Monty Python and the Holy Grail Board
« on: March 28, 2013, 05:38:43 pm »
+42

Inspired by the Christmas and Easter themed boards, I decided to make a themed board.

Kingdom:

Scheme "Lancelot, Galahad, and I wait until nightfall, and then leap out of the rabbit, taking the French by surprise"
Hermit "There are some who call me... Tim?"
Bridge "Stop. Who would cross the Bridge of Death must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see."
Death Cart "Bring out yer dead."
Feodum "We're living in a dictatorship. A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes..."
Young Witch "I'm not a witch, I'm not a witch!"
Bane: Village "Burn her!"
Wandering Minstrel "Brave Sir Robin ran away, bravely ran away away."
Knights "I seek the bravest and the finest knights in the land who will join me in my court at Camelot."
Harem "We are but eight score young blondes and brunettes, all between 16 and 19-and-a-half."
Peddler "Yes, shrubberies are my trade. I am a shrubber... I arrange, design, and sell shrubberies."

I considered including Council Room, but on second thought, let's not go there.  It is a silly place.

Three shalt be the number of posts thou shall +1, and the number of the +1s shall be three. Four shalt thou not +1, neither +1 thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out.

I think there's potential for a Madman/Bridge megaturn, especially with Hermits trashing Curses and gaining Hermits/Villages/Bridges(after one Bridge is played).

I suppose. Open maybe Hermit/YW? Or maybe Bridge?

I would just ignore Young Witch and open either Hermit/Bridge or Hermit/Hermit.  Gain lots of Hermits, Bridges, Villages, maybe some Wandering Minstrels and Schemes.  Maybe spend some spare buys on Peddlers if Bridges aren't free yet.  And grab as many Madmen as you can.

Not sure if this is you:

http://boardgamegeek.com/image/899053/halfstache?

Anyway, I had an alternate idea for Bring Out Your Dead which works kind of like it does in the movie:

Bring Out Your Dead!/He's Not Dead Yet!/He's Getting Better!

A single supply pile consists of 5 each of the three cards above, shuffled together into a single supply pile. All of them are action cards.

Bring Out Your Dead!
Cost: 2
+1 card
+1 action
Each player may trash a card from his or her hand

He's Not Dead Yet!
Cost: 3
+1 card
+1 action
Move a card of your choice from the trash pile to the Not Dead Yet pile.

He's Getting Better!
Cost: 5
+1 card
+1 action
Gain a card of your choice from the Not Dead Yet pile, putting it into your hand.

Neat, but the problem is, unlike Rogue and Graverobber, this doesn't offer a way to get good cards into the trash.

Oh, here's another:

Watery Tart
Action
Cost: 5
Gain a Sword from the Sword pile, (EDIT:) putting it into your hand.

Sword
(Not in the Kingdom supply)
Treasure
Cost: 0* (can't be bought or gained other than from Watery Tart)
+2 money
When you play this, you may gain a Victory card costing at most half of your current money. If you do so, return the Sword to the Sword pile.

EDIT: This one seems hard to balance... Tart cost could cost 6, or the Sword could just grant +1 coin. In the other direction, the Tart could have +1 action in combination with one of the other tweaks. Having to use the Sword's unique ability immediately prevents you from gaining 5 Duchies just from playing 5 in one turn, in any case. I'm a bit afraid that it would be way too weak if the Sword only gave +1 coin, so maybe Tart should just cost 6? idk, it looks like a very nuanced card to play well.

EDIT: It doesn't seem that strong, except in a mega-turn... For now, I'm having it cost 5 and put the Sword in hand.

At the very least, there is the possibility of filling the trash/Not Dead Yet pile with coppers and spamming He's Getting Better during a megaturn. I haven't playtested to see whether this works too well. It may rely on other TFB cards to really be a strong card generally, though.

...also, if Rats is allowed to be in the game, then I think this card isn't out of line just because it might need enablers to work well.

