretty close to this recently.  I had Journeyman, EECS and hadn't greened yet calling Copper allowed me to sift for Silver and Gold giving me a Province.

To expand on what HB said, drawing cards without castles means you are getting more leafs, crowns.  This gives you a better board, since those icons are better in the transition to the midgame (ages 3-6).  The early scoring can be great, but you also have to make the most of the cards that you draw, knowing that it will push you towards crown or leaf dominance.  I feel like its not the best card, but I will use it pretty often if i don't have to share.  Also, never share, they will always get Monument if you share (maybe it only feels that way :) ).

Have you looked at how Journeyman does yet?  It felt pretty strong the 1 time i played it BM.  I mostly called Estate and Province, but occasionally copper.  Deck tracking can increase the effectiveness of this quite a bit.  It quite strong for BM maybe similar to Embassy .
