I'm sorry to report that shraeye had a number of scheduling conflicts and techincal difficulties and were unable to complete our match. We managed to get two and a half rounds last night going 1-1, but then my connection died during the third game and I couldn't log back into goko. We're going to have to call it a tie. Here's the games we managed to finish.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130519/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1369020143192.txt
Ironmonger shines with both nobles and harem on the board.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130519/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1369020767104.txt
A board with a lot of power cards. I focus on goons and try to strategically upgrade silvers into silk roads but it's not enough against a governor stack.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130519/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1369021660582.txt
The interrupted game. Shraeye goes for deck thinning while I try Count/Gardens. I have a lead when my connection dies but he was starting to pick up Provinces so who's to say.

Thanks for what games we did manage Shraeye, sorry this was such a mess and kind of an anticlimactic way to end the tournament. Good luck in future gokodoms!

Joseph2302 beats A Drowned Kernel 3-0

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130509/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1368111861547.txt
Joe goes for bishop/treasure map which is more sensible than my baron/p. stone.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130509/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1368112665842.txt
Bandit Camp based engines. I totally forget how hermit and madman work, playing procession on them.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130509/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1368113489134.txtS
Familiar and Scrying Pool. Joe picks up multiple potions, which lets him overtake me pretty quickly. I waste my time with hunting grounds.

Thanks for the games, Joseph2302, and well played. I was playing very abysmally today, but I hope you had fun.

I think there may be an error in the spreadsheet; the person listed as my opponent has someone else listed as their opponent, and there's someone else that has me listed as their's. In fact it looks like there's a loop that goes me -> Joseph2302 -> MrHaas -> zaubererer -> me.

Stash for just being boring.

Game 3

Forager, Hermit, Spice Merchant, Wandering Minstrel, Ghost Ship, Horn of Plenty, Rebuild, Rogue, Stables, Possession
I mess up the opening on this HoP mega turn board.
A Drowned Kernel Forager / Spice meachant is better than my hermit / spice merchant.
Nearly steal the win with Possession but it is not to be.

My plan was to trash all my HoP's the turn after you bought the Possession but I panicked and pulled the trigger too early. I also think I need to break the habit of automatically going for cursers, especially seeing how much I got trounced in that last game. I remember from Iso what a formidable player you are so I'm glad I was able to hold my own in at least a couple of these games. :)

A Drowned Kernel beats 17and3buys 3-1

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130427/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1367109747878.txt
Competing Grand Market based engines, with 17and3buys going for more money and highways than me. Procession/fortress works well for me, but I'm almost screwed over when my stables fail to collide with any money on turn 17. I get a megaturn in the nick of time.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130427/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1367110127771.txt
BM-ish game. 17and3buys has the lead for a long time but I manage to pull ahead on the last turn by expanding a hunting grounds into a province and a duchy.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130427/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1367110583879.txt
Rebuild race. 17and3buys goes for apothecary for support while I try ironworks. He wins handily.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130427/log.51102f16e4b0fb53a9f92227.1367111012805.txt
Another rebuild game, this time with shelters. 17and3buys goes for apothecaries and jesters, forgoing rebuild. I buy some bureaucrats. Rebuild seems to work better when you don't have to worry about estates.

Thanks for the games, it was pretty tense. All four games were very close, and I feel like this match could have easily gone either way.

Dominion General Discussion / Looters vs. Torturer
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:04:55 pm »
Getting pinned by Torturer is one of the most painful experiences in Dominion, and one way to counter it is with another good curser. A Witch or Sea Hag will more reliably put curses in your opponent's deck than a Torturer, and the fact that they will get curses in their deck quicker means that the Torturer chains will be harder to pull off. As long as they don't get a multi-Torturer turn off too quickly, you'll quite likely win the curse split.

An interesting question is how this equation changes with Cultist and Marauder. One the one hand, these cards give you better benefits relative to their cost than other cursers, and multiple Cultists can flood an opponents deck with ruins very quickly. In most cases, ruins do as good a job as curses at clogging an engine, so Cultist in particular might actually be better than a conventional curses at stopping a Torturer chain in its tracks. However, you have to deal with the fact that you're not draining the curse pile- if you give your opponent all the ruins and they give you all the curses, unless you've gotten a substantial lead in the process then you've gotten the worse end of the deal. So how often can the two attacking looters give out ruins fast enough to block Torturer (assuming that the board is otherwise good for Torturer- if there's no way to play multi-Torturer turns then the looters are just going to own them).

In this game my opponent focuses heavily on Torturers, while I only buy a couple (but I still buy them), and also pick up some Cultists. By the time he resigned, the ruins pile was empty and only half the curses had been taken (most of them by him). A key issue here, though, was that the only village on this board was Shanty Town, one of the few cards that is hurt more by ruins than by curses.

