The problem with the study was that he had effectively 4 Tablets, and 1 gear. Adding a second gear wasn't going to be worthwhile unless he could get TWO compasses, which was unlikely. Otherwise it was only going to be worth 3 VP. So building a Guild that turn made more sense.

Now, you could argue that the Study might've been more correct as a defensive "don't let X get" type play... but we've been more or less focused on just building us up as best we can rather than worrying about others.

Hmm, looking back at my old QT posts, that wasn't quite it.  I wrote:

"I am not sure what mith will do with my hand. Study, probably. It's only 3VP, but it makes future green potentially much better."

Then I talk about another card you might take (which I won't reveal here) but which would be a gamble for mith, and then I added, "Shadows would be a better gamble because there are lots of good Black cards, I get a bonus for building them and Galz can build one for free."

So it wasn't entirely unexpected.

But I think I preferred Study because it seemed like a better gamble to me.  When that guild was built, it was also worth just 3VP.  So Study and GoS were both worth the same.  The gamble was, are you more likely to get more VP in the future from Black cards being built, or from getting some greens?  I would have favoured the greens, with these considerations:

- great if you can get a second Compass
- makes the other Gear a little better
- Watno was unlikely to build more greens, so mith was in a great position for Science

You may not have been sure about that last point.  Our plan from the start was to just get Watno a single set of Science cards for Justinian.  Our most recent hands have not given us better alternatives though.

Edit:

Another point is that there are more compasses and gears in Age III, so it's not that unlikely for you to get two.

BUT, I don't know what your starting hand was, so that could also have influenced your decisions.  And anyway, as it turns out, GoS is looking like it may be better in the end anyway since Watno has taken more science after all.

It probably is, but I haven't looked closely at the point breakdown.

Just out of... say, curiosity, a complete science set (the first anyway), is worth an additional 7 points, yes?
