So I guess I am one of you now :>
« on: June 01, 2013, 07:51:43 am »

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I finally decided that I want to put Dominion videos on my youtube-channel too.
I started doing some Mincraft and Antichamber Let's Plays on youtube a few months ago. In the beginning the main reason was to improve my terrible spoken english, but now I mainly do it because it is fun. I do not have a huge channel (42 subscribers at the time of this writing), but anyways, I decided to do two different playlists for my dominion games. One for the viewers who do not know Dominion or do not know Dominion too well, where I explain the basic rules of the game, the main strategies, "advanced" strategies, the cards and when or how to use them and so on. And then another one for the viewers who already know Dominion and just want to see some interesting games, like you guys. :>

I am not a superb hyper top-tier Dominion player, but I am decent I guess. At the moment I am somewhere at 6100 points and around place 30 on the pro leaderboard. So most likely many viewers can learn from my video (but I can also learn from you comments of course. :)).
Besides that I am not a terribly good caster, but the best way to improve is to keep doing it.
Hopefully it will be at around one Dominion video per day in the end, but I can not promise that. While the cutting, rendering and uploading of these is very fast (compared to other games), I can only upload and record during the weekends at the moment.

So here are the two playlists:

Just games:
(only pro mode, 5k+)

Games with tutorials:
(mainly casual mode in the beginning for convenience reasons)

Anyways, thanks for watching and have fun doing so. :)

It's actually faint praise, I am basically blown away by everybody's cool accent, being from the state of Michigan myself.

Saying you have a particular Michigan accent by yourself or lack any? I'm not too familiar with US prejudices on who's got weird accents within the US (except for Texas or more generally the Southern accent - at least from a German (/European?) point of view).

I'm sure every person says this, but my accent is literally no accent at all. It's just boring, plain old English.

I'm sure many Britons would disagree with you.

Midwest is considered pretty close to the most 'neutral' accent in the United States.
I should probably also point out that Michigan is roughly in the area of the U.S. that is considered the midwest, though hey, that's a term that doesn't make lots of sense. Robz888, do you consider yourself to be from the midwest?

I do promote discussions of accents. They are fascinating.

I do consider myself from the Midwest, a geographical designation that makes absolutely no sense. And it's always seemed like the midwest accent is the most boring, normal proto-typical American version of English, but of course, every person thinks his own accent sounds normal. But man, I really think that's how it is in Michigan.

If anything, our "a" sounds are even more nasally than the rest of America.

Being a Michigander for my whole life, people always tell me that I have a huge accent.  I never really notice it myself, but sometimes people will call me out by asking me to say things like "bagel", "about" or "milk" because they find it amusing the way I say them.

Yeah, but we just say it the normal way, right? "BAY gull." "uh BOUT." and... "milk." How else can you say milk?

"BAY gull" is not the normal way.  There is a HIMYM bit about this. :P

"Bagel" rhymes with "haggle".  And I believe the typical pronunciation of "about" is "ah bout".

Pronouncing bagel like haggle would be absurd. Do they do that, somewhere?

(This also seems like a good place for a Hinterlands flavor graf joke.)

This makes me think - I have a fair amount of videos out there - does it sound like I have an accent to anyone?  If so, what kind?

This is specific to US residents, but you can try http://www.youthink.com/quiz.cfm?action=go_detail&sub_action=take&obj_id=9827

I remember taking a test similar to this, and it correctly guessed where I was from, which is California. So hey, give it a shot.

Oh my wow.  I never realized I say the vowels in "price" and "prize" differently.

I'm not American.  I got "Neutral".

Quote
Neutral

You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.

Oh, that's incredible, it nailed me exactly.

Which American accent do you have?

My Results:

Northern You have a Northern accent.  That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

I always get Neutral on these things.  Go figure, I was raised by two very southern families.  Never had an accent.

I like how quickly this got derailed into a discussion on accents. That's what, one post on the OP's actual content?