Probably hamlet. FV is more powerful but there's so many fun things you can do with hamlet, and it's so easy to get a bunch of the little buggers.

I also kind of like Ruined Village for being the nastiest ruin to give opponents :P

$11 is unreachable for Graverobber

Except for peddler. Could a graverobber/peddler strategy work in a colony game? I think one problem is you can't get them back from the trash.

Contraband I grant is illogical. But Cache I've seen happen more than once in slogg-y games. Also, multiplayer helps piles run a LOT.

However, things like silver and most of all potion - yes, potion - are the whadjumahuhs.

I've seen Silver empty way more times than anything in the Coppersmith power range.  Trader anyone?

I'm not sure games in adventure mode "count" because the bots behave pretty strangely but I saw silver run out in a sloggy 4-player with squire. I may have been behaving strangely that game as well though.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Best target for Procession?
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:41:18 pm »
Any $5 when Border Village is available.  It's just so, so wrong.

I think that this raises the point that, aside from obvious answers like Fortress and "cards that trash themselves anyways", the power of procession depends on what cards are available to gain as much as the cards you can play it on. A good $6 action (especially BV) makes playing procession on a $5 much more appealing, and even procession/fortress isn't so hot when the only $5 action is counting house. So maybe the real question is what pairs or chains of actions work well with procession?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Best target for Procession?

Armory is actually pretty decent too. You can gain two cheap engine components on top of your deck, and a key $5 in your discard. And if you're sad about losing the Armory, you can get one right back. Actually you can even just topdeck Procession/Armory and repeat the combo all you want.

This may even be one of the reasons why you must upgrade into another Action, since this would be a pretty fast way to 3-pile if you could take Duchies.

Also so you can't turn $5 cost actions into golds.

Is there any way to retrieve goko logs? I have the last three games of the match saved but would like to find the first one.

6367
Hmm. I just tested with Market Square and Rats; it didn't give me the choice of whether to discard market square first to gain a gold or to draw a card first.

I guess it's just Market Square then, since it a reaction and doesn't fit in to the same interface.

Should it be giving you the choice there? I thought that Market Square being a reaction meant it had to happen first, but I'm not sure.

6368
If I remember right, currently on Goko, they correctly do that ordering, but they don't let you pick the order of on-trash effects, they just pick an order for you. It only matters when you have multiple on-trash effects AND their default order isn't the one you want, so it's pretty rare for it to matter, but sometimes it does. (I think the edge case I can think of is with one on-trash effect which gains you cards and one which draws you cards, where you might want to do it in one order or the other depending on the details of the reshuffle manipulation.)

I recall being asked what order I wanted to activate on-trash abilities in, maybe they fixed it. It even asked for me to pick when the two cards being trashed were the same cards (two hunting grounds).

Brilliant. Currently banging my head against the wall on level 19. I can get a solution but I'm trying for the third star. Best I can do is 12 tiles and I'm stumped on how to reduce that number.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Market Square triggered by Pillage
« on: April 06, 2013, 09:28:28 pm »
That is true, but I think that there's one glitch here, not two. Market Square shouldn't react to Pillage, but the fact that it is blocks Pillage as a side effect.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Market Square triggered by Pillage
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:40:36 am »
I did have a moment of confusion with Pillage being blocked by non-moat reactions but remember that pillage only targets players with five or more cards in hand and certain reactions (beggar and market square for example) are discarded as part of their reaction; since the reaction happens first, the other player now has four cards in hand and is unaffected pillage.

6373
I've often wondered if Governor could be tweaked to be a little less game-warpingly powerful by giving the other players the option of which benefit they want. In a lot of Governor games giving your opponent a silver almost seems like an attack. This would slow play down quite a bit, though. And I guess it would ruin the whole Puerto Rico homage thing. Maybe just make picking the silver up optional?

6374
I want to see more sites/companies make real big announcements/releases on April 1st. I remember one year there was a long-anticipated Dwarf Fortress update that came out on April 1st and it was made all the more memorable because so many people thought it was a joke at first.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Bizarre bot strategies?
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:54:14 pm »
During a base set adventure I saw a bot chapel its deck down until its only treasures were a silver and a gold. Then it spent ten turns piledriving the laboratories, one by one.

Then it bought a remodel.

Then it remodeled its gold into a Province.

Then it remodeled its silver into a Duchy.

By the time I finally managed to empty the Province pile (I hadn't built my deck assuming I would have to buy almost all of them, silly me) it was buying a copper and remodeling a copper into an estate every turn.

The thing is that the adventures are supposed to teach new players about the game, so I don't know if this sort of thing is a bug or a feature.