(I'm not convinced that I put the costs right on the sequence, either, but that's a tricky one.)

This one's not from Holy Grail, but I had to... Basically a Band of Misfits variant.

Hungarian Phrasebook
Cost: 4
+1 card
Reveal an action card from your hand. Play the revealed card as if it were a copy of a differently-named action card in the supply having at most the same cost as the revealed card. If this is the second time you played Hungarian Phrasebook this turn, gain a Curse, putting it into your hand. If this is the third time you played Hungarian Phrasebook this turn, you may trash a Curse from your hand.

Needs an accountability clause: in games using this, when any player plays an attack card, each other player discards a Sir Robin, or reveals a hand with no Sir Robin.

That's a good point.... Nothing in the rules prohibits to "accidentally" shuffle until Sir Robin is wherever you want him to be... :(
I guess you need to shuffle eyes closed or something.

If I have to close my eyes while shuffling, I don't get the benefit of Stash. I guess you could make me separate the Stashes, shuffle with my eyes closed, and then insert the Stashes where I want; I'd be able to see where in my deck Sir Robin was, of course.

You can count the cards in your deck anytime (which implies you can look at their backs), so even without Stash, you could always see where Sir Robin is. As he is supposed to have a benefit in return for his not-so-braveness and as knowing where he is is not game-warping, i guess that would be okay.

On second thought...

(I might have messed up the wording a little. This was challenging to say succinctly. "Does the same" means that the player makes a choice for the player who played Camelot; the "the choices must be different" clause might be enough to be able to infer past the ambiguity, but meh.)

(Also, I think I didn't mean for the gained Camelot to go into your hand, but I'm not going to fix it, I don't think. It makes the card potentially a LOT wackier this way, anyway... If someone plays three Villages and a Camelot, then the only way to stop a Camelot chain is to do Gain a Camelot --> Cellar your hand to prevent playing Gain A Camelot as the third option. Seriously wacky.)

If the only engine on the board is Procession->Conspirator, I will play it.

More Life of Brian... Might actually be oddly broken in some exotic circumstance I haven't thought of yet. lulz.

(I could reword it to require two actions to play it and make it cost 0 or some other silliness, but I don't know...)

I still think the Spanish Inquisition should be a randomly shuffled pile with 10 different cardinals that all have the same action and reaction effect. Only that the reaction is always triggered by something else your opponents could do, and that even the top Cardinal is invisible - so neither your reaction-triggering opponents nor you expect what you get.
(Edit: Not-that-good example here)

If LastFootnote hadn't forbidden Knights-piles for Dark Ages, that would definately have been my entry.

Ah... but I can put it where I want when I shuffle, then? Stash-tastic.

That's a good point.... Nothing in the rules prohibits to "accidentally" shuffle until Sir Robin is wherever you want him to be... :(
I guess you need to shuffle eyes closed or something.

To avoid the shuffle problems a different backside gives, one way of making him scared would be that he has no effect when played if there was an attack played since your last turn.

The obvious solution with Sir Robin (and thematic, too) would be to always put him on top after shuffling. He's always first, and always first to run away.

Updated a 15-card pile I discussed earlier to make it more enticing to buy and play no matter what's on the board and how it's shuffled.

Bring Out Your Dead!/He's Not Dead Yet!/He's Getting Better!
5 each of the following three cards are shuffled into a single supply pile.

Bring Out Your Dead!
Action
Cost: 4

+1 card
+1 action
Each player may trash a card from their hand. +1 money if no one does so.

He's Not Dead Yet!
Action
Cost: 4

+1 card
+1 action
+1 money if the Trash pile is empty
You may move a card from the Trash pile to the Not Dead Yet pile.

He's Getting Better!
Action
Cost: 4
+1 card
+1 action
+1 money if the Not Dead Yet pile is empty
You may gain a card from the Not Dead Yet pile and put it into your hand.
