Dominion General Discussion / Re: Use Coin Tokens or spoils?
« on: June 19, 2013, 02:36:02 pm »
I like the idea of using the Spoils instead of coin tokens.  The flexibility of the tokens makes them very valuable.

I would probably use the coin tokens for 1 coin and keep the spoils, assuming that you had enough time left to see the Spoils in the next reshuffle.  Your next shuffle will be better average money density assuming the cards in your deck are worth less than 2$ (which is usually true).  I'm not sure that giving up the flexibly of the token is worth improving the average money density next shuffle, but its my first guess.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Possession...
« on: June 19, 2013, 02:28:15 pm »
There is something fun about buying possession and then destroying your deck so your opponent can't do anything when he possesses you. This is fun if you get to use a good deck to buy tons of VPs.  However in the mirror, its terrible, and you both end up with the worst deck you can make, and just struggle to 3 pile with the game being decided by 1 lucky hand.

Wow, it's really not a good sign we need to talk about which of the different disappearing action bugs I'm posting about. Thanks goko.

Goko Dominion Online / Disappearing Actions Bug
« on: June 17, 2013, 12:30:37 am »
I played a game with vineyards, and at the end of the game 6 action cards were gone from my deck.  I only noticed because i had point counter on, and i had 50 points on there, and when the game ended i had 40 instead.  Fortunately it didn't affect the outcome.   Between my last turn and the end state of the game my deck lost 6 action cards 3 Gold and a Potion.  Has anyone seen something like this before?  Any guesses at what the bug is that would cause this?  Also should i report this to goko somehow?

I feel for ashersky, I've seen that kind of king making in 3 player dominion quite a bit.  It takes a lot of the fun out of the game for me and is the reason I don't ever play 3 player games.  I do play quite a bit IRL with friends and typically the goal is too keep me from winning.  I understand that you don't want to ruin the game for the other players, but I'd have a hard time staying after seeing something like that.

Game Reports / Sea Hag/Urchin
« on: June 11, 2013, 03:28:38 am »
This was a really interesting kingdom, despite being really frustrating for both of us.  I think Sea Hag/Urchin is the obvious opening, and both of go for it, with the goal being to get a Mercenary, as quickly as possible, and then start picking up Market Squares to discard for gold while cleaning your deck.

We both go for the same strategy, but he collides his on turn 3, and I can't trash an Urchin until turn 10.  (It felt a lot like missing a treasure maps and i thought about leaving in frustration)  Fortunately when i do collide on turn 10 I am able to trash all 3 Urchins on the same turn.  I loose the Curse split 7/3 since he got a second Sea Hag, and started trashing earlier.

At this point I figure my trashing is faster, and the Militia in Mercenary will slow him down, so I though I had an outside chance.  My opponent builds his deck getting Forge and some engine parts while I mostly just trash and buy Market Squares.  In the end my deck ends up a little more clean than his, and I am able to pull together a lucky turn with most of my deck which allows me to 3 pile (likely because he didn't protect against 3 pile quite enough instead of building his engine).

This was a really weird game, where both of our decks were pretty ugly till the end.  I think I was pretty lucky to be able to pull out a win here.  I do think that you would want at least 2 Urchins in this setup, since the Mercenary trashing was so helpful.  Finally Its good to be playing again, I took a long break after Iso went down, and am really just getting started playing on goko. Goko is starting to build the same kind of comradery and sense of community that existed on Iso.

Crossroads, Market Square, Scheme, Urchin, Sea Hag, Wandering Minstrel, Catacombs, Festival, Graverobber, Forge

Dominion Articles / Re: Pillage
« on: June 05, 2013, 03:41:36 pm »
I think Pillage is good in the same situations most attacks are good: engines where you can play the attack a lot.

As HME says, it is good when you can play it a lot.  I think Pillage is strongest if you are playing an engine vs. BM.  It can really allow you to buy time in the case of an engine that is either fairly week, or slow to set up.  Once you are playing Pillage every turn, it makes it really hard for a BM deck to get anywhere.

I see what you're saying. Maybe I don't use Pillage optimally then. Still, playing it every turn means spending $5 every time you use Pillage, and that's costly.

It is expensive to buy it every turn, but in an engine deck that cost is well worth it for the attack.  Assuming you are drawing your deck every turn, the cost isn't as high as you would think since the spoils you get from it allow you to buy one next turn.  It costs 1 Action, the draw of 3 cards (Pillage and 2 Spoils), and supplies +1 Coin (2*3 Spoils -5 Coins to buy the next Pillage).

