I don't see any clear other move... his position is really quite a bit better than ours, and I don't see a move for us that improves it by much...

Well, we got one of his pawns in return.

I still think Ng5 is our best move, so let's skip ahead.

14. Ng5 Rfc8

Now, do we still want to capture? What are our other options?

Yeah, I looked at the position after Nxe4 and it really isn't too bad. So let's do that. We want to capture on e6 for sure - otherwise ng5 is silly.

15. Nxe6 Qc4

Now we've got to save our knight. Nd5 loses the queen, Rd5 loses the exchange, but is interesting. He'll take our queen first so that  we can't take his queen instead, and he gets the c2 pawn. 16... Qxe2 17. Nxe2 Nxd5 18. exd5 Rxc2 and he gets the pawn back, plus the b pawn too.

If we do Ng5, Qxc2 Nxc2 h3 winning the E-pawn, and our C pawn is in danger. Not terrible, but the alternative is better:

16. Qxc5. I believe the only difference from the above is that we get to keep our knight on c3 (where it is much better) and let's Jack Rudd's rook go to c5.

I'm thinking after 18... Nxe4, 19. Nd5 Bd8 20. c3

(oh yeah, should've been Qxc4, not Qxc5)

17. Ng5 sound good? he is threatening h3 trapping our knight.

If 19.eitherxd5 Rxc2
interesting. one thing I was worried about Rxd5 was that you could win the e4 pawn instead of the c2 pawn, but I guess you don't want that.

Yeah, looking at this you seem to be ahead. if I take with the pawn it becomes isolated and on the opposite color of my bishop, so will be very hard to protect. by taking with the rook you have a weakish e6 pawn, but I see a doubling of rooks on the 2nd rank  in the future which won't be good. plus my knight is not so good.

sure! that is the correct position, yes.

So, we actually have a lot of choices here I think.

Rxc2 Rxc2 Rc1 Rxa1 Rc8+ doesn't work any more (it did before with our knight on g5 and the pawn on a7.), however at that time he could just do Rxc1 Bxc1 and Nxe4.

now that b4 is protected he can do Rxd2 Bxd2 Rc2, kicking our bishop back to e3. And actually, I don't think it matters all that much whether we capture now or let him trade the rooks. we can either trade now, then do something, and it's his turn. Or we can do something now, trade, then it's his turn. Most cases, move order doesn't matter I think.

but what move will that be? we have quite a few options. we could play Nf2, eventually going to c4. (if 25... Rc1+ 26. Rd1). We can play Kf1 or Kf2, with the idea of defending our bishop after the rooks trade. We can push a3 or a4. this is tricky though. I'm looking at 25... bxa3 26 Rxa3 d5 27 Rxa5 d4 28 Rxc2 Rxc2 29. Rxe5... which I think works out for us. but I don't think this move does much for us if he doesn't capture.

right now I'm thinking Kf1. thoughts?

I like 24 Rxc2 Rxc2 25 Bb6.

Because unless I'm overlooking something, it wins the a-pawn.

that's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure it works...

after 25. Bb6 let's see what he can do:

25... Rc6 26. Bxa5 d5

if 27. exd5 then Nxd5 and he is threatening Ra6 winning the bishop, but I'm not sure if there isn't something we can do. maybe Rd1? then after knight moves we do Bd8...

even if we don't do exd5 I'm not sure what other options we have.

or he can do:

25... a4 26. bxa4 Rc6 with Ra6 and RxP to come. This might be good for us though.

If he takes the 25 ... Rc6 continuation, and we respond with 28 Rd1, he could reply 28 ... Nc3 forking the rook and our a-pawn.  Then, if 29 Rd2 Ra6 30 Bd8 Bxd8 31 Rxd8+ Kf7, and he's about to get the a-pawn back.  Hmmm.
