Who is winning?
From how I like to play I'd say Jack is, but only slightly. He's got much better Pawn development at this point in the game. But since I'm not on his team...

What do people think of Bd5? It forces the exchange on a square that's less advantageous to Jack, the downside being that he has the option of exchanging Bishop for Bishop or Knight for Bishop.

Bxe6 is an even piece exchange, but it helps Jack take control of the center.

The other options I see are retreating the Bishop (d3, e3). This saves the piece for now, but you're worse positionally. I'm not seeing anything else great.

That said I tend not to see more than a couple moves ahead so I could easily be missing something.

(Oh and here's the text that's easy to paste into PGN viewer as the game stands.)

Code: [Select]
1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 a6
6. Be3 e5
7. Nf3 Be7
8. Bc4 O-O
9. O-O Be6
10. Qe2 b5
11.

Bxe6 is definitely poor, since the point of our position is to hold d5.  With Bd5 we end up with a pawn on d5, also very poor.

Also I think your analysis is a move behind, based on your PGN table Jorbles ;-)

Code: [Select]
1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 a6
6. Be3 e5
7. Nf3 Be7
8. Bc4 O-O
9. O-O Be6
10. Qe2 b5
11. Bb3 Nbd7

My thoughts are Rfd1 or Rad1.  I think between those two I would go with Rfd1, but I always feel like no matter which Rook I choose I always end up choosing the wrong one.

My analysis was a turn behind, woops.

I prefer Rad1, though only because that piece seems undeveloped. The only reason I'd consider Rfd1, is if you foresee a push by yourself along the a-column in the future, and you want to leave the Rook there to assist with that.

Which I guess is as good an argument for Rfd1 as any, so maybe that is better.

Well the ultimate question is do you want a rook on e/f or a/b/c.

We aren't limited to a Rd1 move. What other options should we consider?

Nb6 might be coming, which we do not want to take, but maybe have to?

I mean, Qxb6 is pretty good for black, but Nb6 grabs control of d5.

We'll still have control of d5 because of Rfd1.  We also could lift that rook, and put the queen or other rook behind, if we want more on d5, but I'mfine for now.

Not really...
Code: [Select]
12. Rfd1 Nb6
13. h3 (a non-move to illustrate the point) d5
14. exd5 Nfxd5
15. Nxd5 Nxd5
16. Bxd5 Bxd5
17. Rxd5 Qxd5
This ends with black having the rook in exchange for a knight, but maybe I'm missing something...

Well, I don't know if there are any funky in-betweeners or other more prominent sidesteps other than taking-taking-taking, hadn't looked at them in depth.

But not strictly better, because the spinoff can have a different cost than the expansion.

Let's say I want to casually play chess online, with my main goal being able to get a game quickly.  What's a good place to do so?  I used to play InstantChess but that might be a little too casual for me now -- I can't even see the log of the game any more (without a paid subscription).

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 a6
6. Be3

I used to use the Free Internet Chess Server.  I'm sure it's still around.

Does 14. Ng5 win the e6 pawn? I feel like it does... I don't THINK he can trap our knight after Nxe6...

I can't see a way to trap it either, as it happens.

Assuming you play that, 14...Rfc8. If 15. Nxe6 Qc4.

aha! I think I have figured out tricksy Jack Rudd's plot! after 15...Qc4, 16. Qxc4 Rxc4. Then our e-pawn is under attack. I we try to protect it with, say, f3, then 17... h3 and he has trapped our knight! If we do 17. Ng5 to protect our pawn ad save the knight then still 17...h3 kicking the knight and winning the e-pawn. I see no way around this, and so 14. Ng5 is probably not a good idea.