This makes sense, Fortune Teller is typically good in a slog, especially with no other good terminals.  Library and Council Room would be better for BM but they compete with IGG.  Fortune Teller also speeds up how quickly the Curses get shuffled into the opponent's deck.

Innovation Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent I'm Sorry

Your opponent's worst move is not to meld mathematics at turn 2.

I agree.  That is what i was trying to say when I said his mistake was playing Metalworking twice, but I didn't actually say or convey that in any way. Words are hard.

Innovation Game Reports / Dear My Opponent I'm Sorry
« on: April 29, 2013, 11:12:03 pm »
This game made me think innovation could use a thread like this, similar to the dominion one.  Sometimes the cards just aren't good for you.  Try and post games where you got so lucky you feel guilty about it, not games where you are "sorry" your opponent played badly.

So, I felt a little dirty after this game. I won in 8 turns, which is pretty ridiculous. I opened Clothing into another color he didn't have giving me a strong start with 2 1s scored. That's ok, he has Domestication into Metalworking, that can score fast, while giving him new cards to block my clothing.  It didn't turn out that way, his Metalworking scores nothing, and draws a card he already has. On my first draw, I drew the 1 color that wasn't on the board already, and use clothing to meld it and score 3 1s, not bad for turn 2.
He uses Metal working again, twice, instead of blocking my Clothing, but that's an easy mistake to make when you are new, and the only mistake i saw all game.  I play Clothing twice empty to get Monument, and its really all over from there.  It did happen that the 3 i draw so i can achieve is Translation on a board with only crowns, so I take World too.  That was some crazy good luck!

The fact that you can mouse over the cards and have them pop up is so nice! When i first started reading the articles on the forum, i always paged between the card list and article. That is much easier.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Was this really necessary?

My first reaction when I saw this was anger! I know that I have wanted 1 main lobby for a long time (maybe a few other to meet friends or something eg secret chamber).  One of the biggest complaints going around is the difficulty in obtaining matches.  This is problem due to the lack of auto match, and the limit of 50 people per lobby.  It seems to me that this can only make this worse.  More than that I guess I'm angry that they had time to do this (seriously WHY?) instead of setting up some sort big lobby where you can actually find matches.

Also, can we please hid games that are playing going as a default!

If only I had found this last night before my first game!  It would have been so helpful.

Played my first game tonight.  It felt so good be back on isotropic; just the interface alone made me smile.  Thanks to JohnNi for being very patient and answering questions.  This feels like something i could enjoy.  Now I just have to figure out some strategy.  In case anyone wants a good laugh, I'm pretty sure my play is terrible.

Anything with Scrying Pool or Vineyards.

Counting House, Warehouse, Worker's Village, Colony.

Building an Engine when it doesn't look like it should work, and being behind the whole game till the last turn.

Opening Loan/Potion on a board where the only Potion card is Transmute, and winning.

Do you have the log for this Transmute/Loan board?  That sounds pretty fun.

Game Reports / Re: Chess

I never thought I would say this, but I would open with Outpost in this set.  Opening Outpost is usually terrible; this is typically because it will generate a lot of hands with just 2 or 3 $, at the cost of a little buying power in your main turn.  Here the Outpost turn will allow you to pick up a bunch of Pawns faster than typical, or a Peddler.  The duration cards allow like Caravan/Outpost lower Peddler cost on both turns, which is quite useful.  An Outpost opening enables you to get Peddlers faster than any other card on this set (Caravan may be close).

I picture this game as being a rush for the Peddlers.  After that a Bishop will be quite helpful to get a lot of points of Bishop/Peddler.  An early Bishop gives you and your opponent early trashing, so its only benefit is the VPs you get from it.  In this game those early VPs will not be important.  I think an opponent getting an early Bishop just ensures that you win the Peddler race big.

I could be wrong, opening Outpost does make me cringe.

I think mid level trashing pushes you more in the direction of Marauder.  I would call mid level trashing something like Upgrade, Forager, Bishop.  If that is present, you will likely trash most the Cruses/Ruins, so the -1 VP doesn't mater.

I'm not quite sure about this, but I kinda like Woodcutter/Potion opening into Pstones right away, and as much copper as you can find to help sustain your economy in a long game like this.  I would say this is pretty weak, but this is a real weak board.

I think I'll give goko another chance.  About once a month I'd check out goko and see if it i was something i wanted top play on (mostly for DA cards) the lack of stability back then was enough to drive me away.  The other thing i miss most is the lack of competition, and sense of community on goko.

I'm curious to see many of the high level players switch over to goko. So far it has been really hard to find players ranked higher than the bots on goko.  I would enjoy playing some games on goko with you Sad Panda.  I sure will miss isotropic.
