My opponent really impressed me here. I opened Witch/Chapel, follow by great turn 3/4 shuffle luck. I thought the game was as good as over by turn 7. And then my opponent managed to put together this insane Menagerie/Fishing Village/Throne Room/Bureaucrat/Salvager/Expand engine. So I still won, but for a few turns towards the end I really thought he was going to beat me.

Could I have done something better with my amazing early game luck to prevent such a great possible comeback?

Build your deck for a little more. You buy your first Province on turn 9, which is probably too early. He doesn't buy his first Province until turn 15. You have loads of time to get a small Province lead and then Salvage/Expand through the rest.
